When America’s favorite season rolls around, we’re happy to enjoy once again all the things fall is made of, that is, cozy fires, pumpkin spice, and everything nice, of course. And those beautiful, brightly colored leaves certainly fall into the everything nice category. The charming small town of Sunset is perfect for a fall day trip in South Carolina to soak in as much of that type of scenery as possible in a day.
Now, Sunset is a really small town with a population of over 2,000 people. The beautiful Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway runs straight through Sunset, passing by its tiny post office.
And although there are very few restaurants in Sunset, there are a few along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, which spans almost 120 miles.
Keowee-Toxaway State Park is really a must-visit for a Sunset fall day trip, where gorgeous fall foliage frames Lake Keowee with the Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop. This is just one view you'll have from the Raven Rock Loop Trail, one of four trails to explore at the park.
Also at the park, you'll find Camp Cedar Creek, which offers a a gathering spot for any group looking to experience the great outdoors together. It includes a lodge meeting/dining hall with a kitchen area, two picnic shelters, a fishing pier, large group firepit area, three bunkhouse-style cabins, ten rustic campsites, and a bathhouse with restrooms and showers. This would be an ideal place for a fall family reunion!
The Sassafras Mountain Observation Tower in this charming small South Carolina town is another bucket list adventure for a day trip in the fall, with 50-mile views of four states. You can stand in two states at once here and reach the highest elevation in the state of South Carolina!
A horseback ride is a unique way to enjoy the beauty of the fall season. Saddle View Outfitters offers guided horse trail rides along the scenic trails of the Cliffs, Keowee Vineyards in Sunset.
You can ride to the mountain tops or in the valleys by the creeks, and you might get to see deer, turkeys, and other wildlife! Take a picnic lunch to enjoy on the trail.
Last, but certainly not least, we can't think of a better time for ziplining than during the fall. The weather is perfect (given it's not raining!) and, again, timed right you won't have a better show from nature to look at. Pack a pair of high-quality binoculars for your fall day trip in South Carolina to make the most of whatever sightseeing opportunities may come along. You just never know what you might spot while out in nature.
