Every summer the nighttime sky puts on a breathtaking show as meteors dart above us. We can all view the spectacular Perseid meteor shower no matter where we live in the state. We just have to find a dark spot, away from pollution, and turn our eyes to the sky. However, for some of the best views of the peak night of this annual event, head over to this state park in Wildwood, Missouri.
Spend an evening under the stars at Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park in Wildwood, where you can watch the Perseid meteor shower on Aug. 12, 2023, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
An annual celestial event, the meteor shower is set to peak overnight on Aug. 12-13. During the peak, stargazers can often spot between 90 and 100 meteors an hour dart across the nighttime sky.
The event will take place at the monument field where you’ll be able to look through telescopes courtesy of the St. Louis Astronomical Society. You might even see a meteor or two once the sun goes down.
Before you head over to the park, though, make sure you have everything you need for a comfy and successful evening. Organizers recommend wearing closed-toed shoes.
Be sure to also bring warm clothing, chairs and/or blankets, binoculars, and red flashlights. Since it can get quite buggy, don’t forget the bug spray. Pack water and snacks, too, if you want.
Don’t worry if you can’t make it to this Missouri state park. You can view the meteor shower, which runs through the end of August, from anywhere. Just make sure you find an area that’s as free of light pollution as possible.
Have you been to this state park in Wildwood, Missouri? Will you visit to catch the Perseid Meteor Shower? (Don’t forget to bring binoculars.) Let us know in the comments! Before you gather to view the meteor shower, how about going on a scenic hike along this wildflower trail at this Missouri state park?
