There’s nothing quite like embracing the splendor of the great outdoors, especially on a balmy summer day. In fact, the entirety of the summer season in Northeast Ohio is perfect for camping. While the entirety of the region is spotted with family-friendly campgrounds, parks are also a lovely option for unplugging, exploring, and roughing it like a true wilderness expert. But these parks offer more than just tent sites, especially if you’re looking in the Lake Metroparks. Out in Madison, Ohio, there's a landscape that's downright magical to explore.

This stunning view of the Grand River is hidden in Hogback Ridge Park, part of the Lake Metroparks. It's just under an hour away from Cleveland, but it's worlds away from the busy city streets we know and love. In fact, there's been very little human impact here over the years.
The park is part of Grand River Reservation, so most visitors come looking for the water-fueled wonders this park has to offer.

I don't blame them one bit! There are more than 70 species of fish in the Grand River, and its proximity to Lake Erie makes it a wondrous place to explore. However, there's something else worth checking out here... the abundance of native wildflowers! Just peep those June Wildflowers in Ohio. The park, which is stunning all year long, also has an on-site cabin that you can cozy up in.
Lake Metroparks
The Strong Cabin in the Lake Metroparks is a dreamy place to steal away for a few days. There are two bedrooms here with two bunk beds in each, enabling you and the family to have your own base of operations as you explore the surrounding park.
On those rare cooler nights, the indoor fireplace makes it easy to unwind.

Bring your own linens and towels, as this spot is fairly bare-bones and rustic. While there's a kitchen and restroom, there's also only minimal cooking equipment and no bathing facilities. Come prepared to get rustic... truly, you won't regret it!
While nights are best spent stargazing by the cabin or telling stories inside, day offers the perfect opportunity to get out and explore.

The abundant native meadows here are a natural wonderland that's worth exploring. (Just watch out for the Common Teasel... those plants are sharp!) All throughout the summer months, these grassy fields display a variety of beautiful flowers.

See the white flowers in the foreground of the picture? Those are Queen Anne's Lace. When I was a Girl Scout growing up in Northeast Ohio, I learned to look for the little drop of red in the center of these flowers. Legend has it that Queen Anne was an expert lace maker, though she once pricked herself with a needle and lost a single drop of blood. It stained the lace's center... and also the center of the flower that bears her name.
If you're lucky enough to come in the spring months, you'll find an even greater abundance of blooms.

Beyond the meadow and in the depths of the forest, rarities like bluebells and trillium grow on the wooded forest floor. Other fascinating plants can be found here in the spring months, including fiddlehead ferns.
Of course, summer flowers bloom from June to August and last into September on good years, so there's plenty of time to see the blooms in this park.

If you visit in the late summer or early fall, you might even be luck enough to witness the annual monarch migration here. Each September, butterflies begin moving from Canada and the Northern United States down toward Mexico for the winter, and they pass along the verdant forests of Lake Erie's shore before heading south. Local forests are absolutely rich with their orange-hued wings, and you might be lucky enough to visit this park during that special time.
But whether you visit on a beautiful sunny day or a rainy one, you can rest assured that you're in for a stunning view.

Hogback Ridge Park is endlessly beautiful, and it has entranced visitors since the 1800s. There used to be a mill here, fueled by the waters of the mighty Grand River, that kept local industry operating at its peak. It's amazing to consider that locals kept this land protected so we can enjoy it all these years later!
And as you explore the park, you can't go wrong with a stay in Strong Cabin.
