The story of this Minnesota iconoclastic starts in 2008 when life took an unexpected detour for Lenne that presented a unique opportunity.

When life hands us lemons, we have two choices: put our hands up and, well, give up, or, roll up our sleeves and get to work.
Life handed French-expat-turned-Midwest-implant Alain Lenne a big bowl of lemons in 2008 when personal and professional tragedy struck in the form of "a sad divorce and losing a real estate business."
One of these things would have been enough to discourage many people to the point of defeat, but not Lenne. A self-described entrepreneur who has always worked for himself, Lenne "decided to take a chance and open a creperie" – in the middle of All-American Midwest, USA: Minneapolis, Minnesota.
And so, in 2008, he opened La Belle Crepe, a small creperie located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The small restaurant serves beautifully executed crepes, both sweet and savory, quickly gaining an almost cult-like following and earning Alain the devotion and adoration of Minneapolitans.
Alain trained and developed a strong team of crepe-making experts, turning the creperie into a highly sought-after caterer. But the French chef and entrepreneur dreamed bigger.
As the creperie's fanbase grew, so too did Lenne's culinary offerings. "I added banh mi sandwiches, then pho to the menu," he says, making for a wholly unique and unprecedented Vietnamese-French fusion in the heart of the American Midwest.
Lamb and tzatziki noodles and tofu bánh mì sandwiches... in Minneapolis, MN? Would it work? Would people go for it? Absolutely.
"In 2020, we divided the business in two: La Belle Crepe Catering and Come Pho Soup," explains Lenne. A crazy concept? Perhaps. But a concept enthusiastically and exuberantly embraced in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Widely considered to be the best pho in the region, these hearty and herbaceous bowls of hot, brothy soup make for a wholly comforting winter lunch. In this way, a pho shop in Minneapolis makes all the sense in the world -- but even if it didn't, Lenne would still have the support and devotion of his town.
Because today, folks visit Lenne for the full experience -- not just the food. Diners enjoy the smiling chef's French banter and zest for fun.
When you visit Lenne at 825 Nicollet Mall in Downtown Minneapolis, you'll step inside a shop that's wholly, wonderfully unique. It features a wall of bills from around the world, a beautiful chandelier, a giant whisk hanging from the ceiling, and a bike mounted above the menu wall. It's quirky, but delightfully so -- just like its chef-owner.

In the spring of 2017, The Minneapolis Parks Board decided to reintroduce Lake Calhoun to its original name, Bde Maka Ska (pronounced be-DAY mah-kah skah), a Dakota phrase that means "white earth lake." While this brings the lake back to its roots, we can celebrate the lake for its stunning sunsets, beaches, and how easy it is to kayak around the lake. With its proximity to Uptown, Bde Maka Ska is the lake for everyone. Some would say it is the best lake in Minneapolis, but there are plenty more in contention.

2. Cedar Lake
Home of the not-so Hidden Beach, this lake is an incredible place for a Minneapolitan. It features bike paths, designated picnic areas, as well as many other amenities. Spending time at the lake, especially at Hidden Beach, will give you an idea of what Minneapolis weird is all about.
3. Lake of the Isles
This is just another part of Minneapolis' splendid chain of lakes. Lake of the Isles is located in the Kenwood neighborhood of the city and has a stately fountain for all to see. The bike and walking paths will help you see this lake from every gorgeous view. If you must, take to the water and kayak along.
4. Como Lake
Near the Como Conservatory and Como Zoo in St. Paul, this quaint lake is just one of many things the city has to offer. You can rent paddle boats to explore the water yourself or you can stroll around the lake and take in the sights.

