Milwaukee is absolutely bursting with culture. Unfortunately, news headlines sometimes paint us in a bad light for segregation, but the variety of communities and neighborhoods here each bring their own history with them, and we can learn from it all. From food to art and music to traditions, there are so many unique experiences to be had!

2. We even celebrate everything with festivals.

We're known as the "City of Festivals," and for a good reason! All year long, especially in summer, the city is bursting with celebrations (and fireworks)! From Polish Fest to Mexican Fiesta and the world-famous Summerfest, we are always celebrating one another.

There are hundreds of fantastic restaurants in Milwaukee, but some just go above and beyond when it comes to creating a memorable experience that will stick with you long after the happy food coma fades. These unique places to eat in Wisconsin were chosen both for their food (or drinks) and for their fantastic overall dining experience. Here are a handful of iconic Milwaukee restaurants you can’t skip:

1. SafeHouse

If you're anything like us, you can't help but daydream of being a super suave secret agent after seeing a spy movie. If you want a taste of espionage life without the danger of dodging bullets from double agents, leaping between rooftops to chase down bad guys, and diving out of the way of fiery explosions, SafeHouse is about to become your new favorite spot. You can't help but feel like a badass at this spy-themed restaurant in Milwaukee.

You'll need to give the secret password to get in (no, we're not kidding... but if you don't know it, the doorman will determine if you are friend or foe through a series of hilarious requests) and the entrance is hidden in an unassuming alleyway. You'll be dining in the company of an unbelievable collection of Medieval Art worth more than $4 million! Initially, you could only find Purple Door Ice Cream in pints at local businesses, but business has been booming since they opened up shop over on 2nd Street. You’ll find classic flavors right alongside flavors you (almost) can’t believe, like Butternut Squash, Raspberry Green Tea, Chai & Pink Peppercorn, Juniper Lime with Gin, and Olive Oil. Don’t knock ‘em ‘til you’ve tried ‘em… they are quite tasty! For the best ice cream in Wisconsin, Purple Door is the place to be.

Clock Shadow Creamery, however, is right here in Milwaukee and in one of the first (and few) urban cheese factories! Some of their most popular cheeses are Chevre, Quark, Ricotta and, of course, the freshest cheese curds in Milwaukee.

No Friday is complete without a fish fry. A meal with the community consisting of delicious fried fish, cole slaw, rye bread, and french fries or potato pancakes is a Milwaukee staple.

7 Small Towns Around Milwaukee Where Everyone Knows Your Name

Big city life in Milwaukee is always fun, but it’s not for everyone. Sometimes you just need to slow down and go somewhere where everyone knows your name (if everyone in Smallwaukee doesn’t already!). These friendly towns in Wisconsin each bring a charm of their own that’s unique and full of character. Whether you’re visiting for a day or looking to settle down right outside of city limits, these are seven small towns you won’t want to pass up!

1. Whitefish Bay

If you spend a little time in Whitefish Bay, everyone will truly know your name. This is a great place to plant down roots, with some cool history tied to it. In 1889, Captain Frederick Pabst, one of Milwaukee's beer barons, spent $30,000 to take advantage of Whitefish Bay's unique location near the lake and opened a resort called the Century Resort. As many as 10,000 people would visit the resort on a summer day, traveling by horse and buggy, railroad, trolley, or excursion steamer to experience all the fun. It closed in 1914, and the land was turned into residential lots. Now, this little town is a great place to be, especially for families, with an emphasis on their education system. Walking down Silver Spring will always make you feel right at home!

2. Shorewood

The village of Shorewood is a unique and wholesome place to reside. Located along the lake, it’s a very scenic little spot. The urban village has nearly 13,000 residents, making it one of the densest communities in the state, but for good reason! Sitting just 20 miles north of Milwaukee, "The 'Burg" makes for the perfect day trip in Wisconsin, filled with art, shops, restaurants, and a location that sits right upon Cedar Creek. This historic small town is filled with things to do and is quaint as can be.

4. Glendale

Glendale is a small city with a population just over 12,000. Despite being just four miles from Milwaukee, Glendale has kept a small town identity of its own. Glendale is home to some of our favorite attractions like the Sprecher Brewery and Bayshore Mall. It might be easy to get it mixed up with surrounding towns, but Glendale is a truly great place of its own.

5. St. Francis

St. Francis is a residential area just south of Milwaukee, right on Lake Michigan. It's a very safe and quiet town in a beautiful area and it also has some interesting history and architecture. The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi established their headquarters there in the mid-19th century. Being right on the lake, yet out of the bustle of big city, life makes St. Francis an asset to many.

