We all love the Jersey Shore – but how many New Jersey residents know all of it? Of course, there’s the shore making its way up and down the Garden State’s Atlantic coast, with its world-famous views and attractions. Then there’s the Delaware Water Gap coast, much less known but full of affordable summer getaways. Then there’s the southern coast, home to rural Cumberland County – and it might just be the best-kept secret in the state. This is a heavy fishing and blue-collar area, and it can be a long drive to get there. That’s why I was so surprised to find the best rural seafood restaurant in NJ, The Red Eyed Crab, hiding in the tiny community of Port Norris. It might just have the best seafood in New Jersey, in a wonderfully out-of-the-way location that’s more than worth the drive.

Have you visited this rural seafood restaurant in NJ, hidden in the town of Port Norris? Tell us about your visit to The Red Eyed Crab, and your favorite out-of-the-way destinations, in the comments section. The Red Eyed Crab keeps a low profile online, as is fitting for a humble seafood shack, but you can keep an eye on The Red Eyed Crab Facebook page for the latest specials. If you want to learn more about the rural areas of South Jersey, consider a trip down the Bayshore Heritage Scenic Byway. Make sure to bring all the essentials for the road!
