]]>For 80 years, the Chapel on the Rock in Colorado — located at Camp St. Malo — has endured against all odds, surviving both fire and flood to remain perched atop its sacred rock just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. With the majestic Mount Meeker as its backdrop, Saint Catherine’s Chapel on the Rock in Colorado is renowned for its elaborate stonework and dramatic setting which makes it one of the most unique chapels both in the state and beyond.
In 1916, Monsignor Joseph Bosetti was on a quest to locate the impact site from a falling star, when he happened upon a large rock formation on the outskirts of the Rocky Mountains. Bosetti was immediately reminded of the scripture Matthew 16:18, which reads: "Upon this rock, I'll build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Bosetti was very moved and envisioned a church rising from this magnificent rock. In 1936, his dream became a reality upon the completion of the St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, affectionately known as the Chapel on the Rock, designed by Denver architect Jacques Benedict.
The land on which the chapel stands was generously donated by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Malo to the Archdiocese of Denver and served as a youth camp until the late 1980s. It evolved and expanded to become the St. Malo Religious Retreat and Conference Center in 1987.
Today visitors continue to flock to this spectacular historic chapel in Denver, which seems to grow effortlessly from the bedrock, reaching ever heavenward.
Although the view of the Denver Chapel on the Rock from a distance is remarkably stunning, a closer examination reveals intricate stonework that is awe-inspiring all on its own.
While the exterior is particularly striking, the interior is just as magnificent and contains impressive statues lovingly carved in Bolzano, Italy, at the Giacomo-Mussner studios.
In 1993, Pope St. John Paul II prayed and blessed the Chapel of the Rock on his visit to Colorado for World Youth Day. The Pope hiked along the trails at Camp St. Malo, which was later named the John Paul II Trail in his honor.
Sadly, in 2011 the 60,000-square-foot conference center behind the church was burned to the ground in a devastating fire; however, the Chapel of the Rock remained unscathed. Another disaster struck in 2013 when 100-year rains produced flooding and a five-mile-long landslide that began atop Mount Meeker and ended at the foot of the chapel.
The surrounding landscape including the historic Pope John Paul II Trail was destroyed, but the chapel was once again miraculously spared and continues to stand proud and tall as a beacon beckoning passersby.
The Archdiocese of Denver has plans to restore Camp St. Malo to its former glory, but they could use your help. Please donate to the cause if you feel inclined to help preserve the rich heritage and history of this sacred site.

]]>The Mile High City is a lively, progressive metropolis with much to offer in the way of art, food, culture, (and legal substances), and as a result, the flood of new residents continues to swell with every passing year. While it can be exhilarating to live and work in a city that remains in a constant state of flux, growth, and change also come with unfortunate consequences, leading many to wonder, “Is Denver safe?” Although we live in a fairly safe city, the increase in population has also resulted in an increase in crime, which means there are some bad areas of Denver. Based on the number of offenses and crime density per square mile, here are the eight most dangerous neighborhoods in Denver.
Lincoln Park is not only one of Denver's oldest neighborhoods, but it also has a crime rate and poverty rate that exceeds city and national averages. In May 2015, Lincoln Park already had a reported 548 offenses and a crime density of 430 per square mile, and you can bet that statistic had more than doubled by year's end. Lincoln Park has its perks, though, including some stunning pieces of graffiti.
The actual park is one of the safest locations in the neighborhood. (It's also one of the most unique parks in Denver, as it was built on top of a burial ground.) Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the surrounding area. due to the number of drug and alcohol-related crimes that occur around Colfax Avenue, Cheesman Park makes the list, albeit on the lower end. Over the course of one year, there were 1,006 offenses, resulting in a crime density of 1,909 per square mile.
Ironically, what began as part of Mayor Robert W. Speer's City Beautiful civic improvement campaign in the early 1900s, is now one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Denver. While Civic Center
remains a stunning cultural epicenter, it's also the widely known chosen location for the city's homeless population, drug and alcohol users, thieves, vagrants, and the like. There were a reported 1,444 offenses in one year alone and a crime density of 4,750 per square mile.
