If you are going to live in Louisville, then there are a few unwritten rules you need to learn. They range from how to handle the weather to how to communicate with your fellow Louisvillians, and all of us who live in the city know them by heart. Everyone from out of town says it differently. "Louie-ville?" "Louis-ville?" Nope. True Louisvillians pronounce it as "Loo-uh-vul."

The entire city practically shuts down for the events leading up to the Kentucky Derby, and especially for the Derby itself. There are parties everywhere, and don't even get us started on the traffic.

Or Thornton's in a pinch. Either way, you can't start your day without a quick fill-up on gas station coke.

It doesn't matter how many times you've gone before, every August when the fair rolls into town, you have to go again, sometimes more than once. It has rides, concerts, corn dogs, and hamburgers with doughnuts for buns, though, so it's a sacrifice most Louisvillians are willing to make.

Outsiders may not know this, but Louisville has a huge arts scene. From the Kentucky Center for the Arts and the Speed Art Museum to the Actors Theatre of Louisville, there is something for all kinds of art lovers in Louisville.

Most of us don't remember how or when we got them (they give them out for free at the Louisville Slugger Museum, so they are pretty ubiquitous), but we all have them. They're great for keeping near the bed in case a small burglar breaks in.

Louisville has lots of bridges that lead to Indiana, and they are always jam-packed during rush hour. So if you have to take the bridge, plan to be late for work.
