If you’re on the hunt for a perfect fall day trip in Northern California, look no further than the charming small town of Dunsmuir. Ready to do some shopping? Dandelion Dust Boutique is a hidden gem with all sorts of fun items to discover– from clothing, home decor, jewelry and much more.

If you want to stay for a night, consider the Cave Springs Resort. We love this place for its proximity to downtown, as well as two waterfalls– both Mossbrae Falls and Hedge Creek Falls are within walking distance.

These waterfalls are really stunning in autumn when the leaves on the surrounding trees have changed colors. Dunsmuir Inn & Suites is an affordable and charming hotel located right in the heart of town and near the train station.

On September 29 to October 1, Dunsmuir is hosting the 10th annual Jazz in the Canyon festival. The event honors a broad range of jazz styles. Plan ahead for a weekend of fall foliage, plus jazz music, if this event interests you!
If you don’t feel like driving and would prefer to look out the window on your way to Dunsmuir, take the Amtrak into town.

The station runs right through the town, so you can explore it on foot. From Sacramento the train takes about five hours, and from Redding the train takes less than two hours.