5. Powderhorn Lake
Powderhorn Lake sits within Powderhorn Park in South Minneapolis. The Department of Natural Resources maintains the stock of fish within the lake and you can fish at the designated fishing pier. This lake is a little underrated and deserves your love.
6. Lake Harriet
Lake Harriet has everything you'd ever need in a city lake. It has a beautiful, popular beach, rentable kayaks and paddle boats, a killer food stand or two, and a bandshell for outdoor movies and concerts. It's easy to make a whole day at Lake Harriet. Be sure to take in the elegance that is a sailboat floating along the waters. It's downright gorgeous.
7. Lake Nokomis
Lake Nokomis is the site of many winter activities, but it's just as exciting in the summer. The beach of Lake Nokomis in Minnesota has a lifeguard on duty so you and your family can always swim safely. Youth swim lessons are taught within the lake. Nokomis also holds a variety of events during the summer, including music and movies in the park.
8. Lake Phalen
Located in Saint Paul, Lake Phalen within Phalen Regional Park is filled with fun summer events year after year. One of the most prominent is the annual Dragon Festival - a festival aimed at celebrating those of Asian-Pacific ethnicity and sharing their culture and history. The event has excellent local food, many sights to see, dragon boat races, and a 5k!
9. Lake Minnetonka
A West Metro icon, Lake Minnetonka is a marvel. It's a great lake to have fun and take in all of the possibilities that Minnesota summers have to offer. Lake Minnetonka is an incredibly special and beautiful lake in the Greater Twin Cities area. It's definitely boat friendly and is home to a large number of luxury homes.

]]>There’s so much history in Minneapolis that it should come as no surprise that there are many things Minneapolis did first. We may not be as old as some cities that were founded with the original colonies, but there are so many great inventions from Minneapolis that have quite literally changed the world! Minneapolis and Saint Paul might not be anywhere near the oldest cities in the United States, but we’ve been trailblazers on some very special things. Here are 11 things Minneapolis and St. Paul did before anyone else. Check out these fun facts about Minneapolis:
1. Did you know that the first successful open heart surgery was performed here in Minneapolis?
If that's not a claim to fame, we don't know what is. This has been life-changing for so many people all over the globe. The groundbreaking surgery was performed on a five-year-old girl at the University of Minnesota in 1952. This paved the way for the future of cardio-thoracic medical practice.
2. Have memories of shopping at an indoor mall? Yeah, a Minneapolis suburb was the first to make that happen.
It makes sense that Edina, Twin Cities suburb, would create the first indoor shopping mall in 1955. After all, it's not very practical to expect Minnesotans to shop outdoors in the winter! Today, of course, Minnesota is home to the largest mall in the country: the Mall of America, located just outside in another nearby suburb.
3. You can thank Minneapolis for frozen pizza with crispy crusts.
The Totino family owned a restaurant in northeast Minneapolis. They eventually sold their beloved crispy crust recipe to Pillsbury in the 1970s. The matriarch of the Totino family even began working for Pillsbury in an attempt to perfect the pizza crust. Every time you throw a frozen pizza in the oven, appreciate that the crust isn't the texture of cardboard. Thanks, Minneapolis!
4. The popular party game Twister was invented here.
Nothing like a game encouraging you to bend your body in ways it isn't supposed to. The game was unique in that the players themselves served as the game pieces. The patent was granted in 1969 and the game was originally called Pretzel.
5. Our beloved skyways were invented here, and they are certainly here to stay.
The first skyways in Minneapolis were built in 1962. You might assume they were created to keep Minneapolitans warm in the winter as they made their way downtown, but you would be wrong. The skyway system was built to encourage consumer consumption and keep downtown business attractive. Who knew? The benefit of heated walks in the winter is certainly a huge one!
6. The first grocery bag with handles was invented here.
This one's certainly a handy invention from Minneapolis!
7. The oldest sketch comedy theater in the country is right here in Minneapolis.
The Brave New Workshop has been around since 1958! It's the oldest workshop for comedy and improv in the country. former Senator Al Franken actually started his comedy career here, before moving on to be one of the original writers of Saturday Night Live.
8. The Minneapolis Public Library was the first to designate a "kids" section for books.
Before that, Harlequin romance novels might be placed adjacent to Dr. Seuss, which could certainly make an outing to the library as a kid quite interesting!
9. Here's a tasty invention from Minneapolis: the Milky Way candy bar was created here in 1923.
The Mar-O-Bar company was founded in Minneapolis in 1920. Three years later, the world's first "filled candy bar," known as the Milky Way, was crafted here. You can eat these the old-fashioned way, right out of the wrapper, or take a trip to the Minnesota State Fair and enjoy one deep-fried on a stick... the choice is yours.
10. We created the original Carrie Bradshaw (sort of).
Okay, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" wasn't as risque as "Sex and the City," but Mary Tyler Moore's character was a single, confident, ambitious woman making her way in the city of Minneapolis. No cosmopolitans or Manhattan socialites needed here! Moore's character paved the way for later female-driven shows.
11. Minneapolis is home to the ugliest pants in the world.
Zubaz. What can we say about them? Former governor Jesse Ventura sported them and thought they were a good idea. They weren't. This still hasn't aged well. Minneapolitans are capable of some serious fashion faux pas.

