One of the greatest things about BBQ is there is no barrier to entry for aspiring pit masters. A great brisket can come from something as precise as a top-of-the-line smoker or as improvised as a hollowed-out steel barrel. However, it takes a lot of time and patience to create an award-winning BBQ dish. That’s exactly what they’ve done at Blue Tractor Barbeque, earning recognition from the Food Network as the best barbeque joint in Michigan.
You can find a Blue Tractor restaurant on both sides of the state.
Blue Tractor Barbeque made its start in Traverse City serving customers on the west side of the state. They also opened up a location in downtown Ann Arbor, only 45 minutes from Detroit. Regardless of where you’re located, it’s worth a drive to taste what’s coming out of their smokers.
The Food Network released its list of the top BBQ spots in every state for 2023. Taking home the honor for Michigan is Blue Tractor. Their favorites included the spice-rubbed, slow-smoked, hand-pulled pork and hickory-smoked chicken.
Michigan is known for its craft beers and local breweries. One of the signs of a great restaurant in the Mitten State is whether they carry some of these refreshments. You’ll find a wide variety of Michigan beers represented on tap at Blue Tractor.
According to the Food Network, the restaurant operates out of what used to be an 1886 saloon, a popular destination for farmers in the area. The name Blue Tractor pays homage to those who used to stop by the saloon after a long day’s work. It also honors those who still work in agriculture, often partnering with them for fresh ingredients to use in their recipes.
Food Network says several businesses have called this saloon home since it was built in 1886. This is where it all started for Blue Tractor, in a blue building to boot.
I can’t imagine a world where I’d head to Blue Tractor and get anything other than BBQ, but for those who want to prove me wrong, you won’t be disappointed with some of the classic Midwest favorites they have to offer. Dig into some of their juicy burgers, or get an order of smoked wings. Trust me, if you haven’t had smoked buffalo wings, you’re missing out.
Head downstairs for a nightcap after dinner (Ann Arbor only).
For those dining in Ann Arbor, head down to Mash right next door for a glass of what I consider BBQ’s best friend, whiskey. They have dozens of pours that come from all parts of the country as well as a menu of craft cocktails. The open brick interior really makes it feel like you’re sitting right next to where the barrels are aging the next batch of bourbon. They also frequently have live music.
Find out why Food Network is calling this the best BBQ joint in Michigan by taking a visit for yourself. Make sure to check the hours of operation depending on if you’re in Traverse City or Ann Arbor.