6. Wauwatosa

Tosa is growing rapidly but hasn't lost its charm. Though it can be easy to mesh Wauwatosa with Milwaukee, it is still very much a village full of friendly faces. State Street is the perfect place for an afternoon stroll where you'll truly see this town shine (despite how hard it is for newcomers to pronounce!)

7. Cudahy

Cudahy has grown into a popular South Milwaukee city, but it was originally known for something much different. The town was originally called Buckhorn Settlement but was renamed in the late 1800s when Patrick Cudahy purchased the land with a vision to grow his meatpacking business. It worked, and Cudahy has thrived ever since. Now, this residential area just south of Milwaukee is a gorgeous, clean, and safe place to settle down.

There’s no denying that Wisconsin is one of the most beautiful states in the entire country, and Milwaukee is lucky to be in a spot where access to our stunning state parks and forests is quick and easy! With a lovely lake to our east, rolling glacial plains to the west, and fantastics forests all around us, we can explore the incredible natural landscapes that make our state so special without wasting days getting there. In fact, these nine amazing state parks and forests are all within 100 miles of Milwaukee and offer terrific activities and adventures for when you just need a day away from the city. We’ve listed these amazing state parks out by distance, so it’s easy to pick how far you want to go!

1. Lakeshore State Park

You don't even need to leave the city to explore one of the most beautiful coastlines in the land. Sometimes we take for granted how amazing our views of Lake Michigan are. When you need a quick pick-me-up but don't have time for an all-out adventure, stop to soak in the sights and appreciate how lucky we are to see them every single day! Lakeshore State Park is located at 500 N Harbor Dr., Milwaukee, WI, 53202.

2. Havenwoods State Forest

Havenwoods State Forest is another awesome spot right here in the city! Between the grasslands, woodlands, wetlands, and gardens, there's a little bit of everything to enjoy here. This 237-acre protected area has tons of trails to explore and a fantastic arboretum that provides a little natural oasis in the middle of the urban environment. In fact, Havenwoods State Forest is the only urban forest in the state, and you'll find it located at 6141 N Hopkins St., Milwaukee, WI, 53209.

3. Kettle Moraine State Forest - Lapham Peak Unit

Kettle Moraine State Forest - Lapham Peak Unit is located along Kettle Moraine Scenic Dr., Delafield, WI, 53018. There are numerous places to explore in this superlative state park, where you can even hike to the tallest spot in the county! Climb a 45-foot observation tower atop the highest point in Waukesha County -- 1,233 feet above sea level -- on your next visit to this state park near Milwaukee.

4. Kettle Moraine State Forest - Pike Lake Unit

Just east of Hartford and 25 miles north of Milwaukee, the Kettle Moraine State Forest - Pike Lake Unit offers an equally stunning spot to explore. There are nine different trails in this portion of the Kettle Moraine State Forest with 2.5 miles of ski trails that are groomed during the winter months. In the warmer seasons, Pike Lake is an awesome place to spend a day on the water. Toss out a line and try to pull in a few pike or walleye for dinner or spend the day splashing at the swimming beaches. You can even bring your furry friends (as long as they stay on leash)! Kettle Moraine State Forest - Pike Lake Unit is located at 3544 Kettle Moraine Rd., Hartford, WI, 53027.

5. Harrington Beach State Park

If you are looking for stunning lake views, but want to get outside of the city, head to Harrington Beach State Park. It's only 35 miles north of Milwaukee and has 702 acres of beautiful natural areas to explore. It's a super popular spot to go camping during the summer and has some great areas for kayaking and canoeing along the shore. The park is open year round for hikers, skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers and has seven miles of trails to tackle. Pack a picnic to enjoy on the beach or bring your camping gear along for an overnight stay. There are tons of ways to have fun at Harrington Beach! 6. Aztalan State Park

Aztalan State Park is a truly unique spot located just 50 miles west of Milwaukee. The park is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Landmark due to its most stunning feature: the remnants of an ancient settlement that includes unique man-made mounds thought to have been used for religious and cultural purposes by a Mississippian tribe between 900 - 1300 A.D. There are three incredible mounds on site, as well as a reconstructed stockade wall made from vertically-positioned logs that once surrounded the settlement. Amazing artifacts have been discovered here, including items made from copper mined in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and shells from the Gulf of Mexico that suggest that the people who once populated the area had an active, expansive trade network. 7. Kohler-Andrae State Park

Kohler-Andrae State Park is about 52 miles north of Milwaukee and two miles south of Sheboygan. There are several miles of Lake Michigan beaches and natural sand dunes with five different hiking trails to explore. The wooden Cordwalk that winds through coastline woods, wetlands, and the rolling dunes is especially cool and offers the opportunity to see many different species of plants and animals that live in this beautiful wildlife refuge. Kohler-Andrae State Park is located at 1020 Beach Park Ln., Sheboygan, WI, 53081.