Another Mile High mecca for tourists, drifters, drinkers, and cool kids is the ever-hip area known as LoDo. Unfortunately, the large number of people roaming the streets of Denver's transportation hub also means an extensive number of crimes. Within one year, there were 1,575 offenses reported, with a crime density of 3,588 per square mile.
Rather than being known for being home to the longest continuous street in America, East Colfax has a reputation for being among the bad parts of Denver to avoid - something that hasn't gone unnoticed. In the past, Playboy magazine once called Colfax "the longest, wickedest street in America," and if you've ever passed through the East section at night, you know that statement to be true. East Colfax is regarded as one of the city's up-and-coming neighborhoods, but it's also known for drugs and prostitution. Back in 2015, there were 1,827 offenses reported, with a crime density of 1,709 per square mile.
Not only one of the oldest neighborhoods in Denver, Cap Hill is also one of Denver's hippest, trendiest areas to live, and there are an infinite number of cool bars, shops, restaurants, and other places to see and be seen. But not surprisingly, that also makes it a hot spot for crime. Back in 2015, there were 2,232 reported offenses and a crime density of 3,302 per square mile.
Five Points is another of our city's newly revitalized, hippest parts of town to live and hang, and apparently, get into trouble. It's no longer among the worst neighborhoods in Denver, but with a crime density of 2,167 per square mile and 3,810 offenses over the course of one year, it's most definitely a place to exercise caution.
With a crime density of 7,007 per square mile and 3,020 offenses in just one year, Denver's CBD sadly reigns supreme among the most dangerous neighborhoods in Denver. And unless you live under a rock, you've heard about the shootings at 16th Street Mall, which like Civic Center, attracts hoards of both tourists and vagrants, which don't seem to mix. In the words of the honorable Edward Abbey, "When the biggest, richest, glassiest buildings in town are the banks, you know that town's in trouble." Interestingly enough, 16th Street has been named one of the most beautiful streets in the world.
So, did you know these were the worst neighborhoods in Denver? Where do you think the most dangerous neighborhoods in Denver are? Have any opinions on the best neighborhoods near Denver? Tell us.

]]>There are not only a lot of great things about Denver; there are also a lot of great things from Denver. For starters, everyone knows that Denver was one of the first major American cities to legalize recreational marijuana use and enjoy a made-to-order burrito from Chipotle, but did you know that the Mile High City was the first to experience a number of other things as well? Take, for instance, these 11 things that first happened in Denver:
1.) Denverites were the first to devour a juicy cheeseburger...
Many have claimed to have invented the cheeseburger, but we KNOW that it's among the many things Denver did first. It was invented by Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver.
Sure, we all know that Coors (the largest brewing facility in the world) is based out of Golden... but did you know that it was also INVENTED there by immigrants Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler in 1873?! (You probably did, but just humor me and act surprised.)
3.) ...and begin our days with a bowl of Shredded Wheat.
Is there anything better than a big bowl of Shredded Wheat -- which was invented by Henry Perky in Denver in 1890 -- to start your day? We didn't think so!
The dreaded wheel clamp (or "Denver Boot") was invented in 1944 by concert violinist Frank Marugg as a favor to his friends in law enforcement and politics. It might not be one of our favorite things from Denver, but it's still worth a mention.
It's the most wonderful time of the year and early 20th century merchants along the 16th Street Mall invented the most beautiful home decor of them all! (Seeing as though I never have to put them up/take them down, I am in LOVE with this kitschy Denver invention.)
Seeing as though this is a family site, I won't say too much about the invention of the tampon except for the fact that it's among the many inventions from Denver. It was created here in Colorado by Dr. Earle Haas (who also invented the diaphragm).