1. Afton State Park (31 miles from Minneapolis)
If your ideal day away from the city includes being one with nature and enjoying plenty of fresh air, Afton State Park is the place for you to be. This breathtaking park was established back in 1969 to preserve bluff lands and the terrain former glaciers created throughout the region. It provides the perfect space to hike, bird watch, and picnic. It's only a bit away from Minneapolis, but you'll feel like you're nowhere near the big city. During the winter months, consider skiing and snowboarding at the nearby Afton Alps for a well-rounded experience.
2. Glensheen Historic Estate (157 miles from Minneapolis)
If you decide to take a day trip to the city of Duluth, you should definitely make time for a visit to Glensheen Mansion, a commanding historic estate that sits on almost eight acres of Lake Superior-side property. The late Victorian architecture of the mansion is straight out of a fairy tale. Of course, the mansion's history is not without tragedy -- in the summer of 1977, two murders occurred on the estate's grounds. Some say it is now haunted, so proceed with caution if you're easily spooked.
3. Lindstrom, Minnesota (41 miles from Minneapolis)
The lovely town of Lindstrom is known as "Minnesota's Little Sweden." What's not to love about that? The community's unique water tower is designed like a teapot, which is merely an introduction to this adorable little Nordic town. As you venture through the area, you'll find delightful little bakeries, bistros, and inns that create endless fun and charm. If you're looking to spend some time in the water, Lindstrom even has a fun public beach.
4. Northfield, Minnesota (43.5 miles from Minneapolis)
Northfield is a gorgeous town that sits south of Minneapolis. Both St. Olaf and Carleton colleges are located in Northfield and are known to be some of the prettiest university campuses in the state. Northfield offers so much more than meets the eye. Its historical claim to fame? Jesse James and his gang tried to rob the town in 1786 but failed to do so. If this sort of history intrigues you, then there's a whole museum dedicated to the affair. It's a must-see while you're exploring Northfield and its many marvels.
5. Stillwater, Minnesota (26 miles from Minneapolis)
Situated peacefully along the banks of the St. Croix River, Stillwater already gets quite a bit of attention -- and we think it deserves every little bit of this fame. The views of the river here are absolutely incredible, the antique shopping throughout town is to die for, and Stillwater knows how to provide top-notch dining experiences and cuisine. Whether you're interested in historic sightseeing, wineries and breweries, or something in between, Stillwater holds excitement for everyone.
6. Taylors Falls, Minnesota (51 miles from Minneapolis)
If you are the outdoorsy type, you absolutely must visit Taylors Falls. This small town is home to a variety of hiking trails, as well as wonderful views that can be explored on the water by renting a kayak or taking an exciting boat tour. If that weren't enough, the local history museum will teach you everything you need to know about the town's intriguing past. It's the perfect place for a getaway from Minneapolis.

