There are few better ways to experience the best of autumn in the Land of 10,000 Lakes than lacing up your boots and getting out on the trail, surrounded by blazing colors of leaves at their peak. My personal favorite fall foliage hike in Minnesota is the Bluffside Trail loop at Frontenac State Park.

Frontenac State Park sits on the bluffs above and along the Mississippi River, between Red Wing and Lake City, at the head of Lake Pepin.

You’ll definitely experience some of the best fall foliage that you’ll find in the Land of 10,000 Lakes at Frontenac State Park, but there are plenty of other parks in this part of the state that are perfect for leaf peeping! I recommend packing up the car – don’t forget the road trip snacks – and putting together a fall foliage road trip. Start at Red Wing, then hit Frontenac State Park, Zumbro Bottoms Recreation Area, John Latsch State Park, Great River Bluffs State Park, and the Reno Recreation Area, and hike the trails in these gorgeous spots. The drive along the Mississippi River valley, through the most dramatic of Minnesota’s Bluff Country, is beautiful any time of year, but it is truly spectacular when when the bluffs are adorned in their autumn colors.
