There’s something so very enchanting about small towns, isn’t there? Sometimes, the smaller the better – you can find some true gems hidden among some of the state’s least-populated towns. Take, for example, the tiny community of Hermosa. It’s one of the prettiest tiny towns in South Dakota, and with a population of just over 380 people (as of 2020), it’s one of our state’s smallest. Don’t assume that means that it isn’t worth visiting, though; in fact, Hermosa makes for a cute day trip in South Dakota with plenty of attractions in and near town.

Hermosa is a sleepy little town that hasn't changed a whole heck of a lot since its establishment in 1886.

You'll find it tucked away near the northernmost edge of Custer County, and you'll be amazed at how big the spirit of this small town is.
Hermosa means "beautiful" in Spanish, and it most certainly lives up to its name.

The town is full of historic buildings, cute local restaurants, mom-and-pop shops, and plenty of peace and quiet.
Tour the town and check out some of the oldest buildings that are still standing, like the Hermosa Bank on Main Street.

There are a number of local restaurants you'll never find anywhere else, too, like the legendary Lintz Brothers Pizza.
Hermosa is also home to one of our all-time favorite mom-and-pop shops, Farmhouse Vintage & Design.

Other local joints worth mentioning include the Old Hermosa Coffee House and the Lazy R Bar & Grill.
Once you've had your fill of the in-town attractions and shops, you can take your pick from a long list of amazing nearby attractions.

That's easily one of my favorite things about this town - it's located close to seemingly everything.
