There’s more to the circus than elephants and jugglers. Baraboo, Wisconsin, is a town that’s all about the big top, and there’s even a brewery in a building with deep circus roots. The AL. Ringling Brewing Co. in Baraboo is a historic and vibrant brewery that draws on the Ringling family’s circus legacy, while it celebrates the brewing heritage of the area. It’s a Wisconsin brewery you have to visit – here’s why.
The AL. Ringling Brewing Co. pays homage to the Ringling family, who left an indelible mark on Baraboo's history.
As the hometown of the Ringling Brothers Circus, Baraboo has a deep connection to the Ringling family, and the brewery seeks to honor their contributions and legacy.
The brewery is located in the historic AL. Ringling Mansion. The grand home was built in 1906, and it was home to circus showman AL. Ringling and his wife Lou.
The Ringling family enjoyed a pint or two. Years after Al passed, a beer recipe was discovered under the floorboards of the mansion. “The Ringling Family Original” inspired a brewery that’s a must-visit spot in Baraboo.
The brewery has a lively outdoor patio, a full food menu, and it sometimes hosts live music. You can see the brewing process inside, on a stage area of the mansion that’s lit with colored lights.
The brewery features some great beers of various styles, including the light and classic prohibition-style ale recipe puled from the floorboards – the Ringling Original.
I recently visited this brewery and got to meet the brewmaster – it’s an awesome little place. Learn more about the Ringling Brewing Co. on the brewery’s website.
