You’ll find Leg’s Inn in Harbor Springs, Michigan which is roughly a half-hour from Mackinaw City nestled on the shores of Sturgeon Bay. Many Polish settlers came to this part of Michigan after leaving their homeland and their traditions live on at this beloved establishment.

The iconic stone exterior is tough to miss and is an indicator of the unique decor you’ll encounter inside. The name ‘Leg’s’ is actually inspired by the upturned table legs that are placed just above the roofline.

There’s something to see around every corner of this restaurant. The Smolak family has owned and operated this restaurant ever since they built it back in 1921. Every piece of decor has a place in the family’s history and tradition going back more than 100 years.

The menu is full of great food, but their authentic Polish recipes are what stand out the most. The Taste of Poland combines everything you need on one plate. Delicious meat-filled cabbage rolls called golabki, smokey kielbasa sausage, you choice of pirogies, and their famous cabbage.

One of the perks of being so close to the water is the opportunity for incredible dining views. If you come for the dinner service, it’s easy to find a quiet spot in their outdoor seating area to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan. This is what I (and many other Michiganders) call dinner with a show.

The other perk of being so close to Lake Michigan is access to freshly caught fish. You’ll always find their smoked whitefish dip and whitefish filets on the menu, and they always hit the spot. They also have a fresh catch of the day that came out of the lake the same morning you’ll be dining on it.

Maple Grill is located in Hemlock, Michigan which is a short drive west of Saginaw. On your way, you’ll drive by miles of scenic Michigan countryside. Many of the farms you’ll pass are the same ones that provide the ingredients for the delicious meals you’ll taste.

You can see how much they value farm fresh ingredients as soon as you arrive. Before you enter the restaurant you’ll walk through their herb garden, and you know that they use them all in their meals. That’s as fresh as it gets.

Pizza is one of those foods that is hard to get wrong, but there’s certainly a way to do it right. The pizza here is elevated with their farm-fresh ingredients. Like most of their items, these pies get a great flavor from their wood-fired oven.

Craft and microbrews in Michigan are plentiful. When I can find one that also comes with high-quality food pairings, it makes the “to try list” immediately. Maple Grill has 18 taps and they claim to have a flavor suited for anyone’s taste.

When you’re working with locally sourced ingredients, it’s not easy to create a consistent menu year round. However, when those recipes are as creative and flavorful as they are at Maple Grill, that variety is more of an advantage. For those who can return here often, trying something new is never an issue.

Mouth-watering steaks are easy to come by. You can find several cuts daily on their rotating menu. It’s hard to go wrong with anything off their wood-fired grill, but it’s exceptional char gives another level to these steaks.

Holland, Michigan, is a lakeside town with a population of just over 34,000.

The skies over Holland are typically beautifully blue, with occasional storms and/or cloud cover.

Dozens of calls began pouring in to 911 with panicked, confused and/or fascinated residents looking upward and wondering: what IS that thing?

Police were asked to check it out, and sure enough, there they were, hovering in the sky over the lake: the lights.

Its behavior over Lake Michigan was erratic and strange, with it making abrupt, high-speed maneuvers that aircraft we know of are not able to make.

To this day, witnesses have no idea what they saw... but some are certain it was not of this world.

You'll find Hoffman's Deco Deli along the bricks of Saginaw Street in downtown Flint, Michigan.

This is a new location for the deli, which renovated and moved into the space just a few years ago.

It's also a deep property, which is good, because Hoffman's does get some lines, especially at lunch time.

Folks flock to the eatery for classic deli sandwiches, like corned beef, ham, or turkey.

Hoffman's hot sandwiches do not disappoint. (It's really pretty amazing how much bacon the Deco Deli manages to stuff into its BLT!)

But Hoffman's Deco Deli is more than just sandwiches. You can order a variety of wraps - and keep your eye out for regular wrap specials.

And if you want something on the lighter side, you can order a salad. But Hoffman's salads are huge, too - not exactly "light."

