Ope! From the rural cornfields of DeKalb County, Linze is an Illinois native and true Midwestern gal who can make a mean bonfire and whip up a perfect marshmallow salad. Her favorite destinations in Illinois include Starved Rock State Park, Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, the charming small town of Sycamore, and historic Rosehill Cemetery. When she's not writing or photographing, Linze enjoys gardening, spending time with her husband and pets, cooking, baking, and grilling, and relaxing with trashy TV.
In Illinois, we love our fresh produce and farm-raised proteins, but we also have a sweet tooth. In a small town, there’s no better place to satisfy that sugary calling than by stopping by the local bakery for a homemade doughnut. Or, if you’re in Chicago, it’s your neighborhood doughnut shop where delicious traditions are made. And for more than 50 years, the very best glazed doughnuts in Chicago, Illinois have been hiding in plain sight in the South Side neighborhood of Roseland.
Since 1972, Old Fashioned Donuts, 11248 S. Michigan Ave., has been serving up some of the city's best fried doughnuts and creating legions of fans along the way. Located in a classic Chicago storefront, the small-but-mighty bakery turns out dozens of fresh doughnuts each day.
Inside, customers walk up to the counter to choose from the varieties of the day, which include a number of different flavors, toppings, and fillings. You can take your order to-go, or enjoy it at one of the old-school, family-style tables.
Still hungry? You can also order a hamburger or cheeseburger, Polish sausage, hot dog, pizza puff, and a few other lunchtime favorites.

Doughnuts come in yeast, cake, Devil's Food cake, and Bismarck styles, with special flavors each week. Regular flavors include blueberry, apple cider, pineapple, strawberry, orange, and coconut, and come glazed in chocolate, sugar, or white frosting.
I love a classic sugar-glazed doughnut, and this is definitely on my Chicago foods bucket list.
Each batch comes out warm, soft, and satisfying on the inside with a thin but perfectly sweet and crunchy layer of glaze — the caliber of which just can't be duplicated.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the Doughnut King himself, longtime owner Burritt Bulloch, affectionately known as "Mr. B" or "The Doughnut Man" by those who have visited throughout the years.
The love put into each and every doughnut is evident — even in his 80s, Mr. B still puts hard work and effort into keeping this Chicago mainstay alive and thriving.
With thousands of positive online reviewers raving about these mouthwatering works of art, it’s easy to see why they’re often considered the best glazed doughnuts in Chicago, Illinois.