Attention all teenagers and mall walkers: The shopping center was invented by Denverite Temple Buell, who dreamed up the Cherry Creek Mall (pictured) in the early 1920s! Oh, and another fun fact: Buell also designed the Paramount Theater, 16th Street Mall, and -- you guessed -- the iconic Buell Theater.
During a dry spell in the early 1980s, Denver Water conceived the concept of xeriscaping, or "landscape (an area) in a style which requires little or no irrigation." Today, this idea is huge all over the country and can still be found in yards across Colorado.
The downside to your GrOpener and opening beers with ease is the fact that you are more susceptible to dropping your iPhone... enter the ingenious OtterBox, who's headquartered out of Fort Collins.
Among the many things Denver did first, Crocs have to be the most embarrassing. Despite the fact that they feel like walking on a cloud, I feel the need to apologize for this invention... Rest in peace, dignity; rest in peace.
So, were you aware of all the things Denver did first? What about all the great inventions from Denver? What other things from Denver would you add to this list? Share your thoughts with us!

]]>There are SO many fantastic things to do in the Mile High City that we could easily stay in the metro area for the rest of our lives and never get bored, but these unforgettable best day trips from Denver will make you reconsider marinating in your comfort zone! Have you sailed the wondrous waters of Lake Dillon? Stood atop the phenomenal Pikes Peak? Soaked yourself in the holy healing waters of a geothermal cave? No? Well, you’re welcome, because we’ve got all that and more comin’ at ya!
The Dillon Reservoir (or Lake Dillon to locals) is Denver Water's largest water storage facility and is home to the Frisco Bay Marina. The full-service certified clean marina offers boat rentals of all kinds, including canoes, kayaks, SUPs, and motor and fishing boats. Explore the 3,300 acres of the glistening lake and 25 miles of shoreline, while drinking in the spectacular surrounding mountain summits. Guided tours, sailboat lessons, and the Lake Dillon Water Taxi are available for those who'd rather not captain their own ship. (Note: Only furry friends are allowed to swim in the reservoir.)
After your sun-drenched day on the water, stop off at Pug Ryan's Lakeside Tiki Bar, "the coolest scene and hottest deck in Summit County." With a Rum Runner or Dark 'N' Stormy in hand and the waves gently lapping on the shoreline, you'll swear you're on a beach somewhere. (Except for those majestic peaks in the distance, that is.) It's one of the most unique things to do near Denver.
Another one of the best day trips near Denver happens to be Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas have much to offer Mile High day-trippers, including the infamous and incredible Pikes Peak Cog Railway, which just celebrated its 125th birthday. On June 30, 1891, the first steam train climbed from Manitou Springs to Pikes Peak, and today you can enjoy the same sights as those brave pioneers.
The train runs daily from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., travels along 8.9 miles of track, and lasts about three hours roundtrip. Enjoy views of waterfalls, the Continental Divide, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and even the skyscrapers of downtown Denver on a clear day. (Gifts and concessions are available, but we suggest saving your appetites and wallets for less touristy traps in Manitou Springs or Old Colorado City.)
Seven Falls is the only waterfall in Colorado on National Geographic's list of international wonders. The majestic 181-foot series of waterfalls is nestled in a 1,250-foot box canyon and has a 224-step stairway to the top. Also on site are hiking trails, zip lines, a restaurant, and more!
Colorado Springs has plenty of fabulous shops and eateries, but I suggest strolling the quaint streets of Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs instead, where you'll find a bounty of eateries, galleries, and shops with Native American art, jewelry, and artifacts that are sure to please.
End your day at the magical Garden of the Gods and roam amongst the impressive towering sandstone rock formations, as you watch the sun slip behind the picturesque Pikes Peak backdrop. And definitely take the time to peruse the Visitor and Nature Center, which has a wealth of western wares.
Situated at approximately 10,152 feet of elevation, Leadville is the nation's highest incorporated city and second highest incorporated municipality. It's also one of the best getaway spots near Denver.
