Michelle has lived in many places, but counts Maine as one of the best. In addition to the smell of ocean water in the air on rainy days in Portland, she loves puppies, photography, funny people, the Maine Red Claws, traveling, fresh tomatoes, Cambodia and filling out forms. What Mainers have known for a long time is finally making its way through the rest of the country. The long-asked question, “Are people in Maine nice?” has finally been answered. Undoubtedly, Maine is the friendliest state in New England! And now we have the research to back up the claim. Vacationland was recently included on a list of the country’s friendliest states, and we’re proud as punch. In fact, from the capital of Maine to Kittery to all the way to Washington County, Maine, we think this state is full of good vibes. Not entirely sure how a state that some people don’t even realize isn’t part of Canada made the list? Here are a few of our guesses.
With sunrises like this, it's clear why Mainers start every day in a good mood. Are people in Maine nice? They're fabulous!
Wake up early and take in the first morning light in the country. That's how you start the day with a friendly skip in your step, and it might be part of the reason we made our way onto this list.
While we jokingly wait all summer for the tourists to go home, we really do welcome them all. There's so much natural beauty in Maine, Portland, Bar Harbor, Brunswick, we want to share it with the world.
There are so many opportunities to get outside and enjoy the sounds of nature here in Maine that it's almost impossible that we'd be grumpy. Rigorous exercise and fresh air keep Mainers happy as a clam. See what we did there? Seafood is also a highlight of the state.
We're not sure about you, but delicious sweets always put a smile on our face. So, what better way to stay friendly than to live in a state that has both a state dessert and a state treat?
In 2011, the Maine House approved a compromise that would declare the whoopie pie the state "treat," while making the blueberry pie the state’s official "dessert." Of the decision, House Speaker Robert Nutting said, "off the record, I would say a heavy load has been lifted off our plate." Apparently, Maine has jokes too!
We might face some weather difficulties, but we're in it together.
When it comes to helping neighbors, Mainers are great. Need a lift? We've got you covered? Stuck in the snow? We're here for you! Plus, let's be honest, there's a lot to love about the winter. Snowmen, sledding, skiing, hot cocoa? That's a lot of cold weather fun to put a smile on your face!
Maine has 67 lighthouses, which means we love helping guide people home.
What better way to be friendly than to give great directions? Plus these navigational tools make for beautiful scenery and photographs - even if you can't get there from here.

Mainers love coming together to celebrate community.
Year after year, small and large towns come together for annual celebrations. And that's pretty friendly!
How do you feel about Maine’s place on the list? Do you think we should be higher on this list? Let us know in the comments. And, feel free to tell us why you think Vacationland is the friendliest state in America.
Sure, we’re friendly but there are a lot of other reasons why Maine is great. Personally, I love the food, the seasons, the locally-owned shops, and all the outdoor fun.

The most beautiful aerial footage of Maine exists for just about every region of the state. A few of our favorites capture the coast in a way that just can't be done on the ground. One of the best videos features places like Boothbay and Bristol. Another beautiful video managed to capture the state in just about every season.
