I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
My mom hails from Mount Vernon, but I grew up in Cincinnati. So when I was little, my brothers and I would pile into the back of the 1970s Suburban my parents purchased from my grandparents, and make the 2.5-hour drive to the heart of the Buckeye State. Galena signaled the last stretch of the road trip, and there were several restaurants in this rural locale that we frequented. Cheshire Market was one of them; it opened in 1986 and while it’s remained a hidden gem to most Ohioans, locals in the area know it as the best pizza in Galena — and, in my opinion, Ohio!
I'm going to start by saying that, if you're looking for a fancy, Insta-worthy, hipster kind of pizzeria, you won't find it here.
Since 1986, Cheshire Market has been a community cornerstone in Galena, Ohio. It's a little convenience store known for its immense array of live bait and tackle... and the best pizza in Galena, Ohio!
While these things might seem to be at odds -- a-bait-shop-meets-convenience-store-meets-pizzeria? -- it all makes perfect sense once you step inside... and taste the pizza. If you like your 'za topped with curled-up pepperoni that covers every square inch, well, you're in for quite a treat!
Vegetarians need not worry; Cheshire Market offers veg-friendly pies that are every bit as delicious as their meat-laden counterparts! I personally like my pizzas with tons of green peppers, mushrooms, and olives... so good!
For those looking for a portable, hand-held option for the road, Cheshire Market makes a mean stromboli that's a dreamy, cheesey masterpiece! Think calzone, but instead of a folded-up pie, it's more of a burrito. I don't make the rules; I just know it's delicious! But of course, that's a common theme at Cheshire Market.
In short, you have lots of delicious options at this humble little bait shop/convenience store/pizzeria... so be sure and stop in on your next Ohio road trip.
If you’ve yet to try the pizza from Cheshire Market, I absolutely recommend adding it to your list of must-visit Ohio restaurants! It’s the perfect detour/pit stop as you’re enjoying a scenic drive through central Ohio.
