]]>1. "I’m going to take the T today."
Commuting sucks, but at least Bostonians have the option of taking public transit, a.k.a. "The T." If you think about it, this term makes it sound as if we’re carrying iced tea to some unspecified location when actually we’re just taking the Green Line. And if you aren’t rolling your eyes when the Green Line is mentioned, it’s because you’re not from here. Otherwise, you’d know that it equates to a slow commute because you'll be riding a trolley, not a train.
2. "I got stuck on the Pike forever."
While this is also called Mass Pike, you won’t hear it referred to by its full name: the Massachusetts Turnpike. If you’re from out of town and expect to be able to use cash at a toll plaza, you’re out of luck. They were discontinued in 2016 and now it’s E-Z Pass all the way. No pass? No problem. The vaguely threatening signs assure you that you’ll be paying by plate. In other words, you’ll be tracked down by your license plate, which is in no way stalkerish or creepy.
3. "All the drivers on the Pike are chowderheads."
Except you of course — because you wouldn’t refer to yourself as stupid! Despite the fact that this guy is literally carrying chowder on his head, he is probably not a chowderhead. Just a guy who is popular at Fenway.
4. "I got in a car accident today because this total Masshole decided to bang a uey and crashed into me."
Although all Massachusetts residents can technically be "Massholes," Boston drivers are often on the receiving end of this — ahem — term of endearment. To bang a uey just means to make a U-turn.
5. "I had to pull into the breakdown lane."
In other places, this is known as the shoulder. If you need to use it then you’re probably already having a bad day. To make things worse, there’s a fair chance you’ll encounter a Masshole or two zipping down the breakdown lane. During rush hour on certain roads, this is legal, but speeding here is particularly dangerous.
6. "Alls I know is that he deserved to get bagged. Where’s a statie when you need one?"
Here’s a hint: if you get bagged, you’ll be posing for a mugshot. A statie is a state trooper. Out-of-staters take note… our state police don’t ride around in black-and-white vehicles. Instead, they cruise across Massachusetts in appealing two-tone vehicles in hues of blue that look like they should be called "rich navy" and "ocean fog."
7. "I had to wear a johnny and you know that means there was a breeze on my butt."
Get your mind out of the gutter! A johnny is a hospital gown. The breeze on your butt is an unfortunate side effect of wearing one. Sometimes Boston expressions make no sense, but that's what makes it truly local slang.
8. "Is anyone making a Dunks run? Because I’d kill for some coffee regular."
Here in Boston, we have coffee in our veins. Specifically coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts. Coffee regular means your beverage has cream and sugar. How much? Usually two creams and two sugars for a small coffee. Boston runs on Dunkin!
9. "Remember when I rented that huge, cheap apartment near the Garden, on Comm Av?"
Yeah, that was definitely a dream. But, even when you wake up, you’ll still abbreviate streets named "Avenue" to "Av."
10. "My friend just moved into a three-decker."
This type of Boston-area building is also called a triple decker, one of the many fun Boston sayings you'll hear.
11. "My apartment’s in a wicked good location."
Congrats! But does it have on-site laundry? Because that would be wicked sweet. Wicked is Bostonian for "very" or "really."
12. "We’re out of beer. Let’s go to the packie."
The package store is where alcohol lives, and is one of the things Bostonians say.
13. "Did you remember to buy tonic?"
Some people here call soda tonic.
14. "I’d like a green monster frappe."
Me too! The Green Monster is the name of the leftfield wall in Fenway Park. In 1947, it received a coat of green paint, which is how the structure earned its nickname. This iconic symbol of the Sox is so popular that it has spawned Green-Monster inspired products, such as ice cream. Hood’s version consists of mint ice cream with fudge, but you sometimes see mint mixed with Oreos. A frappe is a milkshake. Out-of-state visitors might want to order one "extra thick" to get the consistency they’re expecting.
15. We’re going down the Cape this weekend. It’ll be wicked pissah/pissa."
No doubt. Trips to Cape Cod are usually amazing.

