For most of us, myself included, getting to Kiptopeke State Park requires quite a journey — not to mention a drive along the famous and iconic Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Rest assured, though, it’s worth the effort. In addition to being completely remote, this park is gorgeous, and it’s the perfect place to escape. Nestled on the banks of Virginia's Eastern Shore, Kiptopeke State Park is easily one of Virginia's most beloved treasures.
Visiting this park, you won't help but feel an extraordinary sense of adventure. In 1608, Captain John Smith himself is said to have explored this area.
Amenities abound at Kiptopeke State Park, which is home to RV and tent camping, a boat ramp, a lighted fishing pier, picnic areas, a beach bathhouse, and 5.1 miles of hiking and biking trails to enjoy.
These 9 concrete ships were part of a collection of 24 that were requested by the U.S. Maritime Commission during WWII. The ships are located about a quarter of a mile from the shore, and can be explored up-close if you rent a kayak at the pier.
