]]>We love our food here – especially our zest for spice – and aren’t ashamed that if it’s not fried, spicy, salty, or gooey, it’s probably not on our favorite foodie lists. Here are 14 iconic foods and drinks that promise to leave even the most discriminating North Texan satisfied:
1. Chile con queso and chips (with a side of salsa, of course)
It's a popular appetizer and bar food, and North Texans love it if it's done right! Light, crispy chips are a requirement to make this appetizer a favorite!
2. Tex-Mex
We could go on and on, but Tex-Mex would undoubtedly be the designated food of choice, even if we had to just name one. After all, Tex-Mex is said to have been invented right here in Dallas!
3. Frito Pie
Frito Pie also originated in Dallas. It's an easy-to-make favorite: take your tastiest Texas chili recipe and place it on top of Fritos chips. Add cheese, onions, jalapeños, and/or pickles and you have a filling... and delightfully crunchy... meal.
4. Chicken-fried steak and fried okra
Texas created this Southern favorite, and it's so good that there is an official day dedicated to the delicious entrée. It's best when served with peppered cream gravy and a side of Southern-fried okra. Pure bliss!
5. Pecan pie
The pecan tree was adopted as the official state tree of Texas in 1919. Our official nut? Pecan, of course. So it's not hard to see why we make the best pecan ever from our local produce.
6. Pecan pralines
We also love our pecan pralines, which are sold at most Tex-Mex restaurants and are made as a holiday favorite in many households.
7. Fletcher's Corny Dog
Did you know that these batter-covered, deep-fried creations were initially made just for Texans? Yep! Now, it's practically illegal to go to the State Fair of Texas and NOT have a Fletcher's Corny Dog. They even have a jalapeño version as well as the best-selling classic. It comes with all the mustard you can eat!
8. Frozen margarita
It's no surprise that the frozen margarita machine was created in Dallas; it's the perfect complement to all of the tasty Tex-Mex options around here.
9. Fajita meat served any which way
Fajita meat, which is made from beef skirt, originated from Spanish ranch hands from Texas. We all love classic fajitas (served skillet-style with vegetables and heaped on a flour tortilla), but we have become quite inventive with the tasty meat, serving them on nachos, quesadillas, and tacos.
10. Fried food
Whether it's fried butter, fried beer, fried Twinkies, or even fried hamburgers, the State Fair of Texas has it all. We love to see the creative new fried-food winners every year from the coveted Big Tex Food Awards.
11. Dr. Pepper float (made with Blue Bell, of course)
This duo is unbeatable. Take Texas' Blue-Bell vanilla ice cream and pair it with Waco-based Dr. Pepper. It is drink/dessert nirvana!
12. Chimichanga
Stories tell that the chimichanga was an accident waiting to happen: a cook accidentally dropped a burrito into a deep-fat fryer... from there, a food favorite was born!
13. Stuffed jalapeños
Could a cheese-stuffed hot jalapeño wrapped in bacon be any more Texan?
14. Barbecue and Texas T-bones
There's just too much savory meat goodness in the Metroplex to list them all separately. Not only do we grill the best Texas T-bones, but our slow-cooked brisket, pork, and chicken are drool-worthy, too!

