Once you’ve called Boston home, it’s hard to live anywhere else. Even if you’re lured away by promises of year-round sunshine, you’ll find yourself thinking fondly and wistfully of The Hub. While we all have specific people and places that make us feel sentimental, there are also some shared things that many people miss when they leave Boston. Here are 14 of them:
1. Dunks – you can navigate your way through Boston by following a trail of Dunkin’ Donuts locations.
If you’ve moved, then your morning probably sucks... unless you’re somewhere like Rhode Island or Connecticut because, to the rest of the world, Dunks is just another chain. Sacrilege.
2. Clams… everywhere.
Fried, in chowder, on pizza - life here is simply clam-tastic. In case your dictionary isn’t fluent in Bostonian, that is a legit adjective.
3. Familiar slang.
Moving means constantly translating your slang. If you ask for directions to a package store in another state, you’ll probably wind up at UPS or – worse – the post office. Nobody’s happy with an outcome that involves unwanted sobriety and long lines.
4. Logan Airport.
You might not be grateful for the airport while driving in circles trying to find the right terminal, but direct flights to many desirable destinations sure are convenient.
5. Boston’s location.
In fact, as a city, Boston is extremely well-positioned. It’s a short journey to the countryside, farm stands, adorable villages, and The Cape. We're also within easy traveling distance of five other states as well as Canada.
6. Public transportation.
You don’t even have to drive if you don’t want to. While Boston’s public transportation system has its challenging days, we’re connected to so many places via the MBTA and Amtrak. There are U.S. cities that barely even have a bus system.
7. Walkability.
Boston earns its rep as "America’s Walking City."
8. A varied landscape.
No need to choose between the conveniences of urban living and the relaxation that comes with time spent at the beach. We have both.
9. These skyline views.
Wow!
10. Unique architecture.
Pick an architectural style from post-Medieval onwards and there’s probably an example of it in Boston. Whether you favor Second Empire rowhouses or Mid-century Modernism, we’ve got it covered.
11. History.
Boston’s history is our nation’s history.
12. Culture.
Live music, high-quality theater productions, and museums abound. In fact, there are museums for stuff you’ve never even heard – who fancies a trip to the Harvard Herbaria?
13. Education.
Whether you’re a student or the parent or grandparent of a student, Boston is THE place to acquire an education.
14. Winning teams.
Once you leave Boston, you’ll be surrounded by a sea of fans from opposing teams, so the win won’t be as sweet – plus you’ll miss Wally.
