We are here to help you discover some truly weird things only available here in our beloved city. From bowling ball art to Ferris wheel dining to magical elves, the Twin Cities have you covered! Check out our list of weirdest places you can go in Minneapolis.
1. House of Balls
The House of Balls is a strange, unique, and intriguing art gallery located in Minneapolis. The owner and artist has transformed wasted and unorthodox materials into one-of-a-kind works of art. His preferred medium is bowling balls! Because his studio is open to the public, passersby can stop in and see art in progress. You can see all of the amazing art pieces at House of Balls, open daily from noon to 4:00. Address: 1504 7th Street South, Minneapolis.
2. Elf Tree
Next time you’re out for a walk around Lake Harriet, be sure to stop by the Elf Tree! The Lake Harriet Elf (aka Mr. Little Guy) lives at the base of a giant ash tree on the south shore of the lake. Though Mr. Little Guy has never been seen by the public, he allows people to post notes and letters by opening the 6-inch tall door to his house and placing them inside the tree. Local legend says that notes left in the tree for the elf are always answered with a message. The elf winters somewhere out east, but returns each spring. Address: 1300 East 42nd Street, Minneapolis.
3. Betty Danger's Country Club
What makes Betty Danger’s so weird? Perhaps it's because Betty Danger’s is a country club located right smack dab in the middle of the city. If that isn’t enough to make it weird, how about the fact that you can enjoy your meal while riding The Danger? The Danger is a vertically revolving patio that features open air dining as you rotate, with stops at various viewing points. Other points to mention are Betty’s mini-golf course, featuring an 800 pound gorilla! Betty Danger’s Country Club will not disappoint. Address: 2501 Marshall Street Northeast, Minneapolis.
4. Xcentric Goods
Xcentric Goods offers antique and vintage finds, jewelry, fine art, and other collectables. Their store is located in a truly unusual historic building. White Castle Building Number 8 was one of the few prefabricated portable buildings built by the restaurant chain. This 28’ by 28’ building has had three different locations before finding its permanent location. While you can’t find burgers here, you might be able to find other treasures! Address: 3252 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis.
5. Can Can Wonderland
Can Can Wonderland is a mini golf enthusiast's dream. This is not your typical course; putt putt fans all over the world designed all the holes found here! They took the 18 best designs and, with the help of architects, fabricators, and electrical engineers, created the masterpiece that is Can Can Wonderland. This indoor golf course is a great place to meet your friends and have a few drinks. Address: 755 Prior Avenue North, St. Paul.
6. Hot Sam's Antiques
While not technically in Minneapolis, Hot Sam’s Antiques is definitely worth the short drive to Lakeville. Walk around the complex and behold the eclectic collections ranging from life-sized sharks to gigantic motorcycles. There is a ton to be seen here, and you will definitely want your camera! The admission is free, but there is a small charge to take photos... and trust me, and you are going to want to take pictures. Address: 22820 Pillsbury Avenue, Lakeville.
7. Ax-Man Surplus
You can find everything imaginable at Ax-Man - and even some stuff you'd never think of. This weird and wacky store sells surplus items from all over. Whether you're looking for gummy rats, electrical components, or craft supplies, you'll find it here. Address: 1639 University Avenue West, St. Paul.