]]>1. Jack Kilby, an engineer at Dallas-based Texas Instruments, invented the first microchip in 1958.
This first integrated circuit reduced the amount of space taken up by electronic components and advanced circuits. These microchips could then be manufactured using an automated process and allowed for electronic devices that were more powerful and sophisticated than ever before.
2. Kilby also led a group in 1967 to invent the first handheld calculator.
It's no surprise that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000.
3. German chocolate cake was not invented in Germany.
Mrs. George Clay, a Dallas homemaker, submitted her recipe for "German's Chocolate Cake" to the Dallas Morning News in 1957. After it won "recipe of the day," it was widely distributed and became quite popular for utilizing the Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate created in 1852.
4. Dallas' Woodrow Wilson High School has some serious alumni athlete and musician bragging rights.
It is the only public high school in America to be the alma mater of two Heisman Trophy winners: quarterback Davey O’Brien, who won in 1938, and wide receiver Tim Brown, who won in 1987. Guitarist Steve Miller, leader of the Steve Miller Band, and ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill are also from here.
5. A Dallas resident is responsible for coining the phrase, "Super Bowl."
Sports mogul and longtime Dallas resident Lamar Hunt originated the term in a 1966 letter to commissioner Pete Rozelle, in which Hunt wrote, "I have kiddingly called it the 'Super Bowl,' which obviously can be improved upon." Obviously, he got it right!
6. The world’s first frozen margarita machine was invented in Dallas in 1971.
Restaurateur Mariano Martinez used a soft serve ice cream machine for his new, delicious creation.
7. The first ever drive-through bank window was opened in Dallas in 1938.
Hillcrest State Bank in Dallas certainly had customer convenience on its mind!
8. Dallas is the home of the original Tex-Mex cuisine.
When Mike Martinez opened a small restaurant in Big D in 1916, he began infusing his food to integrate Mexican flare into it. In 1918, he changed the name to El Fenix.
9. The Texas Star Ferris Wheel was the tallest in America... until Las Vegas' High Roller opened in 2016.
Texas Star, which opened in 1985, may now be the second tallest, but it is still the biggest draw at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas every year.
10. Dallas' Henry S. Garrett invented the automatic control of traffic lights in 1923.
It was the first system in this country and, perhaps, the world. He also was the first to make such control "selective," meaning allowances could be made for emergency vehicles.
11. The concept of a convenience store got its start here in Dallas.
In 1927, a Southland Ice Company employee began selling milk, eggs, and bread for convenience to customers. His business would later become known as 7-Eleven, which currently has more than 50,000 locations, making it the largest chain in the world.
12. The first landing of a supersonic Concorde in the United States was at the DFW Airport.
The Air France aircraft landing was a part of the airport's dedication ceremony there in 1973.
13. Dr. Pepper was created in Waco in the 1880s.
The tasty, carbonated soda remains a favorite choice of Texans today.

With a population of around 1,341, the town's motto is "Where Everybody is Somebody!" Hico (pronounced High-co) maintains that outlaw Billy the Kid lived out his last years of life here. They even have a museum. Check it out and decide for yourself.
2. West
Countless Texans travel through West daily, as interstate 35 goes right through the town. It is conveniently located between DFW and destinations such as Austin and Houston. It's the epic kolaches that make people stop and visit West and its population of under 3,000.
The Czech Stop in West draws lines of people daily who wait sometimes for hours to take home (or eat on the spot) legendary kolaches from the all-in-one deli/bakery and convenience store.
3. Ennis
Ennis embodies a hometown feel and is known across the state for its bluebonnet fields and beautiful countryside. Ennis loves festivals and hosts the National Polka Festival every Memorial Day weekend. Its population is around 18,000.
4. Pilot Point
With a population of just over 4,000, Pilot Point claims movie star fame. This former bank (now an antique store) was used in the 1967 movie Bonnie & Clyde.
The area is best known, however, for the gentle rolling hills, nearby state parks, and Lake Ray Roberts.
5. Thurber
While Thurber today is a modern-day ghost town with less than 48 residents, over 10,000 folks once called this town home. Between 1888 and 1921 this town located about 70 miles west of Fort Worth was one of the largest producers of coal in Texas. Abandoned coal miner homes and turn-of-the-century smokestacks still stand. This photo is of the historic St. Barbara's Catholic Church.
6. Glen Rose
Glen Rose has a population of about 2,500, and while the drive through the city and its stone-structure courthouse and town square are impressive, the mention of "dinosaurs" has made them a favorite spot with tourists.
Dinosaur Valley State Park and Dinosaur World draw tourists to Glen Rose from all over the world here every year.
7. Walnut Springs
Walnut Springs has a population of about 823, but its small size doesn't equate to any shortage of fun.
An annual highlight in town is the Rattlesnake Roundup and Snake Dance.
8. Granbury
Granbury is a perfect day-trip getaway from DFW. With a population of around 8,000, it features a town square, outstanding shopping, festivals, and special events almost every weekend. Lake Granbury beckons guests with its great fishing and boating.
9. Van Alstyne
Fall der All is just one of the festivals that bring out the town in Van Alstyne. It is located about 45 miles north of Dallas and has a population of about 3,000 and growing.
10. Justin
Justin has a population of about 3,246, and locals hope to keep it that way. However, with its close proximity to Texas Motor Speedway, growth is inevitable.
While Justin Boots headquarters is actually in Fort Worth, there is a large outlet store here. While people think that the town is named after the bootmaker, it’s really just coincidence that Justin is home to many stores that feature Western wear.
11. Iredell
Iredell (pronounced "Ire-dell") may be small in size but it's big on heart. It has a current population of about 339. Fishing on the Bosque River, hunting, and all things outdoors are popular with residents. Many businesses are closed on the formerly busy main streets but locals are hopeful about future growth.
12. Little Elm
Located on the shores of Lake Lewisville, the town of Little Elm features the largest beach area in North Texas. The town has experienced exponential growth because its location is only 35 miles outside of downtown Dallas. The 2000 census had the population at 3,646. It is now over 25,000.
13. Denison
Denison is a happening city with a robust historic downtown area. The 30-block area has been officially designated a Texas Main Street City by the Texas Historical Society.
Denison also just happens to be the birthplace of our nation's 34th president, Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower. Its population has grown to about 22,000.
14. Waxahachie
Waxahachie is perhaps best known for its beautiful historic buildings and a breathtaking gothic-style courthouse.
The town also has a claim to fame as the self-described "crepe myrtle capital" and pays homage to the blooming tree there with a large festival every summer. It also hosts the annual Scarborough Faire. About 30,000 residents call Waxahachie (pronounced "walks-uh-hatchie") home.
15. Weatherford
Weatherford may have passed the small-town status, but its quaint charm and small-town roots make it the perfect day trip. Weatherford locals are known for going all out for the holidays and welcoming visitors like they are kin. Weatherford's current population is about 25,250.

