There are so many beautiful hikes and fantastic walking trails to enjoy in the great state of Massachusetts. However, sometimes I also like to head north and check out the scenic sites in New Hampshire. When I found out about the Nashua River Rail Trail, I didn’t have to decide where to travel. This scenic walk runs through parts of both New England states and is an ultimate outdoor playground must-see.

The Nashua River Rail Trail was built on the path of the former Boston and Maine Railroad. The trail begins in Ayer, Massachusetts, and runs 12 miles across state lines to Nashua, New Hampshire.

It is an easy, paved walk that takes just under four hours to complete from point to point.
The trail is a popular spot among hikers, joggers, walkers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and equestrians. Along the way, you see water views and beautiful foliage.

The trail runs through the towns of Ayer, Groton, Pepperell, and Dunstable.

If you are lucky, you may encounter turtles, beavers, deer, geese, and ducks.

You may also notice some “Granite Mile Marker” signs attached to the trees.

These markers were originally in use so that train crew could figure out their location along the Boston and Maine route.
When you pass through the town of Groton, be sure to stop at this kiosk.