Leadville is a lovely little gem in the heart of the Rockies at the headwaters of the Arkansas River, which was once a booming silver mining town. Today you can tour the historic structures and sites from the mining era and visit the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum downtown as well.
Leadville was the second most populous city in Colorado in the late 19th century (with Denver being first), and today it's a popular destination for mountain recreation including Turquoise Lake, Twin Lakes, and several surrounding 14ers viewable from town, such as Mount Elbert and Mount Massive.
And if you're not up for a strenuous hike, there are plenty of other trail options where you can explore the woods and wildflowers and enjoy breathtaking vista views of the high Rockies.
On your way out of town, stop off at the legendary Silver Dollar Saloon, where they've been slinging cold ones since 1879 and are reported to have served legends like Oscar Wilde and Doc Holliday.
Does all this Doc Holliday talk have you in a drinking and gambling mood? If so, head on down to Black Hawk, Colorado's largest gambling town, established in 1859. It's one of the most unique day trips near Denver.
Black Hawk is home to 18 casinos (some of which are open 24/7), where you can try your hand at poker, craps, blackjack, roulette, slots, and more. (Just remember: The house ALWAYS wins! Consider yourself warned.)
The historically preserved Main Street in Black Hawk is still reminiscent of its old mining town days and is stocked full of casinos, saloons, shops, and other old-time treasures. You can easily waste the day away roaming from casino to saloon to casino, but you can also take the shuttle bus or trek the short one-mile to nearby Central City for even more Colorado culture and casino fun.
After all that gallivanting and gambling you probably need a good dose of the great outdoors, and the wild wonder of Guanella Pass is just the ticket. You'll experience a wealth of Rocky Mountain beauty in just 22 miles on this (paved) breathtaking high mountain pass.
Guanella Pass begins in historic Georgetown and travels along South Clear Creek over the highest point of elevation (at 11,699'), and along the South Platte River to its culmination in Grant. Along the way, you'll experience many spectacular views, including Mt. Evans, Mt. Spalding, the Sawtooth, and Mt. Bierstadt at an impressive 14,060'.
There are no shortage of picnic areas where you can pull off and refuel, but you'll probably want to save up for the famous Coney Island Hotdog Stand at the end of your route near Bailey.
Definitely take the Georgetown Loop Railroad, which travels over 3 miles of narrow gauge track from Georgetown to Silver Plume. Experience the Rockies like you've never seen them as you twist and turn through Clear Creek Valley and over the notorious Devil's Gate Bridge. There's also the option to throw on a hard hat and explore the Lebanon Silver Mine, so be sure to take advantage!
Afterward, wander around Georgetown's charming historic district, where you'll find quaint shops and eateries, as well as must-see landmarks like the Hotel de Paris, Hamill House, and Energy Museum.
Another delightfully historic mining town (which looks like just another pit spot off I-70) is Idaho Springs, founded in 1859. It's one of the best day trips near Denver.
One point of interest is the Charlie Tayler Water Wheel, which was constructed by its namesake in 1893 and was used to power his ore processing mill on Ute Creek. In 1946, the water wheel was gifted to the people of Idaho Springs by Charlie Tayler's estate and moved to its current location in front of the 600-foot Bridal Veil Falls. The Charlie Tayler Water Wheel was restored to its former glory in 1988 and is the largest water wheel in the state of Colorado.
There are two mine tours available in Idaho Springs, including the famous the Argo Gold Mine and Mill, which opened in 1913. The mill was one of the largest in the state and was used to strip precious metals like gold, silver, copper, and lead from ore. However, the Argo Mill ceased operations in 1943, when a flooding accident left four miners dead. In 1976, the mill was bought, renovated, and reopened as a museum where you can view artifacts and study the heritage of the mining era. It's one of the most unique things to do around Denver.