The catering game at Hoffman's Deco Deli is strong. The shop is a popular choice among local groups and businesses for lunches and events.

You’ll find Johnson’s Pumpkin Patch roughly 15 miles northeast of Saginaw in the middle of the state. They stay open throughout the fall, closing down once November rolls around. They’re open daily from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m., except on Mondays when they open at 12 p.m. Families are welcome, but they do ask that you leave pets at home.

Their corn maze is one of their top attractions and one of the biggest around. It takes participants through 13 acres of twists and turns through the corn fields. The maze costs six dollars to enter, but that’s not asking much when admission to the farm is free.

You’ll find one of the biggest pumpkin patches in the state when you visit Johnson’s. There are more than 80 varieties here, with some pumpkins weighing as little as one pound or as much as 70 lbs. They have more than just pumpkins too, with different gourds and other fall decorations available.

You’ll feel like true harvest royalty with this amazing photo opportunity. The donut throne glamorizes my favorite part of fall, apple cider donuts. They also have a pumpkin throne which is perfect for taking selfies with your future jack-o-lantern.

Did I mention apple cider donuts? Well, they go the extra mile with these fall treats. They make them fresh every day, and you can choose from cinnamon sugar, sprinkle, or classic plain. These make the perfect snack for getting lost in a corn maze.

You can get the donuts and other fall decorations in their craft store. Each item is more unique than the next. Its 2,000-square-foot area provides enough space for more than 100 different vendors. You could visit Johnson’s simply for the craft store.

For those who really want to feel like they’re on the farm, you can visit the petting zoo they have on site. You’ll find goats, llamas, and even emus. Visitors can also purchase food to feed them. Even though they love their animals, Johnson’s does not allow pets. Certified service dogs are allowed on the grounds, just not in the petting zoo.

Copper Harbor is the northernmost community in the state. It may arguably have the most vivid display of fall colors as far as the eye can see.

Enjoy 9.5-mile Brockway Mountain Drive for sweeping vistas - Copper Harbor and Lake Superior to the left, and Lake Fanny Hooe on your right.

Then don’t miss a drive through the Tunnel of Trees - the 11-mile section of U.S. Highway 41, coming into Copper Harbor.

Fort Wilkins State Park is awash in fall splendor, home to the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, built in 1866.

Admire the 100-foot Manganese Falls, a bonus local waterfall.

One more spot where you can see the splendid fall scenery, this time via hiking trails, is Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary.

And if you need supplies – food, drinks, clothing, camping and hiking gear, pet goods, or a fishing license – The Gas Lite General Store, or The Genny, is the place to go.

North Manitou Island is part of the Manitou Island complex along with South Manitou Island. You can only access either location by personal boat or ferry. The ferries head out of Leeland, MI, and only make one trip to and from North Manitou. Once you land, you’ll be greeted by roughly 15,000 acres of open campground.

Travelers should be aware that this is not a day trip. You will have to spend at least one night under the stars, but it’s well worth it. This trip should only be made by very experienced hikers. You’re allowed to set up camp anywhere that’s at least 300 yards from the shoreline.

Campers will get off the ferry and immediately be faced with this nearly 170-year-old historic landmark. This used to be one of hundreds of United States life-saving Stations set up around the Great Lakes. While it operated from 1854 until 1932, this complex is the only USLSS that still stands.

The island's outer trail takes hikers around a 16.4-mile journey that touches Lake Michigan at several points. This trail takes travelers roughly five to six hours to complete. It’s only one of two main trails, however, the open terrain means you can branch off at any point.

The inner loop takes you on a beautiful 13.7-mile hike that takes you right past Lake Manitou. While it pales in comparison to the “Big Lake”, this is where hikers have the best chance to see the island wildlife. An isolated population of whitetail deer is often spotted here.

You’ll be able to camp in total isolation when you plan a trip here. The island is so remote that some people even woke up to some unexpected neighbors. It’s easy to take in the great outdoors and feel connected to nature as soon as you hop off the ferry.