]]>Let’s start with Boston’s most critical achievements…
1. Boston was the first city in the country to have a chocolate factory. (When it comes to things Boston did first, this has got to be the sweetest!)
We have our priorities. The Baker Chocolate Factory was located in the Lower Mills part of Dorchester, on the Neponset River. It’s since been converted into condos, where you can bet the residents have sweet dreams.
2. In 1950, the first Dunkin’ Donuts shop was established in Quincy.
And so the Dunks addiction began…
3. When it comes to amenities, if it’s public and awesome, Boston was probably the first to have it. Case in point, Revere Beach is "America’s First Public Beach."
4. Boston Common is the first public park in the U.S. – it was established in 1634.
You can only appreciate the effect of the shadows from above!
5. Oh, and the Public Garden is the first botanic garden in the nation.
It actually sits on reclaimed marshland.
6. The first subway in the nation opened in Boston in 1897.
On its first day in use 100,000 people tried it out. Even new amusement park rides can’t compete with that level of enthusiasm!
7. Boston is where the first lighthouse in the U.S. was constructed. It was built on Little Brewster Island, one of the Boston Harbor Islands, in 1716.
While this remains the oldest continuously used lighthouse site, the British damaged the original building at the end of the Revolutionary War. The lighthouse you can see today dates back to 1783.
8. Mount Auburn is the country’s first rural cemetery.
It’s definitely not in a pastoral location anymore; the city has expanded a lot since the cemetery opened in 1831.
9. Harvard, established in 1636, was the first college in the U.S.
It was named after John Harvard, a clergyman from Charlestown, who bequeathed his library and half of his estate to the college.
10. The first successful telephone call was made in Boston on March 10, 1876.
Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson were in different rooms within their Boston lab when Bell spoke into his invention, saying: "Watson, come here. I want to see you." The sound carried successfully, even though the quality wasn’t great. Interestingly, Bell’s mother was deaf and that’s what spurred him to begin experimenting with sound.
11. Ether, a powerful anesthetic, was first demonstrated in Boston. Before this, the substance was best known as a recreational drug.
However, that all changed in 1846, when people congregated at Mass General to watch dentist William Morton use ether to render a patient unconscious prior to a surgery to remove a tumor from the patient’s neck. This development revolutionized the surgical field, making it one of the most important of all Boston firsts. You can still visit the Ether Dome today.
12. The first disposable razor was manufactured in Boston. (We’ll take credit for the smooth shave, but any nicks are on you!)
King Camp Gillette was an impoverished traveling salesman with a knack for inventions. An employer suggested he invent something that could only be used for a limited time, to ensure repeat customers. Gillette decided to create a razor with a removable, double-edged blade. Thus, the Gillette razor was born.
13. The first Polaroid camera was sold in Boston.
Edwin Land, a chemist and physicist who focused on light polarization, established Land-Wheelright Laboratories in Cambridge. While he got the idea for an instant camera in Santa Fe and gave the first public demonstration of his technology in New York, his company – renamed the Polaroid Corporation – was here. The Land camera retailed for $89.95 in 1948 (the equivalent of about $910 today) and was carried by Boston department store, Jordan Marsh.
Thanks to the presence of MIT and Harvard, as well as many other centers of brilliant minds, there is no end to the pioneering developments that continually happen in Boston. ]]>I stayed at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport for a getaway from my never-ending to-do list, and crossing the Evelyn Moakley Bridge felt like crossing into a completely new world. The Seaport district is a part of South Boston that overlooks the Boston Harbor and has absolutely exploded with development in the past few years. I can remember when the area was predominantly parking lots and dive bars, now it’s a shiny new downtown. Though the neighborhood has a bit of a manufactured feel (and a suspicious lack of Dunkin Donuts’) compared to the rest of the city, it’s a dream for a local staycation and a choice landing spot for Boston visitors.
I’m Celina, a Boston-based travel, food, and culture writer. I’m a born-and-raised New Englander who migrated from New Hampshire to Boston, and while I love telling global stories, I’ll always have a soft spot for this lobster-loving part of the United States.
Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport is themed for the arts and culture of the city and does a surprisingly wonderful job of connecting with the hyper-local.
In the lobby, you can spot a gallery wall of photographs taken behind the scenes at Boston theaters and arts organizations. A few yards away is an installation where local artists created sculptures out of Boston-based shoe brands, showcasing New Balance, Sperry, Converse, and others in a completely new way.
At this rate, the Omni Seaport has more in common with the Institute of Contemporary Art down the street (a must-visit by the way) than the corporate towers that line Seaport Boulevard.