This lake is the largest and deepest lake in all of Minneapolis, and North Beach is one of the most popular in the entire city, maybe only surpassed by Lake Harriet. The Bde Maka Ska North Beach is clean and family-friendly, making it the perfect spot for fun in the sun.
2. Shady Oak Beach (Minnetonka)
Lake Minnetonka is easily the most high-profile lake in the entire state. Every summer, the lake is full of boats of visitors enjoying watersports and lake parties. The Shady Oak Beach features 76 feet of shoreline, with two sand play areas and a concession stand to make it the perfect swimming hole for all day fun.
3. Cedar Lake Beach (Minneapolis)
The Minneapolis Chain of Lakes knows how to do swim-friendly beaches right. Cedar Lake has three beaches for you to choose from. Our favorite spot is Cedar Lake Beach, also known as the "Hidden Beach." It’s a bit more secluded, a perfect spot to swim, and is a huge component of Minneapolis’ counterculture history.
4. Elm Creek Swimming Beach (Maple Grove)
Some of the best swimming holes are man-made, as with the case with Elm Creek Park Reserve’s swim pond. The pond is well-maintained by the park and is a family-friendly spot that features large umbrellas to beat the heat, as well as a concession stand to keep you hydrated while you splash in this lake. This is also home to one of the best hikes in Minnesota.
5. Hidden Falls (Saint Paul)
Do you want to go chasing waterfalls in Minnesota? In Saint Paul, you can find Hidden Falls. Immerse yourself in the cool water of the falls... it’s a magical experience.
6. Lake Harriet (Minneapolis)
Lake Harriet has it all: a pristine beach, sailboats floating on the horizon, a bandshell for free outdoor movies and concerts, and an immensely popular concession stand called the "Bread and Pickle," which makes a beachside to-go meal tastier than you thought possible. The Minneapolis Farmers Market is pretty darn amazing. The downtown location closes for the winter, but the Lyndale Market is open year-round and there are hundreds of vendors who come to sell fresh veggies, fruits, and other non-food items. Maybe this is why our restaurant scene is so delicious...
6. We know how to brew great beer.
There's no denying that Minnesota has seen a craft beer boom, and some of the best breweries are right here in Minneapolis. There are dozens of taprooms to try; some of the favorites include Dangerous Man Brewing Co., Surly Brewing Co., and Insight Brewing Co., but there are tons of excellent options.
Our brewers did quite well this year at the World Beer Cup. Insight's 'Sunken City' took home a bronze medal for the Belgian-style fruit beer category and Bauhaus Brew Labs' 'Wonderstuff' was awarded bronze in the International-style lager category.

While we're on the topic of beverages, let's not forget the coffee. Minneapolis was recognized as the 3rd best city for coffee lovers earlier this year.

Minneapolis has become a cultural melting pot and the city has the largest Somali population and the only Somali Cultural Museum in the country. This digital light display is so cool, in fact, that the owner now does special light displays for venues all around Minnesota and Illinois. This downtown Minneapolis restaurant is truly unique - it’s built into a historic horse stable! The great atmosphere is only one small piece of what makes Spoon and Stable fantastic; the star of the show is, of course, the food. Chef Gavin Kaysen is a James Beard Award winner and a master of flavor. His dishes highlight local and seasonal Midwestern ingredients, fusing your favorite comfort foods with Kaysen’s famous French flair… and the result is deliciously beautiful.
Everything on this menu is carefully crafted, and you can definitely taste it. Some of the standout dishes are the out-of-this-world bison tartare, melt-in-your-mouth pot roast, incredibly fresh seafood, and the signature pork chop, but everything on this menu - from appetizer to dessert - is unique, complex, and stunningly plated, making this a treat for more than just your taste buds.
Oh, and then there’s brunch… which is almost indescribable. The pastries are something that is best appreciated in person… after devouring five of them and struggling to decide on a sixth.

