Marylanders know that our state has no shortage of beautiful scenery. You might have to venture out on the road to find it, but when you do, it’s absolutely worth it. One such place full of natural wonder is Annapolis Rock, a hiking trail out in Boonsboro. It’s part of the Appalachian Trail that makes for a worthwhile day trip drive from wherever you might be located in the Old Line State, and the trail leads you to a source of natural wonder that has to be seen to be believed.
The trail to Annapolis Rock is part of the world-famous Appalachian Trail, and so the route is clearly marked. It’s open year-round, so you can visit in the summer like I did or venture out and enjoy the colorful foliage in the fall!
The trail is popular with day hikers and with campers, and while it looks easy the elevation can be pretty intense. Be sure to bring along plenty of water. And I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this, but go ahead and make frequent stops to take in the beauty of the surrounding woods.
When the light hits the trees in the right way this trail transforms into a perfect outdoor mental escape. It’s serenely full of the music of chirping insects and singing birds.
From the top of the cliff that forms the Annapolis Rock you can see for miles, all the way out to Greenbriar Lake and beyond. The sight of the stone cutting above the greenery is a natural wonder that still feels like something out of a storybook.
The Annapolis Rock trail is certainly worth making the trip, and nearby Boonsboro happens to be one of my favorite Maryland towns for a weekend getaway.
