This Hidden Swimming Hole With Amazing Views In South Dakota Is A Stellar Summer Adventure

Tucked into Pennington County, about two miles from Mount Rushmore, is a sparkling, stunningly beautiful lake that’s perfect for a day trip (or longer). It is absolutely pristine, and it’s a beloved alternative to the busier, more crowded lakes in South Dakota (though this one is popular among locals, so come out on a weekday and/or early in the morning and you’ll have better odds of some quality alone time). Come check out what I suspect could also be the best swimming hole in South Dakota: It’s Horsethief Lake, and it’s an absolute doozy when it comes to incredibly beautiful places in our little corner of the nation.
Sitting at an elevation of 4,905 feet above sea level, you could definitely say Horsethief Lake is a wonderful little "alpine" secret (one that's definitely out now).
This lake is probably one of the most breathtakingly pristine places I've ever seen. The water is so clean and clear that it perfectly mirrors the endless blue skies above, giving the whole lake a shimmering, blue appearance.

Even better still, the landscape and geography surrounding the lake is utterly awesome. The views are jaw-dropping.
The whole package really is something special, and I can't help but feel a little bit of pride that it's ours. This is one you'll definitely want to bring your camera for.
If you'd like, you can take a (non-motorized) boat out to the center of the water and fish... or simply relax.
Once upon a time, this lake probably wasn't so chill - after all, it got its name thanks to being a favorite hideout of - you guessed it - a gang of horse thieves. South Dakota was totally a part of the wild, wild west - even if it's often considered the "Midwest."
You'll also find fascinating historic structures and some of the best camping in the nation close to the lake.
You can't stay in the old cabins, but Horsethief Lake Campground has you covered in terms of RV and tent camping. I've always envied the folks who can simply decide to stay a while - and do.
But it's okay - reservations can be made on Recreation.gov and are definitely encouraged.
