This 10-mile loop is not for the faint-hearted. Renowned by those in the know for its breathtaking views of the Bay of Fundy, it's equally infamous for testing experienced hikers.

While the elevation gain isn't particularly strenuous, the sinuous path follows rough terrain that may require some clambering. Also, before reaching the bluffs, the boggy soils and serene lakes provide ideal habitat for droves of mosquitos. Remember your insect repellant if you attempt this route in May and June!

For those who persevere, the rewards are unrivaled. The epic meeting of the wind-swept forest, black cliffs, and growling ocean is difficult to capture in words or pictures.

With its dramatic colors, its scent of ocean spray, and its sprawling sheets of waves, it's easy to see why this stretch of Maine is called the Bold Coast.

However overwhelmed your senses may be, remember to spare some appreciation for the trail's more humble touches of beauty. At Fairy Loop, mindful hikers will notice wildflowers and birds. Closer to the waterfront, glittering water collects in small pockets of rock.

And if you time your trek correctly, you may even catch a magnificent sunset as you return to the trailhead.

Zach's is located near the Highland Farm Preserve just outside the historic village of York.

On this picturesque farm surrounded by trees that turn fiery colors in fall, visitors scour the half-mile field of pumpkins for their perfect jack-o-lantern.

From mid-September through Halloween, Zach's maze is open every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In the past, the 17 acres of deviously cut corn have been shorn in various imaginative shapes, ranging from a peace sign to a spider!

After paying an admission fee of $8 per person over three years old, guests may reach the maze via hay ride or stroll there on foot.

What's in a name? No one named "Zach" has ever owned Zach's Farm. Rather, the moniker stems from the owner's surname, Zacharias. Members of the Zacharias family have passed the land down for generations, adding onto it piecemeal, so it now includes over 250 acres of productive land.

The celebratory atmosphere at the farm feels true to Maine: laidback and comfortable. It isn't uncommon to spot a farm dog happily rubbing shoulders with pumpkin patch visitors.

It's worth mentioning that Zach's is also locally renowned for its high-quality produce and beautiful, fresh-cut flowers. Their products' glowing reputation has earned the farm considerable success, and the Zacharias family has endeavored to return this generosity to the community. They are decade-long partners with York County Cooperative Extension's "Harvest for Hunger" program, donating thousands of pounds of fresh produce annually.

Located in the Patten Stream Preserve, you will find the Patten Stream Trail. This is a loop trail that is approximately 1.4 miles. Even better, there is very little elevation gain, making it perfect for some time outdoors with the entire family.

The trail is open year round and fairly easy to follow. However, you will want to watch your step as there are tree roots and rocks that can result in a bit of a bumpy journey.

The Patten Stream Trail is an escape from the world as you walk through forested areas. You’ll feel tucked away from the stresses of daily life as you meander through the thick trees.

Plus, you’ll walk next to the beautiful Patten Stream. I suggest taking a few minutes to just sit along the shore and listen to the flowing water. These moments are good for your mind and body.

Watch your step as you cross the stream …

However, autumn is magical as the fall foliage and stream combine to create breathtaking scenery.

You also never know what wildlife you may spot along your way. Some hikers have reported seeing deer, otters, and various birds on their trek.

Potential certainly exists for two or more winter weather events, like blizzards, to occur - they say it ought to be in January, and perhaps again in March.

But don't let any of this stop you from enjoying the beauty of winter in Maine.

Seriously, if you bundle up properly, the cold is much less of a problem - and has much more potential to be fun! There are lots of things to do in Maine during the winter, of course, so you'll never be bored.

Maine's state parks, coastline, and other wonders are also magical when covered in snow.

You'll find Garlic Fest on the serene shores of stunning Lake George Regional Park. Though organizers direct visitors to the east side for harvest fun, Lake George includes a dense network of beautiful and family-friendly loops.

On the weekend of October 7 and 8, merrymakers may arrive as early as 9:30 in the morning.

There's no getting around the fact that garlic plays the starring role at this community-run gathering.

However, plenty of other artisanal vendors sell their hand-crafted wares at Garlic Fest's market.

Since the town began hosting the Garlic Fest five years ago, the event has gone from strength to strength.

In 2022, 15 hours of music performed by born and bred Mainers created a celebratory ambiance.

The more word spreads about this charming festival, the more attendance grows.

Little River Lighthouse, managed by The Friends of Little River Lighthouse (themselves a chapter of the American Lighthouse Federation), is located just outside Cutler Harbor. With just 500 residents, this quaint community in Downeast Maine is like something from a storybook. Getting there will be the first chapter of your adventure.

Your destination is a blip of an island covered in pine trees and defended by a rocky shore. Arrive at the Cutler public boat ramp and alert volunteers that you're ready for pickup. They'll sweep you away to the 15 picturesque acres you'll be calling home for the duration of your stay.

The Friends of Little River Lighthouse will ensure your safe arrival, and the 12-minute journey makes for a compelling start to your dreamy vacation.

In some ways, Little River Island is as peaceful as can be. The rugged water places a refreshing distance between you and the outside world. Still, while exploring the walking trails that crisscross the property, you'll be privy to the activity of other island residents, like the local community of Atlantic Puffins.

Though Maine erected the original lighthouse in 1847, the current structure dates back to 1888. Lighthouse keepers, or "wickies" as the public sometimes called them, occasionally struggled with the isolating nature of their work.

The lighthouse's interior is equally charming, with homey touches like handmade quilts draped across cozy beds.

Since volunteers opened the lighthouse for overnight stays, it's become a popular destination for travelers desiring something different.

In Maine, we are blessed because we don’t have to wait long to enjoy vibrant fall foliage. In fact, by mid-September, you may already see signs of the leaves changing colors.

Northern parts of the state, particularly in the Lakes and Mountains region, will start to see leaves changing colors much earlier than other areas. By the end of September, the fall foliage in these areas of the Pine Tree State will be near its peak.

By the first week of October, it is time to get outdoors and start enjoying the breathtaking fall foliage. You may want to take a road trip along I-95 to capture fall views or head to Grafton Notch State Park, located on the other side of the state, for the perfect fall day trip.

By October 9, most of the state will have reached peak fall foliage and you will not want to stay indoors. Go on a scenic drive to capture the views during this time of year…

…or even go on a hike. I recommend the South Bubble Mountain and Jordan Pond Loop in Acadia National Park.

By the middle of October, the vibrant colors around the state will be fading and signs of winter will start to appear.
