Believe it or not, Ohio is home to an impressive number of haunted houses. Year after year, the Buckeye State is frequently ranked as one of the best places to spend Halloween. From Cleveland to Cincinnati, there’s just no shortage of haunted attractions in Ohio! However, if you live in the northern half of the state, there’s one spooky site that you have to keep on your radar. There’s no attraction anywhere else in the world like this unique haunted house near Cleveland, and it is well worth a little road trip to experience. Put on a brave face and prepare to face your worst nightmare… it’s come to life at the Haunted Hydro experience in Fremont, Ohio.
You've just stumbled upon one of the coolest haunted attractions in Ohio, and it's located just about an hour and a half away from home.
Welcome to Fremont, Ohio. This community is charming by day, and it's the beautiful county seat of Sandusky County. This was the birthplace of Rutherford B. Hayes, and it is also the home of one of the most unique haunted houses in America.
This is Haunted Hydro, an authentic hydroelectric power plant built in 1911.
This is the only place in the world where you can experience a good old-fashioned jump scare inside a hydroelectric power plant. The spook factor begins as soon as you arrive and behold the massive 44-foot tall walls. This destination is intimidating, but just wait until you step inside the gates.

Once spooky season rolls around, things get creepy here.
Circa four acres of haunted attractions await you. Visitors can explore Fog Harbor, the outdoor trail, or wander around inside the old power plant. If you're brave enough, check out the Wasteland... legend says toxic waste has turned this place into a noxious playground.
Please note that due to the age of the old power plant, it's not accessible for wheelchair users. However, many attractions including the Midway and Fright Haven areas are accessible and tons of fun!

In this training day photo, we're shown that the environment isn't necessarily more comforting when bathed in light. The building itself is spooky, but with low lights and the addition of props... yikes. It doesn't take the Scooby Gang to figure out that this space is heebies jeebies-worthy.
This annual attraction opens in late September and operates on Friday and Saturday nights in October, plus the last two Sundays of the month and Halloween.
There's no better way to celebrate Halloween than with a trip to this unique Ohio attraction! There's nothing like it. And while some haunted houses are a bit campy, this one has the potential to terrify you.
Rest assured, the monsters inside this spooky attraction won't touch you... unless you want them.
If you're an extreme thrill seeker, buy an Extreme Pass Upgrade when you purchase your tickets. This will earn you a special t-shirt that lets the actors know that you don't scare easily. Expect to get spattered with blood and mysterious liquids, don't be surprised if you're separated from the group, and keep calm if the monsters grab you. It's all part of the act!
You can also select a Fast Pass or Front of the Line Pass if you're hoping to save a bit of time.
And there's even a special event where friendlier monsters come out to entertain the little horror fans. After all, this experience is not recommended for children under 13, and the event is not suitable for younger children (especially little ones that need to be held). Check their calendar for Friendly Monster Day if you're planning to take the little ones... admission prices are lowered, and parents get in for free!

The experience is spread out across a vast space, so budget a bit of time for your visit. You could spend at least 20 to 30 minutes walking around!
While the event does get busy, you won't have to worry about massive crowds. Tickets are offered for specific time slots to control foot traffic, so you won't have to fear big crowds. However, wear comfortable footwear and clothes you don't mind getting dirty... that part you will want to prepare for.
