There is nothing quite like wading (or jumping) into a cool, refreshing river. Lucky for us residents of the Beaver State, Oregon boasts many wonderful options for beautiful, swimmable river beaches, from the Columbia River in Hood River to the Deschutes River in Bend. And on a warm, sunny day you’re sure to find lots of like-minded folks playing in the water or hanging out along the shore. However, crowds can sometimes damper the fun.

Thankfully, there are still plenty of peaceful, lesser-known spots to discover, particularly if you don’t mind (and are able) to trek a bit to get there. Case and point, a lovely swimming spot along the Sandy River that my friends and I call Secret Beach. Well, the secret’s out! We invite you to escape the crowds for a lovely, tranquil swim. The best part is that you won’t even need to go too far from a more popular river beach in order to get there. Simply take a 15 to 30-minute hike from Dodge Park to arrive at this relatively remote and peaceful beach along the Sandy River.

If you want more information on swimming at the Sandy River, check out the Dodge Park website. If you’re hungry after your swim, try the sandwiches, snacks, and soft serve at Sugarpine Drive-In. And if you’re looking for a place to stay overnight, try a rental near the Sandy River.