Pretty much anything you need for your car is sold here at a discounted rate.
Shows and special events are held most weekends, such as this Native American Pow Wow.

Traders Village goes all out with rides for all ages.
Spending the day shopping, eating, and being entertained makes for a great weekend activity!

]]>More than 7,000 vendor spaces are set up in the 450-acre First Monday Park each month.
Canton trade days are held Thursday through Sunday prior to the first Monday of the month, year round.
Bring your own cart because you'll most certainly be hauling away some new finds here.
You never know what you will see here.
While some vendors are faithfully there each month, many just come and go as they have wares to sell.
Feel free to haggle here. There's always a deal to be had.
In addition to the outdoor areas, there are pavilions and indoor areas to shop as well.
The flea market also has several vendors sporting colorful goods from Mexico.
Canton plays host to numerous antique stores as well as furniture shops.
Newcomers should note these venues when planning their shopping trip: Original First Monday Park, Original Pavilions and Arbors, The Village, Old Mill Marketplace, The Mountain, Canton Marketplace, and Canton Trade Center Pavilion. This list is not exhaustive but covers the major areas.
There are numerous food trucks and eateries throughout Canton.
Inexpensive lodging is available here as well, although you might want to book ahead, as rooms do fill up on First Monday events.
The East Gate Entrance is located at 361 S. Trade Days Blvd., Canton, 75103. Free parking is plentiful, and scooter rentals are also available. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes!

The tasting room here is Texas-themed and inviting. Performances and special events are held throughout the year and many sell out quickly, so be sure to stay up to date with their events calendar and reserve a spot early.
Covered outdoor areas and space heaters don't stop wine lovers from enjoying tastings, regardless of the Texas weather! You can find Lost Oak Winery at 8101 County Road 802 in Burleson.

times ten cellars features wines from Cathedral Mountain Vineyard, which grow their grapes in the high desert mountains 18 miles south of Alpine, Texas. The bulk of the vines are Tempranillo and Syrah, with some Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Mourvédre for blending.
5. Sunset Winery - Burleson
Located in a home-turned-winery, Sunset Winery offers high quality wines, a broad selection, unique events, and extensive wine education and tours throughout the year.
The Texas wine bar offers plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with beautiful Texas views! Sunset Winery is located at 1535 S. Burleson Blvd. in Burleson.
6. Cross Timbers Winery - Grapevine
This quaint wine tasting venue is set inside a historic home built in 1874.
In addition to indoor and outdoor areas, an old barn on site has been reconstructed and now is home to special events. Cross Timbers is located at 805 N Main St. in Grapevine, TX.
7. Messina Hof - Grapevine
This location is Messina Hof’s first urban winery. Being on Main St. allows the winery to be in the midst of city celebrations held here throughout the year.
This winery near Dallas features multiple tasting areas with 40 different wines, tastings and premium flights, wine on tap by the glass or growler, gourmet food items & accessories, and multiple event spaces. Their address is 201 S Main St. in Grapevine.

