Is there anything more fun for the whole family than a trip to a playground? We don’t think so, but it’s important that the play space is able to accommodate kids of all sorts, regardless of their physical or mental abilities. Luckily, for those visiting or living in New York City, there is Bloomingdale Playground. It might just be the most inclusive playground in New York City. For more information, please keep reading, below.
Bloomingdale Playground used to be known as the P.S. 145 Playground. It was renamed in 1997 to better capture the history of the neighborhood in which it lies—the Upper West Side was referred to as Bloomingdale by 17th century Dutch and Flemish settlers.
The playground itself has a lot of history. It opened in 1962 and went through a serious renovation in 1989, which added a bridge, a climbing structure with a slide, and swing sets to the playground. In 1998, the playground's equipment was replaced.
In 2018, another major reconstruction took place. The main goal of this multi-tiered rejuvenation effort was to expand the accessibility and the quality of the park. The project fully reconstructed all play equipment—the redesign makes the playground much more accessible for children and adults of all mental and physical levels.
The playground is both sensory-friendly and wheelchair accessible. It features an ADA-accessible comfort station. There are swings accessible for those under the age of five.
For an excellent, inclusive playground in New York City, Bloomingdale Playground should be at the top of any family’s list. While in New York City, why not check out some great food from this burger chain or head on over to a massive flea market in Brooklyn? And, for those looking to stay the night, we recommend Warwick New York, which is located in Midtown Manhattan and features marble bathrooms and not one but two onsite restaurants.
