Five years ago, I temporarily moved out of the continental United States and spent some time living far from my beloved state of Massachusetts. During my time away, I would often encounter a taste, smell, or sight that would trigger a bit of homesickness deep inside. It was funny what would hit me off guard and remind me of home.

Every time I see a Hoodsie cup, I'm immediately transported back to childhood birthday parties. I can conjure up the taste of the creamy vanilla and chocolate swirl combination and feel the texture of the small wooden scooper used to eat the ice cream. These yummy treats have been a favorite among Bay Staters since 1947.
Ocean Spray is the only brand of cranberry juice that I will allow in my house. Maybe I am biased, but I think cranberries grown in Massachusetts just taste so much better than those from other parts of the country! You can find the Ocean Spray headquarters in Plymouth County.

Whenever I talk to out-of-state friends about candlepin bowling, they look at me like I am crazy. They just can’t fathom bowling using a ball without holes for their fingers and thumbs. In my opinion, this traditional New England variation where players take three rolls per turn is the best way to bowl!
Yankee Candle is another local brand that has become popular worldwide - and for good reason. I don't know many New Englanders who have not owned at least one of these fantastic products during their lifetime. The candles come in so many different scents and smell so good! The Yankee Candle Company originated in Western, MA, and its headquarters and enormous village store remain local in South Deerfield.
If you have never tasted a fluffernutter sandwich, then you probably don’t hail from Massachusetts. Although it is not the healthiest food to eat, the combination of creamy peanut butter and sticky fluff is absolutely delicious. In 1917 Marshmallow Fluff was invented in Somerville, Massachusetts and the fluffernutter sandwich subsequently became a popular food during the First World War. The delicious spread is so popular among locals, that it has its own annual celebration!
No matter where I am in the world, on the third Monday in April, I turn on the television to view the Boston Marathon coverage. This local Patriot’s Day tradition is one that always takes me back to the time I spent living in Boston when I could walk out my door and see the runners race by. 2023 marked the 127th running of the historic race.
Although it has been quite a while since I have taken in a game at Fenway Park, I always get a little bit nostalgic when I eat a Fenway Frank. One bite and I am back at the bleachers cheering on the Red Sox. While store-bought Fenway Franks are not quite the same as the dogs at the park, they always provide me with a little taste of home.

Whenever I see fried clams on the menu, it reminds me of summer dinners spent at local seafood restaurants. Casual beachside spots where you enjoy fresh seafood while taking in beautiful ocean views. Woodman's of Essex, home of the original fried clams is located on the state's North Shore.
While I realize that this last one might be a bit cliche, it is still very true! Bay Staters absolutely love their Dunkin! Luckily, Dunkin has franchises all over the world (I recently bought an iced coffee in the Bahamas!) where Massachusetts transplants can go to get their hometown coffee fix.
