I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and I love photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world! Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream.
One thing among many that I love about New Mexico is the mountains that seem to make the Land of Enchantment all the more enchanting. It may come as no surprise that in such an enchanting state there are enchanting hikes, one of which can be found in the mountain town of Angel Fire. Known best as a ski resort town, one mustn’t overlook all the outdoor fun to be had during other times of the year. Between ziplining and hiking, Angel Fire is a paradise for those who love exploring the great outdoors. And if there’s one enchanting hike in New Mexico to try, it’s the Enlightenment Trail right here in Angel Fire.
Set in the Rocky Mountains, the village of Angel Fire is a popular ski destination in the winter. However, it's also a wonderful spot for ziplining and hiking.
One enchanting hike here in Angel Fire you may want to try, if you're able, is along the Enlightenment Trail. It's a lightly traversed trail so you may have it all to yourself and the scenery and views are nothing short of spectacular!
A hike like this requires extra preparation. Definitely bring plenty of water with you, a good pair of hiking boots, and hiking poles. You can check out our hiking essentials packing list for some ideas.
Of course, you don't have to do this lengthy out-and-back trail in its entirety. You can hike as much as you can. In fact, the first couple of miles are relatively easy. The closer to the summit, the steeper it becomes.
You also have the option of taking the ski lift up the mountain and hiking down. However, even with this "easier" option, you should still come prepared with hiking boots, water, poles, and other gear and take your time on the descent.
Have you taken the Enlightenment Trail in Angel Fire? Would you agree It’s quite an enchanting hike in New Mexico? Let us know along with some of your favorite hikes around the state.
