There’s a moment at the end of every summer where things start to feel crisper, slower, and even a bit surreal. This is because, believe it or not, the recognized “first day” of a season is its astrological start, but the meteorological start of a season is based on our 12-month calendar — March 1 for spring, June 1 for summer, September 1 for autumn, and December 1 for winter. This means that each season, there are about 20 days where some people may define the season as summer, for example, while others define it as fall. It’s in that sweet spot that some of the best late summer/early fall activities can be enjoyed, like going to an adorable and quaint sunflower field near Cleveland. To our fortune, there’s one sunflower field in Medina that fits the bill of quaint and adorable, and it’s an easy, breezy drive from The Land. Take a look:
In 2021, a brand new sunflower field opened in the Medina area and became an instant hit.
This paradise is hidden on Beach Road, a winding country road in the rural region between Medina and Wadsworth. Here, family farms hide just paces away from Route 18... but you'd never guess if you stuck to the busy state route! (Pro tip: if you want to avoid the traffic on Route 18 like I do, both Granger and Ridgewood run nearly parallel to the state route between Medina and Fairlawn.)
The owner of Medina Sunflower Farm had a simple concept in mind: plant some sunflowers, start a Facebook page, and let excitement bloom throughout the community.
This property used to be a horse farm, so the soil is especially fertile, if you can imagine why. The property owner always liked sunflower fields, so it seemed like a natural solution for his property. When his first batch of 300,000 sunflowers bloomed, he put up a Facebook page and watched in wonder as the internet worked its magic. Just like in "Field of Dreams," the mantra of "build it and they will come" rang true.

Since then, this field has become an annual tradition for in-the-know Clevelanders... and it's plain to see why!
With hundreds of thousands of sunflowers stretching pretty much as far as the eye can see, it's easy to get lost in the serenity of this sea of yellow. Beautiful, dainty, and somehow sturdy, there's something entrancing about sunflowers.
While the farm is cash-only, it's a great way to experience the blooms without breaking the bank.
Admission is just $5, and flowers are offered at a cost of four for $5... with the exception of special promos. The "fill a bucket" offers are an especially big hit, as it offers an affordable way to take home oodles of sunflowers!
As the blooms are seasonal, it's hard to predict their operating season. Connect with Medina Sunflower Farm on Facebook and peek at their recent posts for the most up-to-date hours of operation and seasonal specials.
And if you're wondering, yes, this spot is dog friendly! Unfortunately, due to insurance restrictions, certain breeds and behavioral tendencies are not permitted, so be sure to check their Facebook page for guidelines if you're planning on bringing your pup.
Photography is both permitted and encouraged, so don't be afraid of spending some extra time in the field.
Hobbyists and professionals alike love this field. The sunflowers aren't too tall, so they're easy to wade through and pose with. Remember that some people have a mild skin reaction to fuzzy plants, so opt to wear clothing that covers your legs if you want to wade in.
And if you come later in the season... well, bring some extra cash!
The sunflower season is somewhat short and unpredictable, but pumpkins sometimes pop up at the farm in the final few weeks. It's good to have some extra cash, just in case... and if there aren't pumpkins, you can always grab some extra sunflowers to take home!

Fall starts early at this farm, and you truly can't beat the experience.
It may still be summer in Greater Cleveland when the field is abloom, but the autumnal atmosphere of the place is hard to beat. Plus, since it's a bit off the beaten path, it's less busy than comparable autumn activities closer to Cleveland.
With a quaint setting in the Medina countryside and stunning views, it's no wonder locals have fallen in love.
This spot is so worth the trip from Cleveland! Be sure to follow Medina Sunflower Farm on Facebook and message them if you have any questions. Even if you don't swing by the farm this year, it's something you'll want to keep on your radar for next season!
