South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
It’s no secret that we love to brag on the Palmetto State. South Carolina definitely has a lot going for it, yet, in all of its glory it’s also got its share of quirks. And there are some things that only South Carolinians understand. Let’s touch on a few, just for fun.
1. We sure are proud of being the birthplace of sweet tea, Summerville, South Carolina, so much so that we hold the record also for having the World's Largest Sweet Tea.
2. And that pride doesn't stop with the sweet tea. We're also the birthplace of BBQ and mustard-based sauce. If you haven't tried it yet, we'd recommend Bessinger's! You might even run into a celebrity while there.
4. Seeing sweetgrass baskets being woven around the Charleston City Market while exploring the Holy City is one of the highlights of visiting the #1 city in America. And though it's not that only South Carolinians would understand this experience, rather, the history behind it. This beautiful print is available for purchase on Etsy.
5. It feels next to impossible to cool down during a summer heat wave in South Carolina. But we do have some ideas for things to do on a hot summer day to at least stay busy and have some fun!
6-8. Yeah, yeah ... we know we're not the only ones with absolute crazed, die-hard sports rivals. But seriously – there's nothing like the age-old rivalry between the Tigers and the Cocks.
9. Back to birthplaces, the "Carolina Shag" is thought to have originated along the Atlantic Ocean in Cherry Grove Beach, South Carolina during the 1940s. The dance has been a South Carolina staple ever since. And after all, parts of the Shag movie were, in fact, filmed in Myrtle Beach!
10. Pawleys Island is known around the world for its amazing hammocks, a symbol of the laid-back way of life people seek out when moving to South Carolina. Check out the Hammock Shops Village if you'd like to get your own Pawleys Island hammock!
Of course, there’s no way to cover all the things that only South Carolinians understand in a single article. This was just a crash course. Give us your thoughts. What other things would you include in, say, a top 10 list?