There are two towers structurally framing the hotel, and they represent one of the most important choices you have to make for your stay: the Artist Tower and the Patron Tower (see what they did there?) offer two different but equally beneficial experiences.
The Artist Tower houses studio-style rooms perfect for solo travelers or intimate couples. They’re small but chicly appointed. Despite their size, booking one of these rooms comes with perks, like free gym clothes rentals. They’re also more affordable.
The Patron Tower rooms are more typical in size with a writing space, a makeup station, closet storage for garments, and a spacious bathroom in its own space. The Patron Tower also houses the suites, which range in size. Just about every room offers incredible views of Boston.
I stayed in one of the standard Patron Tower guest rooms. It happened to be snowing, and seeing the weather come into the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows was a magical experience. The room was stylishly decorated and well-stocked, featuring a few of my hotel must-haves like an in-room coffee maker and cozy bathrobes.
The views from the room were incredible, but the rooftop heated pool and hot tub were perhaps an even better way to take in the sights.
In the summer, this area of the hotel really pops off. They have a live DJ and it becomes a high-energy, party atmosphere. But even in the early morning on a weekday, soaking in the hot tub was incredibly relaxing.
Pro Tip: the hotel has more than 1,000 rooms and the pool and hot tub are definitely not big enough for everyone. I recommend going at off hours for the best experience. I went at 8 a.m. and had the place to myself for an hour. Is there possibly a better way to start the day?
If the rooftop tub doesn’t quite do the relaxation trick, the next stop is Breve Spa, located in the Omni Seaport, but open to the public.
At the spa, I experienced their Signature Breve Facial — part skincare, part massage — for a dreamy blend of relaxation and fresh-face benefits.
There’s a lot to explore in the greater Seaport neighborhood if you can pry yourself out of your Omni-induced relaxation coma.
The main drag, Seaport Boulevard, houses public art like a brightly colored sculpture series by Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel, a village of local shops, and in the summer, Trillium Beer Garden. For nightlife, consider Flight Club, a bar and restaurant with team darts tournaments, or SPIN where you can test your Ping-Pong skills to the beats of a live DJ.
After a day of relaxing, I headed to the Lifted restaurant — one of six on-site restaurants, if you can believe it — for a taste of Miami right here in Boston.
The light-flooded restaurant offers tropical cocktails like frozen margaritas and dishes ranging from lightly-battered fish tacos to a salted caramel lobster roll. I know it sounds insane, but trust me, it works.
If you’d rather be watching the game than picturing yourself on South Beach, consider trying The Sporting Club for dinner.
Built for screening sports events (Go Sox!), the restaurant features an elevated American menu and the actual floor from a former Celtics training court. This is what I meant when I said the Omni has gotten hyper-local.
My staycation at the Omni Seaport was a divine few days away from my laptop, but it’s perfectly situated to host out-of-town guests as well. And don’t worry; Hahvahd Yahd is still just a T ride away.

3. Swapfest: The Flea at MIT, Cambridge

4. Cambridge Antique Market, Cambridge
The Cambridge Antique Market combines flea market with consignment shop. This flea market is open on weekends and weekdays.
5. The Somerville Flea, Somerville
The Somerville Flea takes place in the middle of Davis Square. It’s held every Sunday from May 31st to October 11th. You can find vintage and antique items that have been reclaimed, restored, and repurposed.

You already knew that, but were you aware that 43.3% of us hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher? The Boston Redevelopment Authority states, there are 35 colleges in Boston, with a combined population of 152,000 students! That’s a lot of late-night pizza.

