If you have driven near the Point of the Mountain along the Wasatch Front, you may have seen something unique up in the sky. It wasn’t a bird or a plane – it was a hang glider or paraglider. You may not realize it but located along Interstate 15 on Frontage Road in Draper is Flight Park State Recreation Area. Here, you don’t hike and fish like you might at other state parks or recreation areas in the state — rather you take in the views from above. And people from all over the world come to enjoy this incredible area.
Flight Park State Recreation Area became an official state park in 2006 by Governor John Huntsman Jr. Utah State Parks and the Utah Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association partner to maintain this incredible and unique area in Utah.
But, it isn’t just Utahns that come to experience this extraordinary adventure. People travel from all around the world to learn and train here. Each year, approximately 700 pilots fly at the Utah Flight Park and up to 30 percent of those pilots are from out of the state or another country.
If you are interested in viewing this incredible recreation area and the Wasatch Front from high above, you can learn at a number of flight schools in the area.
There is a 2-week stay limit at the campground and fires are not allowed. There is also a camp fee per night and there are 15 designated campsites.
But, regardless of whether you stay for a while, you are a beginner, or you are an experienced hang glider or paraglider, there truly is no better view of Flight Park State Recreation Area than from above.