]]>If you arrived here by looking up something like waterfalls near Dallas, you’re sure to find at least a few, considering how enormous Texas is! Check these amazing cascades out and let us know which ones are your favorites:
1. Airfield Falls - Fort Worth
The trailhead to the city's only natural waterfall opened in spring 2017. The easiest way to access the waterfall is from Pumphrey Drive off 183. Turn onto Pumphrey Road from either White Settlement Road or Alta Mere Road and head toward the Carswell Front Gate. The trailhead parking lot is on the right. This is one of our favorite places to go hiking in Dallas.
2. Prairie Creek Park - Richardson
This tucked-away neighborhood park and waterfall gives visitors a welcome respite from city life, and it's one of our favorite Dallas parks with a waterfall.
3. Hidden Falls at Marion Sansom Park - Lake Worth
This little-known waterfall is located right below Lake Worth Dam. While you're here, embark upon the wonderful Speakeasy Loop Trail, which is one of our favorite hikes.
4. Anderson Creek Waterfall - Glen Rose
It takes about an hour to get here from Fort Worth, but it's worth it! This 25-foot seasonal waterfall in Glen Rose is the result of overflow from the Paluxy River, and it's nothing short of impressive! Find the waterfall via the creek access off Moody Lane. Glen Rose also makes for an amazing fall day trip near Dallas!
5. Botanic Garden - Fort Worth
The Botanic Garden here is the oldest in Texas, and both entry and parking are free. Return to nature by admiring the flowers and landscape, as well as the various waterfalls inside this 109-acre living museum. These falls are located just outside of the Japanese Gardens and within the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.
6. Lakeside Park - Highland Park
This peaceful and scenery-filled park has a seasonal waterfall, Mother Nature permitting. You can find it at Lakeside Dr. and Armstrong Ave in Highland Park! This is one of the best hidden gems in Dallas for families.
7. Spillway Bridge - White Rock Lake, Dallas
The spillway is beautiful, especially after times of heavier rains. You'll find it just off of Highway 78 and Winsted Drive. Oh, and White Rock Lake might be one of the most haunted places in Dallas!
8. Pioneer Plaza - Dallas
It may not be a natural waterfall, but this little waterfall in downtown Dallas still makes for beautiful photographs and a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Funny enough, Pioneer Plaza is one of those tourist traps in Dallas that's actually worth it!

]]>Dallas and Fort Worth may be sister cities located within 35 miles of one another, but don’t make the mistake that they are the same. These two anchors and surrounding cities and towns form the fourth most populated area in the country. However, a quick trip down one of the interstates connecting the east and west ends of the mighty Metroplex shows how very different the areas are. Ever wonder about the difference between Dallas and Fort Worth? Here are 19 undeniable differences between the two in terms of history, personality, culture, and even lifestyle:
1. Both cities were established near the banks of the Trinity River, but the differences end there.
Dallas, to the east, ranks as the ninth in the U.S. with a population of over 1.3 million. Fort Worth, to the west, is ranked as the 16th largest, and it's the fastest-growing city in the nation, with a population reaching nearly 900,000. The Trinity River is both beautiful and dangerous, as demonstrated during the Great Flood of 1949.
2. Dallas thrived as a railroad town and quickly developed a "big city" feel.
An early claim to fame is the ongoing State Fair of Texas first held in the late 1800s. Today it is the largest and longest-running fair in America. Dallas was formally established in 1841 and became a business and trading center. It was booming by the end of the 1800s and the early 1900s.
3. Fort Worth was a rough-and-rowdy Cowtown.
Fort Worth was established in 1849 as an Army outpost by the Trinity River. Its growth was attributable to its stop on the Chisholm Trail. It became a bawdy, gunslinger sort of Western town, with a legendary Hell's Half Acre. It became the center of cattle drives, and later, the ranching industry, earning it the nickname, "Cowtown." Fort Worth became the host of successful stock shows and exhibitions, and, of course, rodeos. The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is its hallmark event and is still held every January/February.
4. Dallas had to work hard to live down its "City of Hate" image following the John F. Kennedy Presidential assassination in 1963 and with periods of civil unrest.
Dealey Plaza, where John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963, is still the top tourist attraction in the city today. Tourists flock to landmarks from that tragic event. This theater is in Oak Cliff, which is where assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested.
5. Fort Worth has had to work hard to build up its image as being more than just a Western town.
Although locals and city officials are still proud of Fort Worth's moniker of "Where the West Begins."
6. Dallas has a more expansive and impressive skyline.
The city has a big ball in the sky that features nightly LED light shows, for example. The newest addition is the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, a spectacular bridge that crosses the Trinity River.
7. Fort Worth's skyline is smaller, but the buildings light up to form a beautiful evening silhouette.
Its downtown Main Street and Sundance areas are beautiful, lively, clean, and safe. It's one of our favorite main streets in Texas.
8. Dallas is known for its fashion, sophisticated bars and club scenes, and its urban feel.
It is considered more progressive and open-minded. It's an excellent place for artists and creatives.
9. Fort Worth has a more casual feel, with a come-as-you-are friendliness vibe.
Residents, in general, are more apt to be a bit more traditional and old-fashioned than those living in Dallas.
10. Dallas loves its eclectic artsy feel.
If you've never been to Deep Ellum, you've never truly lived. While you're there, you definitely want to check out Truth and Alibi, a truly unique restaurant in Dallas that doubles as a speakeasy.
11. Fort Worth embraces the classics.
The internationally-renowned Kimbell Art Museum is in the Cultural Arts District of Fort Worth, but don't be misled - both cities embrace and surround themselves with art of all kinds through countless caliber museums and arts festivals. By the way, the Kimball Art Museum is one of the best museums in Dallas that you need to add to your bucket list ASAP.

