There are many beautiful churches throughout the city of Louisville, filled with history and beauty. Some of these are grand cathedrals that decorate a major street, while others are tucked away. One such chapel is just northeast of Louisville, in the city of Crestwood. Duncan Memorial Chapel is a unique church with a fascinating history. There is really no other chapel in the world like this charming place near Louisville.
Nestled within Floydsburg Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in Kentucky, is the beautiful Duncan Memorial Chapel.
As a memorial to his wife, Alexander E. Duncan built the chapel in 1936 and 1937, on the rolling hills of this historic cemetery. He also expanded the property at the same time, in honor of his grandfather. Both Mr. and Mrs. Duncan were buried in the Chapel's chancel.
The architecture of the chapel is Early English Gothic, and when you walk around the grounds, you are transported to the English countryside.
The interior is quaint and beautiful. The walls were built from stone that was gathered from surrounding countryside fencing and the pulpit, benches, rafters, arches, and porches were built from sandblasted white oak. The combination makes for a classically stunning church that is both timeless and welcoming.
The details of the Chapel, as well as the grounds, make for an unforgettable experience when you visit.
The stained glass windows let in warm, colorful light as they hover above the detailed statue, depicting The Last Supper, and the grounds are reminiscent of an English garden with lush landscaping and a charming pond.
