To people not familiar with Montana, it might seem like a hard place to cool down. With no coast, it’s common to assume that the only relief comes from running through sprinklers in the summer. That certainly could not be further from the truth. Montana has more than 3,223 named lakes and countless rivers, streams, and creeks. When the temperatures rise, there’s nothing more fun than a day on the water. This reservoir in Montana is off-the-beaten-path, but it’s a fantastic way to beat the heat without as many crowds as larger lakes and rivers.

While not a huge lake or a raging river, this lesser-known body of water offers as much fun as any of the other waterfront escapes in the state.

Visitors enjoy the opportunity for boating, fishing, camping, and swimming. It's great for a day trip, but I love the idea of camping overnight to make it a fun weekend getaway.

The fish here include things like bass, northern pike, and walleye. And above the water, visitors should look out for things like blue herons, osprey, deer, and antelope. There have even been bald eagle sightings at the park.

There are 81 campsites, but day use is popular among those who know the park exists. In addition to picnic areas and a playground, there's also a beach. Sand Point offers a small area where swimmers can wade into the water to cool down.

The Tongue River Reservoir State Park in Decker is open daily throughout the year. Campgrounds are also open year-round, though only a few sites offer electricity and this is reduced during the off-season.