Top it all off with a decadent dessert and service that makes you feel like a celebrity making this a magical experience that won’t soon be forgotten.
Like many establishments of the era, Prohibition closed down the bar in the 1920s, but that didn’t stop the basement speakeasy from blooming into a spot celebrated by flappers and mobsters alike. In fact, even F. Scott Fitzgerald called the Commodore a favorite haunt! There’s just something special about this place that sends a shiver of excitement up your spine and makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

FIKA is a super cool restaurant in Minneapolis, and it’s way more than a simple cafe. This Nordic-style restaurant is actually located inside the American Swedish Institute, and part of the unique experience is having the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the ancestral roots that run so deeply in our state. "FIKA" - taken from the name of the traditional Swedish daily break - gives a nod to both the rich past and modern presentation on a menu that features seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients.
The meals here are truly something special. They are prepared with great care to honor the culinary traditions and are spectacularly presented, making this a treat for both your eyes and your tastebuds. It’s hard to believe that the work of art on your plate is so reasonably priced!
If you are already familiar with Swedish cuisine, you definitely won’t be disappointed. If you are new to these dishes, don’t be scared of the admittedly difficult-to-pronounce names; be open-minded, try something different, and you just might find a new favorite meal! Save room for dessert - it’s heavenly!

In the warmer months, the outdoor beer garden is a fantastic spot to enjoy one of the unique sausages with buddies and Butcher & The Boar’s other specialty: bourbon. While there are also plenty of beers and wines to choose from, even non-bourbon-lovers might just find a new favorite among the top-notch barrel selections served here.
5. Al’s Breakfast
Al’s Breakfast proves that you don’t need to be fancy to serve great food. This iconic spot in Dinkytown near the University of Minnesota is definitely one-of-a-kind; it was built into a former alleyway and is the narrowest restaurant in Minneapolis! With only 14 seats, Al’s is crazy-busy at peak hours, so be prepared to wait… we promise it’s worth it. Come with a good attitude and you definitely won’t be disappointed.
Between the epic omelets, flapjacks, and magical bacon, it’s impossible to pick a favorite here. The menu is straightforward and packed with all of the best breakfast staples, which are prepared to glorious perfection. The best part? Al’s definitely won’t break the bank. The prices are unreal for the size and quality of your meal, which definitely takes the edge off of waiting for a seat with a growling stomach. The whole experience is something every Minneapolitan must do before they die.
6. George & The Dragon
It’s hard to find a dish that is anything less than fantastic at George & The Dragon! Although dressed up as a comfy old-school British pub, this fun restaurant in Minneapolis serves way more than your average pub fare and their menu is quite diverse; alongside their excellent burgers and killer fried green beans (not to mention a to-die-for cheesy bacon onion dip), you will also find a super delicious Bahn Mi sandwich, awesome salads named after British Queens, and the famous Asian Hangover… it’s five-spice pork over Jasmine rice with garlic green beans and a fried egg. Your tastebuds will explode with just one bite.
They also have an impressive beer list with some unique brews and special nitros, but one of the standout drinks is actually their homemade ginger ale! To top it all off, their prices are reasonable, especially for the quality of food you receive. Call ahead if you can, it can get quite busy at peak hours!
7. The Bad Waitress
Know before you go: it’s not bad service. That’s how it’s supposed to be. Just look at the name! Your server isn’t ignoring you. Yes, you take your own order. Expect to wait. It’s definitely a unique spot, but that’s part of the charm. Now that this has been made abundantly clear, let’s get to the food. It’s delicious.
It’s hard to beat breakfast served all day, and nobody does breakfast better than a good old-fashioned diner. The various Scramblers are awesome, and both the pancakes and Cinnamon Apple French Toast are super tasty. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options and the restaurant uses organic and locally-sourced ingredients to craft its dishes. Definitely don’t miss the "cawfee"… it’s simply divine (and bottomless!)
