Coming in October is a celestial phenomenon you won’t want to miss. A solar eclipse will be visible in the skies and parts of New Mexico will have a front-row seat to view it. If witnessing this incredible astronomical event is something that interests you, here are the best spots to view the 2023 solar eclipse in New Mexico.
Save the date of October 14, 2023 for the celestial event of a lifetime! An annular eclipse will be seen throughout many parts of the country including New Mexico.
So, what is an annular eclipse? An annular eclipse occurs when the moon is at its furthest point from our planet and passes between the Earth and Sun. This creates an effect of a glowing ring around the moon which is blocking the sun.
You will be able to see the eclipse at 90% in places like Farmington, Albuquerque, Roswell, and Hobbs, New Mexico. Outside of that path, which includes Carlsbad, you can see the eclipse at 80%.

Starting in the northeast corner of New Mexico in the city of Farmington, you can view the eclipse at Glade Run Recreation Area. At this 19,000-acre park with 42 miles of hiking trails, you'll be able to see the eclipse at 10:35 a.m.
In Albuquerque, also around 10:35 a.m., one of the best places to see the eclipse is the Petroglyph National Monument which stretches for 17 miles. Other places to consider viewing the eclipse in the area include the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, the Cibola National Forest, and Piedras Marcadas Canyon.

Heading southeast, you'll be able to see the eclipse around 10:40 a.m. in Roswell. Bottomless Lakes State Park and its lake and expanse of land will make for an excellent place to view the eclipse. Perhaps you can rent a kayak and view this much-anticipated astronomical event from the water.

Toward the border of New Mexico and Texas is the town of Hobbs. One place to view the annular eclipse in Hobbs is at McAdams Park. You can even set up camp at the park's campground and make a getaway out of it! The eclipse will occur around 10:45 a.m. over Hobbs.
So, where will you be on October 14, 2023? The eclipse will start in the northwest corner of the state and make its way over southeast New Mexico between 10:35 a.m. MDT and 10:45 a.m. MDT.