That's right: this city is heaven for foodies. If you can eat it, there’s a Boston festival in its honor. We celebrate cuisines from around the world, but also from nearer to home – have you been to the Fluff Festival in Somerville?
8. We’re no slouches when it comes to inventing dishes, either.
Boston cream pie and Parker House rolls were first dreamed up at the Parker House Hotel, while Boston baked beans originated in the 1620s when devout Pilgrims and Puritans developed the ultimate hack to allow them to rest on Sunday without going hungry. They made Boston baked beans on Saturday, then used hot bricks to make sure the food remained warm through Sunday!
9. We’re a wonderfully diverse bunch.
It’s common knowledge that many Bostonians have strong British, Irish, and Italian roots, but did you know that 27.3% of us are foreign-born? Consequently, our annual festivals celebrate a huge range of cultures, and restaurants are devoted to every kind of cuisine you can imagine. Moldavian food, anyone? (No, seriously, it’s yummy.)
10. This is a creative and artistic city.
Boston is brimming with cultural treasures, from the Theater District to our vaunted art museums and many galleries.
11. Boston offers world-class healthcare.
If you or a loved one gets sick, you’ll receive excellent care here. Massachusetts earned the number one spot for healthcare access (and came in at number two in healthcare, overall). Many of our state’s top hospitals are in Boston.
12. If you’re into shoes, this is the place for you.
Specifically athletic shoes. Reebok, New Balance, and Converse all have headquarters here.

Park Score (which is like Walk Score but for city parks), stated there is an acre of park for every 127 Boston residents. Almost everyone lives within a ten-minute walk of a green space, with the most popular park being Boston Common – beloved by city dwellers since 1634!
15. T is for Top!
We also win bronze - which sounds more prestigious than third - for our public transit system. (Data from SmartAsset's assessment of 136 cities with a population exceeding 175,000). A full 34% of Boston commuters use public transit as their main way to get to work.
16. The Sox, Pats, Bruins, Celtics. We clearly have the best teams...

You expect to encounter the odd eccentric professor at a prestigious college, but an eccentric building? That's not usually what you would think you'd find, and yet here it is! The Ray and Maria Stata Center seems like the architectural version of a Salvador Dali painting, and it's one of those places you either love or loathe. To me, this Frank Gehry-designed building is wonderfully whimsical and rebellious. Every other building sticks with its normal lines, but this place has an identity all its own. Head to building 32 on the MIT Campus map and form your own opinion!
2. The Mapparium
If you're into weird things to do in Boston, check out the Mapparium. There's nothing like this spot anywhere else, so you'll be sure to have a one-of-a-kind experience when you visit here. Walk into the center of the earth in The Mapparium, a three-story high, stained glass orb that depicts the world as is appeared in 1935. If you ever wondered what it would be like to stand inside a globe, you can find out at this unique attraction. The Mapparium is inside the Mary Baker Eddy Library.
3. All Saints Way
This spot in the North End is essentially one man's private shrine that can be viewed from the street. Peter Baldassari has adorned the alley between 4 and 8 Battery Street with figurines and artwork, all relating to saints. It's quite the sight to behold, and has become a favorite of tourists looking for an interesting experience in Boston.
4. A Duck Tour
We're used to spotting these vehicles trundling past Boston landmarks but, if you stop to think about it, they're pretty weird - and I'm not just referring to the random quacking. A jacked-up vehicle that can transition into a boat is an oddity in a civilian setting. Sure, these amphibious landing vehicles made sense in World War II, but whoever first thought of using them for tourism was a kooky genius. Do yourself a favor and, the next time you have out-of-town guests, hop on board with them. Tours through the Boston Duck Tours run from several different locations throughout the city. You can't go wrong with any of them!
5. The Old Bear Cages
Ducks aren't the only quirky creatures in Boston. If you happen to walk - or get turned around - in Long Crouch Woods, you may stumble upon abandoned bear dens. The bears used to be part of Franklin Park Zoo and, after the attraction closed, the cages were left behind. It's weird but awesome that the bears had such ornate stonework to appreciate, but the rusted bars and remote-feeling setting make this spot a little creepy, too. If you like some mystery in your travels, this site is something you will definitely enjoy. You'll find The Old Bear Cages inside Franklin Park, a little ways off Seaver Street.
6. The Skinny House
Welcome to Boston's very own spite house. The Skinny House is what happens when one sibling betrays the other - and vice versa. According to the story, two brothers inherited their father's land. While one son was serving in the Civil War, his brother constructed a home on almost the whole lot. When the other son returned from the war, he was furious and built this tiny house in order to block light from his sibling's home. This spot is one of the most fun weird Boston attractions. The Skinny House is a classic Boston sight.
7. The Warren Anatomical Museum
This museum is known for medical oddities, including one skull in particular. Phineas Gage was a railroad employee who lived through an accident during which an iron rod went right through his head. His case study provided doctors with new information about how the human brain works and you can see his skull inside The Warren Anatomical Museum. If you like the slightly spooky or creepy, make your way to this museum!
8. Giant Baby Heads at the MFA
Speaking of skulls, the baby heads at the Museum of Fine Arts can certainly catch visitors off guard. Don't worry, there are no actual skulls here! The Giant Baby Heads are unique sculptures that you certainly won't forget anytime soon. These sculptures are around eight feet high, weigh 1.6 tons, and give the appearance that infants are sprouting from the ground. Now there is an interesting sight! Spanish sculptor Antonio Lopez Garcia crafted the works, which many consider innocent and playful. If you are an art lover, be sure you stop by and check out these cool works.
9. The Museum
What has to be the tiniest museum on the planet can be found in Somerville, a city with the second-highest number of artists per capita in the whole nation! This teeny museum features local art, and one of its goals is to make art accessible for all. When you visit, you will see that they are quite successful in their efforts. You won't find art like this is other museums, as all of the artists are located nearby. You'll find the Tiny Museum in Somerville.

