We can’t get enough of Amador county! With vineyards, hidden lakes, hiking trails, and some of the most charming towns in this state, Amador County is a destination you’re guaranteed to like.
This county covers part of the Central Valley, as well as many towns in the foothills, plus an area of the mountains.
Amador includes the towns of Sutter Creek, Amador City, Fiddletown, and Jackson, known as “The Heart of the Motherload”. Stay at the Gold Country Campground Resort in Pine Grove. This family-friendly campground has a swimming pool, mini golf, and a water playground. For something a little more private, we like this charming Victorian in Jackson.
As you drive north along Highway 101 the landscape changes from bucolic coastal towns to fairytale-like redwoods.
This stretch of highway runs right through the Redwood National and State Parks. This string of forests have the world’s tallest trees, some of which are 2,000-years-old.
You have to drive on the Avenue of the Giants. It is a place you’ll never forget! Since this forested area is right next to the beach, end your days spending time sitting in the sand. Wilson Creek Beach is located just north of the Trees of Mystery and is a picturesque beach where you can go tide-pooling and maybe even spot a whale.
There are so many beautiful towns and wildlife areas in the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta.
If the weather is warm enough, rent a boat to explore the Delta. Even in cooler months the Delta provides many great spots for fishing and bird watching.

This city by the bay has some highly rated restaurants to try. You can easily eat your way through the city. Or, spend an entire day exploring all Golden Gate Park has to offer.
From Orland in the north to Madera, near Fresno, the Central Valley is a treasure trove of small country towns. In these towns you'll find some excellent food, plus thrift shops, tons of fruit stands, and even some relatively unknown museums.
When you're driving through Turlock, be sure to stop at Dust Bowl Brewery. Dust Bowl has several locations in California but this is the largest. Spend some time relaxing outside and drinking local brew.
If you're exploring the Central Valley area north of Sacramento, one of the best hidden gem towns is Colusa. The downtown is filled with Victorian houses, a lovely riverfront park, and a happening restaurant with live music located over the Sacramento River.
So even if you don’t have a ton of PTO, these weekend trips prove that so much fun can be had in just two days! There is something for everyone in this great state. Whether you want to experience the jaw-dropping redwoods, relax on the Delta, or eat your way through the Central Valley, these trips provide five good reasons why you should abandon your weekend to-do list and get out of town.
