There’s an island in Wisconsin that you don’t need a boat to reach – all you need to explore Governor’s Island is a pair of walking shoes. This Madison island is not one of the area’s best known attractions, but it’s a beautiful place for a Wisconsin fall walk. Here’s what you need to know about hiking Governor’s Island.

You’ll find Governor’s Island on Lake Mendota. The lake is located in Dane County in south-central Wisconsin.

It is situated to the north of the city of Madison, and it is part of the Yahara River chain of lakes.
The lake is a popular destination for various recreational activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, and ice skating in the winter.

There are a few places where it’s possible to enjoy a nice lakeshore hike.
Governor’s Island is a great place for a walk. You’ll find the island on the lake’s northeast shore, near Mendota Mental Health Institute, a state psychiatric hospital.

To reach the island you’ll pass the hospital’s grounds and travel down a steep road to the lake.
Because the island is connected to the land via a man-made causeway, it’s easy to reach.

The island covers 60 acres, and it has a hiking path that traces the shore. If you hike the road in, you can enjoy a walk that’s about a mile in length.
The island has a bit of history. Native Americans long called this place home, and in the 1800s, Leonard Farwell, Wisconsin’s second governor, lived here.

There also used to be a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright on the island, but it burned down in the 1930s.