After all that work at the mine, you'll probably need to hit up the hidden gem also known as the Indian Hot Springs. Soak in their mineral water pool beneath palm trees and flowering plants, submerge your buns in a geo-thermal cave, treat yourself to a mud bath, and more!
At the base of the Tenmile Range at about 9,600' is the former mining town of Breckenridge, which is now a thriving alpine resort with much to see and do. It's one of the most spectacular getaway spots near Denver.
There are hundreds of hiking and biking trails in and around the city, but one option (especially for those looking for fantastic views with a minimal amount of effort) is to take the ski lift up to the top of the peaks and hike back down into town. Winning!
Fish, stroll, bike, and lounge along the glorious Blue River, which is a centerpiece of this quaint, quirky Victorian town. Pop in any and all of their shops, restaurants, and galleries, and don't miss the historic Gold Pan Saloon, established in 1879. Also check out the fantastic calendar of summer events hosted by BreckCreate, including art festivals, live music, and much, much more!
The city of Golden is another of Colorado's old mining settlements turned thriving mountain town and was named the first official capital of the Colorado Territory in 1862. Today its quaint but bustling downtown is rich with restaurants, bars, boutiques, western flare, and all sorts of other raucous revelry. It is one of the most exciting day trips near Denver that you can take.
Of course one of the most notable attractions is the gigantic Coors Brewery, founded in 1873. Experience the world’s largest single-site brewery, view artifacts from bygone brewing days, and sample FREE beers at the end of the tour (in a limited quantity, of course).
Golden is also home to the Colorado Railroad Museum, which has over 100 engines, coaches, cabooses, and more, on its spacious 15-acre property. This 4-8-4 steam locomotive is the largest on site but is just one of MANY to explore. (Check their calendar for family-friendly special events throughout the summer.)
Just a short jaunt from downtown Golden is the Clear Creek History Park, which is home to original buildings from an old Golden Gate Canyon ranch from the 1800s. Among the structures is the Guy Hill schoolhouse (pictured here), which served the students of the canyon from 1876-1951. Other buildings include a log cabin, chicken coop, barn, and two-seat outhouse. (Things that make you go, hmmmm.)
There are tons of trails in and around Golden, but one of the most popular is the group known as the Clear Creek Trails, which offer recreation and respite for weary walkers throughout town.
Another prominent feature of the Golden landscape that is not to be missed is North Table Mountain Park, which offers over 15 miles of trails, vista views of Denver and the surrounding foothills, and the opportunity to see local wildlife like mule deer, golden eagles, red tail hawks, and prairie dogs. (For the best chance of seeing wildlife, enjoying a bit of solitude, and escaping the heat, it is suggested you start or end your day at North Table Mountain.)
Just outside of the fun and funky little town of Fort Collins is the 6.5-mile-long Horsetooth Reservoir, where you can fish, swim, boat, SUP, sail, and more! Inlet Bay Marina rents a whole host of motorized and non-motorized boats, including pontoons, jet skis, kayaks, and hydro bikes.
On the west side of the reservoir lies the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, just four miles from Fort Collins. The park offers almost 3,000 acres of woodlands, forests, grasslands, and an endless amount of trails, including the scramble to the top of Horsetooth Rock and Horsetooth Mountain summit at 7,256 feet.
After all of your phenomenal outdoor activities, head into Fort Collins and experience all that it has to offer, including breweries, galleries, eateries, parks, museums, live music, and a whole lot more. It's one of the best day trips near Denver.
And did I mention that they've got a pretty fantastic 4th of July fireworks display at City Park!? Just sayin'.
Would you take any of these day trips from Denver? If you want to add one more to the list, check out this charming town near Denver that’s one of Colorado’s most quirky, hippy, and happy!

]]>Looking to cleanse your soul in the river or cure your ailments in healing spring waters? In the summer you can wash away your troubles in these stellar swimming holes near Denver, provided by man and Mother Nature herself. Take a dip (and chips); relax on the shoreline or the sandy “beaches,” and bask in the sunshine and beauty that is Colorado. We’re a truly fortunate bunch to live in the midst of such richness and vibrancy, so go out and take the plunge!