13. ...while Fort Worth has had to stir things up to generate excitement.
The city was once called "Panther City" because, in 1873, a local said things were so quiet there that there was a panther asleep on Main Street. Whether this is actually true or not... well, we doubt it... but it's fun to think about.
14. Dallas is one of the fastest-growing cities for millionaires.
Dallas has more than 115,000 millionaires, largely due to the oil and technology industries. Dallas alone is home to numerous high-earning neighborhoods - some of the highest-earning folks call the city home.
15. Fort Worth's established neighborhoods are full of charm.
Make no mistake, there are plenty of mansions spread across Fort Worth as well.
16. Dallas has renowned culinary restaurants known for their food as well as their expensive prices.
The Mansion Restaurant at Turtle Creek (shown here) is just one example.
17. Fort Worth beckons with friendly and affordable options.
Tasty restaurants abound there too, but locals flock to Tex-Mex, barbecue, and Southern homestyle options. While you're here, be sure to check out some of the most unique restaurants in Fort Worth.

City leaders showed great wisdom in building the Dallas – Fort Worth International Airport in the Irving area, which is centrally located between the two cities. Also, The Dallas Cowboys Stadium and Texas Rangers Ball Park are in a more neutral spot in Arlington. While each city has distinctly different personalities and goals, locals agree that there’s nothing better than living in the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex!

]]>Cold weather typically comes late in the season, but not during the winter of 1977-1978.
While the meteorological winter season runs from December through February, most wintry precipitation around here occurs from January to March rather than during the earlier months of winter. Leaves may not even turn until November. When wintry weather arrives early, it catches all of us by surprise.
These cacti were certainly caught off guard by a surprising ice storm.
It's not an everyday sight, cacti frozen over... but we had that here, if only for a little while.
In the winter of 1977-1978, the area's average temperature was 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
This makes it the coldest winter on record in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. We hope it stays the coldest on record - no colder than that for us, please. Thanks.
Additionally, there were 62 reported freezes - also a winter record.
When a wintry mix - more commonly called an ice storm - strikes the area, everything shuts down.
This is because there is not enough equipment and supplies on hand to keep roadways clear, and oftentimes we end up with everything covered in a half-inch (or more) of ice. It's a pain, to say the least.
North Texans also simply don't know how to drive on snow and ice.
Accidents tie up the highways and keep crews busy. The advice is always to just stay home. It's seriously just easier that way (and safer).
This robin was fooled into thinking spring was coming, but it's okay. So were we.
He apparently forgot that north Texas easily sees temperature swings of up to 50 degrees in a single day ... and that's the norm.
While this year was record-setting for north Texans, most of our winters are a little bit of cold followed by mild temperatures…and then repeat! It’s not unusual to see temperatures in the 70s or down to the teens. But isn’t that better than a constant, bone-chilling cold any day? It’s our spring that has more people talking…that’s when we get high winds, hailstorms, and tornadoes. But it’s just another aspect of living here, and we just wouldn’t be happier anywhere else.
