There are many unique destinations in Alabama that are worthy of a visit. While most of these destinations are located in our much larger cities, several others can be found in the state’s smaller, rural towns. Listed below are seven rural destinations in Alabama that are certainly worth a visit.
Burnt Corn, AL 36460, USA
Burnt Corn is a tiny farming community that's located in both Monroe and Conecuh counties. It's also one of Alabama's oldest settlements. The former Lowrey's General Store and Post Office is Burnt Corn's most popular and recognizable building. The post office eventually closed in 2002.
Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge, 509 Wildlife Rd, Gilbertown, AL 36908, USA
The Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge, which is located along the Tombigbee River, covers a little more than 4,000 acres. Its primary purpose is to provide an area that protects waterfowl during the winter season.

Coon Dog Cemetery, 4945 Coondog Cemetery Rd, Cherokee, AL 35616, USA
The Coon Dog Cemetery, which is officially named "Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard," is one of Alabama's most unique tourist attractions. Located in the middle of nowhere, it was established in 1937 and it's a cemetery that only allows the burial of coon dogs. There's no other cemetery of its kind in the world.

The Payne Lake Recreation Area is a great destination for anyone who enjoy the outdoors. Its main feature is Payne Lake, and it's a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and camping.

Fruithurst is a tiny town that's located in Cleburne County, It has less than 300 residents and was a popular the site of a winery during the late nineteenth century. Because of this winery, Fruithurst was one of the most popular towns in the area.

Neversink Pit, also known as Neversink Cave Preserve, is one of the world's most photographed sinkholes. Cavers come from all over the world to capture pictures of its beautiful fern ledges and waterfalls. Neversink Pit has a 162-foot drop and can be safely explored using vertical caving skills.
Jim Bird's Hay Bale Art, 16040 US-43, Forkland, AL 36740, USA
Located on Highway 43 between Demopolis and Eutaw is Jim Bird's Farm. This unique farm features several unique creations, most of which were created using large bales of hay. There's no other attraction in Alabama quite like it.