Boulder Creek is a 31.4-mile-long creek that travels through the city of Boulder, making it a hot spot to cool off on a hot day. Since a good portion of it is in the metro area, residents of the town flock to the water during spring and summer. The nearly 32-mile Boulder Creek draining the Rockies west of Boulder turns into a lively "adult" playground come summertime. It's a popular spot for taking a cool dip, tubing, fly fishing, wading...and indulging in general mirth and cheer. Bring your Chacos, your towel, and your free-wheeling attitude and have a ball!
As one of the city's largest park and open space sites, the Aurora Reservoir in the city of Aurora boasts over 800 acres of water for swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating, plus a sandy beach for sunbathing. It is definitely among the best natural swimming spots near Denver. Another fun thing to do here is to check out their AWQUA Lounge to learn how the reservoir's water becomes Denver's drinking water.
With a 1,500-acre surface area and an expansive swim beach, the Chatfield Reservoir located at Chatfield State Park is a grand place to recreate or relax this summer. Swim or engage in a number of other available activities, such as boating, horseback riding, and bird watching. There are over 200 bird species here, including bald eagles, white pelicans, and burrowing owls.
At the headwaters of the Colorado River lies Grand Lake, Colorado's largest and deepest natural lake (and its namesake town). The lake is roughly a mile in length and width, with a maximum depth of 265 feet. There's a private yacht club, public boat ramps, a public dock, and publicly and privately owned marinas. And they even host sailing races. As swimming holes near Denver go, this is one of the most popular. (FYI: The Ute Tribe called it Spirit Lake and believed that departed souls dwell in its chilly waters.)
The Cache La Poudre River in Fort Collins just may boast the best, most authentic swimming holes near Denver! Rope swing into this paradise near Legacy Park or at Picnic Rock up the Poudre Canyon northwest of town. And as you can imagine, Picnic Rock has picnic tables and BBQ grills, as well as restrooms and a "beach" area. (Note: Be VERY aware of appropriate water levels, as they are often dangerously high in the spring and early summer).
Want to feel the sand between your toes while marveling at the beauty of the surrounding scenery? Head over to the Cherry Creek Reservoir to the beautiful white sand beach and take a plunge! It may not be the coast, but it's close enough for Denver.
See those lovely little turquoise pools in the Chalk Creek Canyon at the base of the surrounding Collegiate Peaks? That's the glorious Mount Princeton Hot Springs, complete with soaking pools, an exercise pool, creekside springs, and a historic Bath House that was established in 1867. If you're looking for the best natural swimming spots near Denver, this one definitely needs to be on your bucket list! Make it an overnight venture by staying in one of their many lodging options, or head into the neighboring towns of Salida and Buena Vista for more quality exploration.
On a superbly hot and sunny day, take a hike or bike at the scenic 2,711-acre Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, then cool off in the Horsetooth Reservoir
and have a leisurely lunch on the shoreline. On the South Bay, there is a great swim beach, picnic area, and facilities. It's splendid!
Even though it's a bit of a jaunt from Denver, it would be remiss of me not to mention the home of the "World's Largest Hot Springs Pool" created by Mother Nature herself - Glenwood Hot Springs. This spring has been delivering soothing, restorative waters rich in minerals to heal those who soak in them since 1888. Go take a nice long dip in Mother Nature's magical, powerful soaking sanctuary. (Fun fact: Three and a half million gallons of water still flow from the spring every day)!
This popular swimming hole at Bear Creek Lake Park with its stellar scenery, sandy swim beach, and a 400-foot lap swimming lane is a great place to savor a day with friends and family this summer. Also on site is a playground for kids, volleyball courts, a concession stand, and boat rentals that include canoes, kayaks, sailboats, and paddle boards. You can even wakeboard or waterski! Yippee!
