Imagine walking into a restaurant tucked away in an unassuming shopping plaza and having your tastebuds taken on a tour of the Bavarian Alps. You’ll have that experience at Hildegard’s, a German restaurant in Huntsville, Alabama, that has been a favorite locally and beyond for over two decades.

While the menu includes many traditional German foods, the schnitzel and sausages are the stars.

The perfectly hand-pounded schnitzels - thin slices of meat - are available in pork, veal, or chicken and with several preparation options for each. Pictured is a chicken schnitzel with spicy bell pepper sauce, for example. The menu features six types of sausages, from bratwurst to currywurst.
A special dish offered occasionally is roulade, which consists of a braised, seared, top-round steak filled with bacon, onion, pickle, and mustard, then drizzled with gravy.

Hildegard’s only offers a small number of these when they make them, so it’s wise to follow the restaurant on social to get the notice when it happens!
Traditional German pretzels - or laugen brezeln - come with housemade beer cheese and pair perfectly with an icy cold, imported German beer.

Don’t stop before you get to the sweets. You can expect staple cakes like Black Forest cake and German chocolate, plus a rotating variety of other options like cheesecake and cream horns.

I made my first-ever Black Forest cake this past New Year’s Eve using a mix purchased from European Market, also in Huntsville. Despite thinking it would be “an easy box-mix cake,” it was quite the undertaking. While it was delicious, let’s just say I am excited to know of a real-deal source for next time.

And speaking of forests, you can keep pretending you’re in a German fairy tale at Monte Sano State Park. Escape into the forest on one of the park’s many trails to discover waterfalls and other natural wonders. You won’t need to leave a trail of breadcrumbs or watch out for witches; just follow the trail maps.