8. Big Foot Beach State Park

This beautiful beach on Lake Geneva has some of the clearest water in the state and 6.5 miles of trails winding along the shoreline and through wetlands, forests, and meadows. There are 100 campsites here, which makes it an excellent spot for a weekend getaway! There are picnic areas, swimming areas, and fishing spots all around the lovely little Ceylon Lagoon, which is particularly stunning at sunset. The lagoon is also a wonderfully calm spot to canoe and kayak, and there are several spots to rent equipment in the area! 9. Point Beach State Forest

Point Beach State Forest is the furthest point from home; it's located two miles north of Two Rivers and right on the edge of our 100-mile limit for this list. Although it takes about an hour and a half to get here, we couldn't bear to leave it off the list... it's just too darn pretty. The 2,903-acre state forest actually includes three different state natural areas; Wilderness Ridge, Two Creeks Buried Forest, and the Point Beach Ridges. Point Beach State Forest is home to several different protected species of plants and animals and there are tons of opportunities to catch a glimpse of them along the 17 miles of hiking and nature trails. Don't miss the picturesque Rawley Point Lighthouse at the north end of the beach! Point Beach State Forest is located at 9400 County Rd O, Two Rivers, WI, 54241.

Shakers Cigar Bar is the only licensed cigar bar in the city and is well-known for their hand-rolled cigars and impressive drink list. Milwaukee might be highly underrated, but if you’ve spent any amount of time here you’ll understand how great it actually is. Specifically, we have some privileges that other cities simply don’t. Whether it be the brewing history we were built upon, greenery as far as the eye can see, or some really, really good cheese, these are eight of the privileges only residents of Milwaukee can claim.

1. All of the beer.

As home to the history of many large brewing companies — Miller, Schlitz, Pabst — Milwaukee is truly the beer capital of the nation. With our German heritage and the Great Lake providing great water to brew even better beer, Milwaukee has unanimously always been the star of the beer world. Now, there’s not often a street without a bar or a restaurant serving up the best of the best.

2. Fine cheese.

It's common knowledge that Wisconsin is the Dairy Land, but with Milwaukee’s food culture rapidly expanding, we’ve perfected our dairy roots! If you're looking for a cheese plate, creamery, or a burger topped with the finest aged cheeses, Milwaukee is the place to be.

3. A festival for everything.

Milwaukee is unofficially named the "City of Festivals" and no city in the country can top that. Our summers are filled with festivals every week, and this isn't even counting the endless community street fairs. Besides hosting dozens of major ethnic and cultural festivals, we’re home to the largest music festival in the world — Summerfest.

4. Butter burgers.

Some people might call this unnecessary, we call it delicious. There’s nothing better than a burger doused in butter. Hey, there’s even a law in Wisconsin prohibiting the sale of margarine over butter, so clearly, we take our butter seriously!

5. Homemade bratwurst.

Here in Milwaukee, we will forever choose brats over hot dogs, and that’s probably because we have the best. Our strong German heritage brought us beer, but it also brought us brats! We are home to the best bratwurst around, and no cookout is complete without a Usinger’s sausage.

6. Frozen custard.

Milwaukee might as well be the frozen custard capital of the country. We make our custard right, and we make a lot of it! If you have the privilege of experiencing this sweet dessert in our city, you have to visit Leon’s.

7. Friday night fish frys.

Friday night fish frys have become a staple in every Milwaukeean’s week. Not only do we have the honor of consistently eating amazing fried fish, coleslaw, rye bread, and potato pancakes, but we get to do it with the whole community, all the while listening and dancing to old-fashioned polka music. We do fish frys right.

8. The greatest lake.

Lake living is truly a privilege, and until you’ve lived upon the shores of one you may not understand. Living on Lake Michigan is one of the greatest privileges we have, from the watersport opportunities to the way it makes our weather more mild. We wouldn’t give up our beautiful lake for anything.
