If you are going to live in Louisville, then there are a few unwritten rules you need to learn. They range from how to handle the weather to how to communicate with your fellow Louisvillians, and all of us who live in the city know them by heart. See which ones you know below, and which ones should be added to the list.
1. First things first: Know how to pronounce "Louisville."
Everyone from out of town says it differently. "Louie-ville?" "Louis-ville?" Nope. True Louisvillians pronounce it as "Loo-uh-vul."
2. You HAVE to pick a side.
Not a big sports fan? Doesn't matter. The UofL/UK rivalry has been going on since the beginning of time. You have to pick a team, and you have to be prepared to fight to defend their honor.
3. Never count on the weather.
We have a saying here in the Ohio Valley, "If you don't like the weather, wait around a minute and it'll change." One day it's sunny and 70 degrees, the next day it's below freezing. Good luck planning your outdoor wedding!
4. Muhammad Ali is the greatest.
He is, was, and always will be. And he's from Louisville!
5. Don't expect to get anything done during Derby week.
The entire city practically shuts down for the events leading up to the Kentucky Derby, and especially for the Derby itself. There are parties everywhere, and don't even get us started on the traffic.
6. You can't go anywhere without getting a 44-ounce soft drink from Speedway first.
Or Thornton's in a pinch. Either way, you can't start your day without a quick fill-up on gas station coke.
7. You HAVE to go to the Kentucky State Fair.
It doesn't matter how many times you've gone before, every August when the fair rolls into town, you have to go again, sometimes more than once. It has rides, concerts, corn dogs, and hamburgers with doughnuts for buns, though, so it's a sacrifice most Louisvillians are willing to make.
8. Respect the arts.
Outsiders may not know this, but Louisville has a huge arts scene. From the Kentucky Center for the Arts and the Speed Art Museum to the Actors Theatre of Louisville, there is something for all kinds of art lovers in Louisville.
9. You must have a mini Louisville Slugger bat somewhere in your home.
Most of us don't remember how or when we got them (they give them out for free at the Louisville Slugger Museum, so they are pretty ubiquitous), but we all have them. They're great for keeping near the bed in case a small burglar breaks in.
10. Be prepared for bridge traffic.
Louisville has lots of bridges that lead to Indiana, and they are always jam-packed during rush hour. So if you have to take the bridge, plan to be late for work.
11. Be prepared to complain about said bridge traffic.
After the UofL/UK rivalry, it's Louisvillians' favorite conversation topic.
12. Remember that Louisville is diverse.
There are just as many hipsters in Louisville as there are camo-wearing country boys, so be kind to everyone.