]]>1. There’s a reason #BOSNOW is a hashtag.
Well, actually two reasons. The first is that some years we receive a ridiculous amount of snow. The second is that we love to discuss the weather (or complain about it) either in person or via social media.

2. Winter here is like an unsupervised toddler...
...It does whatever the heck it wants, when it wants, and leaves a big mess behind. In Boston, winter can kick in anytime from November onwards and it may well snow through April. We've learned to expect the unexpected during winters in Boston.
3. Daylight is a weekend luxury.
It's dark when you get up, and it's dark when you emerge from work or school at the end of the day. For most of December, the sunset is usually a few minutes before or after 4:15 p.m. That kind of darkness means just one thing: A Boston winter is heaven for night owls.
Don't worry if you prefer daylight. By the end of January, the sun usually begins setting a little later and, by then, we're so much closer to the warm days of spring.

4. Winter can be a lot better…
C'mon. Is there anything better than a beautifully sunny day in the dead of winter in Boston? There's just something about the shine of that winter sun.
...or a lot worse than you’re expecting.
Some years we're lucky and scrape by with just a few snowfalls. Others? Well...we still talk about them to this day.
5. Even if you like snow, slush is the worst.
Messy, cold, and gross. Ugh. And it looks pretty blah, too, doesn't it? Just one of the downsides of winter in Boston, Massachusetts.
6. Bostonians are really tough.
If we let the weather hold us back, we'd never accomplish anything. We don't let a little snow, ice, and cold stop us from whatever we have planned.
7. When your car is buried, freeing it takes a lot of work, but don't forget to clean off the roof.
Otherwise it poses a hazard for you and other drivers. It might take some extra time, but it could save the lives of others on the road.
8. Be careful when shoveling.
Shoveling burns a ton of calories, which is great if you've got a giant mug of cocoa topped with marshmallowy goodness waiting for your inside. However, the effort of shoveling can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2015, there were 158,000 people who sought medical help for snow shoveling injuries.
9. Don’t move a space saver, no matter how bizarre it may be!
The Space Saver Wars have begun again. Grab a chair, or use your vacuum. Just don't let all of that hard work go to waste. It's totally legal to claim the space you shoveled out in the first 48 hours after a snow emergency. Well, unless you're in the South End, where they're now banned.
10. A winter wind whipping down the street will take your breath away.
It cuts right through clothing to your bones. Dress in layers before heading outside.
11. Winter is much more manageable if you embrace seasonal activities.
Go ice skating, view some Christmas lights, or bundle up and go for a stroll. Don't worry if you prefer staying indoors on those brutal winter days in Boston. You have plenty to do indoors, too.
12. Boston looks unbelievably pretty in winter.
Fortunately, our smartphones come equipped with some pretty fancy cameras because we need them during a Boston winter. There are so many gorgeous scenes just waiting to be photographed.
