1. The first to dedicate a monument to George Washington.

Everyone has heard of DC's Washington Monument, but Baltimore paid tribute to George Washington even before that. Built in 1815, this tall structure is now the centerpiece of the Mount Vernon neighborhood.

2. Home to the first cathedral in the U.S.

This grand structure is known as The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. You can visit America's first cathedral to experience splendor and history.

3. The first dental school in America.

This natural wonder is located at Patapsco Valley State Park. With over 30,000 acres of park, there's a lot to explore here! The park covers parts of Baltimore and Howard Counties. It's just a 25-minute drive from Baltimore City and it's the perfect spot for a hike. The trail to the waterfall is short and sweet, making it definitely worth your while if you're looking for Baltimore hiking trails with waterfalls.

2. Gunpowder Falls at Gunpowder Falls State Park

Drive just half an hour and you'll find Gunpowder Falls State Park. This one lies in Baltimore County and Harford County and it's a great park that has one of our favorite lazy rivers in Baltimore. Since the Gunpowder River flows through most of the park, you'll spot tons of waterfalls and gentle rapids throughout your journey, whether you're in a tube or on solid ground.

Kilgore Falls is in Rocks State Park and not only is it absolutely gorgeous, but it's also a popular swimming spot in warmer months. Let the waterfall cascade down your back if you want to make the most of a refreshing day. It takes about 50 minutes to get here from the middle of Baltimore, but trust us, the drive is worth it for this much relaxation!

4. Great Falls in Potomac

The mighty Potomac River flows through this majestic spot, where one side is Maryland and the other in Virginia. The drive to get here from Baltimore takes about an hour. These are some roaring rapids and they're even more impressive after a heavy rainfall. This is one of the most beautiful places in Maryland (and Virginia).

5. Cunningham Falls at Cunningham Falls State Park

Cunningham Falls State Park is a little over an hour away from Baltimore. It's home to the highest cascading waterfall in Maryland and a beautiful beach. 1. Miracle on 34th Street

We of course have to start with Baltimore's famous Miracle on 34th Street, found in the Hampden neighborhood. This entire block of historic rowhomes goes all out with Christmas lights and unique sculptures. It's an annual must-see.

2. Symphony of Lights at Merriweather

The grounds of Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia transform into a twinkling light display each year. The animated light displays are vibrant and full of whimsy. Cost is $20 per vehicle except on walk through nights. Check it out November 24 through January 1.

3. Lights on the Bay

This drive-through display also runs November 20 through January 1, with a cost of $20 per car (and more for larger vehicles). The route winds through Sandy Point State Park, making for a magical night, indeed.

4. Winter Lights at Seneca Creek State Park

November 25 through December 31, you can see this vibrant drive-through display located at Seneca Creek State Park. Cost is $15 Monday through Thursday, and $25 Friday to Sunday (additional fees for larger vehicles).

5. Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens

Brookside Gardens is gorgeous year-round, and it somehow becomes even more so during the holiday season. This walk-though light display is enchanting as can be, with storybook characters and magnificent creatures. Cost is $10 per person.

6. Festival of Lights at Watkins Regional Park
