Stroll across the threshold and into The Cabbage Roll, an old-school German restaurant in St. Joseph, and you might swear you’ve been teleported to a small German village.

If you’re expecting a modern experience where the décor is shiny and new, you’ve come to the wrong place. This family-owned restaurant exudes Old World charm, with knick-knacks and tablecloths from yesteryear creating a warm ambiance.

Diners, in fact, rave about this St. Joseph restaurant and the friendly service that makes them feel right at home, comparing it to those long-gone meals at grandma’s home.

While the dining room is small, you won’t mind, especially once you sink your teeth into the homemade, authentic German cuisine. You now have the delicious dilemma of deciding what to order.

Cabbage rolls, Jagerschnitzel, schnitzel, and pierogis are among the tasty choices. Each entrée comes with two sides and bread and butter.

If you thought choosing the entrée was tough, wait until you see the sides. Dig into such German classics as hot German potato salad, American potato salad, or my favorite, the sweet and sour red cabbage.

The menu also features a few traditional sandwiches – Polish sausage, bratwurst, and meatloaf. Add a side – sauerkraut or German fried potatoes – or two to create the perfect meal.

The Cabbage Roll, which is typically open weekday afternoons, also features weekly specials that may include such favorites as cabbage roll sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, and ham and cheese quiche.

Situated within the industrial ruins of St. Louis' Rootwad Park is the now-defunct Cotton Belt Freight Depot. It was built in 1911 for the purpose of handling the movement of freight for the St. Louis Southwestern Railway.

This five-story freight depot stands out for its unique construction and eye-popping color amongst the otherwise drab and muted tones of the industrial park.

The oddly proportioned depot is 750 feet long and 30 feet wide, and its support beams now bear the markings of vibrant graffiti art.

It's difficult to imagine these graffiti-laden walls housing the hustle and bustle of a once-booming cotton industry.

However, as the cotton industry fell into decline, the depot was soon to follow. It officially closed its doors in 1959 and has been left to decay ever since.

Given the depot's state of disrepair and decay, some may wonder why the building is still left to remain standing at all. Surely, the city of St. Louis would want to demolish the factory and clean up this park to make way for new developments.

However, many see the value in preserving the relics from America's industrial past. As such, the Cotton Belt Freight Depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 21, 2004.

Today, the Cotton Belt Freight Depot remains integral to St. Louis' (and Missouri's) industrial history. It has also served as a center point for revitalization projects in the area for many years.

In fact, it was one of these such projects that led to the drawing of the vibrant "Migrate" mural scene, shown here, that was painted on its side. This mural can be spotted for miles due to the structure's height, the bright colors, and the unobstructed views of the structure for many miles.

Although the depot remains situated in a desolate and seemingly forgotten area of St. Louis, the city aspires to bring more life to the area. The mural is just one attempt to create a more inviting environment for the depot's presence.

Additionally, the depot is the home to the annual grassroots outdoor art festival known as "Artica." Indeed, this old depot still has a lot of life left within its walls.

Perhaps best known as Mark Twain’s boyhood home, the darling town of Hannibal offers so much to do, especially during the colorful days of fall.

You’ll have plenty of ways to admire the fall foliage, especially if you’re up for an adventure. Drink in some of the most breathtaking views, especially drenched in fall’s colors, when you stop by Lovers Leap.

Book a ride aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat. As you meander down the Mississippi River, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of the foliage and the scenery as it passes by.

If you’re up for another adventure, slip on your hiking shoes and follow the two-mile loop trail that winds through Sodalis Nature Preserve. The 200-acre nature preserve is an idyllic destination, especially when splashed in fall’s colors.

While you’ll find plenty of good eats and eclectic shops in Hannibal, be sure to keep an eye on the calendar, too, for one of the seasonal events the town hosts.

For more than 45 years, Hannibal has hosted the Annual Hannibal Folklife Festival, a two-day event that celebrates the small town’s heritage with delicious food, lively entertainment, and countless vendors.

Halloween doesn’t signal the end of the fall fun, at least in Hannibal. Head to this charming small town the first weekend of November for PumpkinPalooza, an epic event that’s all about pumpkin spice and pumpkin spice goodies.
