If you thought the French Dip Sandwich came from France, you’re in for a surprise! There is actually quite an entertaining story about the origins of this famous sandwich in Los Angeles.
Way back in 1918, a little accident while making a policeman a sandwich at Philippe’s in downtown LA resulted in a popular menu item that has brought people back to the restaurant for over 100 years.
The chef mistakenly dropped the French roll into the pan used for roasting, which was full of cooking juices. The officer said he would take the sandwich as it was, and he enjoyed it so much that he brought others back with him to order more.
But this delicious sandwich is not the only reason people flock to Philippe’s. You can also have an incredible breakfast here. Enjoy all the classics, from eggs to pancakes to tasty French toast.
Speaking of sweet treats, you can enjoy some amazing donuts at Philippe’s, too! They’re known to be so good you just might have to take some home with you.
It’s always a special thing to be able to go right to the source of your favorite food, and getting to experience the site of the first French dip sandwich is no exception. Whether you came just to sample the true first iteration of this favorite or you’re here for the sweets, Philippe’s is sure to show you a good time.
