Visitor centers dot the country’s highway system, but it’s likely that you don’t think of them too much. They’re often used for bathroom breaks, maybe to pick up a brochure or two, but most visitor centers in Kansas don’t have much of a reputation as a destination all on their own. The spot we’re featuring today just might change your mind, as this is a pretty cool visitor center in Kansas! The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is among the state’s natural wonders, and you can learn all about it at the Tallgrass Prairie Visitor Center.
The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve spans more than 29,000 acres in the Flint Hills. This type of ecosystem was once extremely common, but very little remains, and much of it is protected in the Flint Hills.
The Tallgrass Prairie bison herd helps to promote genetic diversity within Federal bison herds. It's got remarkably little hybridization with domestic cattle, which is unusual.
There are some great exhibits inside if you're interested in learning more about the ecosystem or preserve.