Don’t go into The Bad Waitress with a bad attitude. Expect an experience that’s weird and wonderful all at once. This probably isn’t the place to take your sweet grandmother if she isn’t in on the theme, but the tongue-in-cheek style here makes it definitely worth a taste.
8. Psycho Suzy’s Motor Lounge
A trip to Psycho Suzy’s Motor Lounge is hard to describe. It could be the middle of the darkest depths of winter, but this vibrant tropically-themed spot could convince you that you have taken a lovely little vacation to an island paradise. In the midst of summer, a seat on the patio will make you swear you’ve died and gone to heaven. Don’t even try to work out what that means until you’ve experienced this deliciously unusual restaurant.
The Tiki bar drinks are certainly a highlight, but the food at Psycho Suzy’s shouldn’t be overlooked, especially the pizzas. They have some truly unique combinations, including the Thailand Island (roasted chicken, pineapple, Thai chili, green pepper, and pickled carrots with spicy peanut sauce) and the Riviera (sausage, herbed goat cheese, and balsamic onion with Pinot Grigio garlic sauce). The burgers and sandwiches here are pretty darn delicious too, and you will definitely have a hard time picking just one appetizer (hint: order them all… you know you want to).
We think Suzy says it best when trying to explain what the heck is going on here: "Psycho Suzy’s has been lighting up Nordeast Minneapolis with a passive-aggressive mixture of bad taste and good Minnesota hospitality." No amount of hilariously kitschy decor could overwhelm the power of a good meal.
9. Betty Dangers Country Club
Don’t be put off by that name; this is not your typical country club. In fact, it’s pretty much the opposite of a country club. I mean… there’s a Ferris Wheel. A glorious, giant Ferris Wheel with an amazing view of downtown Minneapolis. Sure, there’s also an 8.5-hole (mini) golf course…but with holes named "800 lb. Gorilla in the Country Club" and "Free Bear Hugs Ahead!" even the most adamant non-golfers can’t help but crack a smile. Everything about this place is a fantasy, and we love it.
Betty Dangers Country Club has a small menu of Tex-Mex dishes; head for the Taco Bar. The standout stars here really are the drinks… and the unabashed irony served on the side. Come for the margaritas and the eclectic experience, and order the food for hangover prevention. It’s not fine dining but from the top of the Ferris Wheel, who cares?
10. Galactic Pizza
Stepping into Galactic Pizza is like diving into a comic book! The superhero theme here is absolutely one-of-a-kind, and the playful atmosphere definitely makes for a unique experience! Alongside your favorite pizza combinations, your find some fun new toppings to try, and every pie is available in vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free preparations.
Everything about Galactic Pizza is endearing, from the delicious pizza to the extra friendly staff to the fantasy world created inside. Even if you decide on delivery over a trip to this vibrant pizza joint, you’ll still get a full serving of fun - the delivery drivers don superhero costumes!
The theme here runs deeper than just the presentation; Galactic Pizza was created with a specific vision for a positive future, including the use of organic, sustainably-grown, local ingredients, recyclable and biodegradable packaging, and donating 5% of profits to charity. It’s hard not to love a fantastically tasty spot with a mission to make the world a better place!

11. Travail Kitchen & Amusements
This list wouldn’t be complete without including Travail Kitchen & Amusements. This restaurant is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. It’s out-of-this-world, unbelievably delicious, and they aren’t exaggerating about the "amusements" part… this meal is as much a show as it is a fine dining experience.
There are no menus here. You don’t make reservations, instead you buy tickets. They aren’t cheap (they range from $75 to $120, depending on day and time) and seating is limited because this culinary performance is meant to be enjoyed on a personal level. Meals are prepared right in front of you, including 14-20 chef’s choice tasting courses, and integrate all kinds of molecular gastronomy tricks that truly looks like magic.
