We, Pittsburghers, are pretty spoiled when it comes to natural attractions. After all, we’re within easy driving distance of plenty of them — from Meadow Run Natural Water Slide and Cucumber Falls at Ohiopyle State Park to Buttermilk Falls in Beaver Falls. Today, let’s journey to another spectacular waterfall near Pittsburgh that promises jaw-dropping views from every angle. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Pennsylvania.
Buckle up and set the GPS for Springfield Falls in Mercer, a delightful hour-long drive from downtown Pittsburgh that will take you through the tiny town of Volant.
If you have time, plan a stop in Volant. It's home to adorable old-fashioned shops.
Be sure to slip on comfy shoes, especially if you want to view the 20-foot high and 40-foot wide Springfield Falls, a rare waterfall in that it's wider than it is high.
If you're a fan of waterfalls, you'll quickly discover this is one of the most interesting places in Pennsylvania.
However, if you're a hiker in search of adventure, follow the short yet steep pathway through the woods that leads down to the bottom of Springfield Falls. Be careful, as the trail can be quite slippery after a rainfall.
Make sure you're wearing sturdy shoes, and take your time. While the waterfall might be at its strongest after a rainfall, the path will likely be muddy and slippery. Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty.
Once you arrive at the bottom of the falls, you'll be treated to picture-perfect views. Dip your feet into the cool creek or sit back, relax, and enjoy the view.
This is one of those Pennsylvania natural wonders that you really have to visit in all four seasons. (Just be really careful if you attempt to climb down the hill in the winter as it can get quite icy and treacherous. Even a glimpse from above during the winter, though, is spellbinding.)

Walk just a few feet, where you'll discover natural springs. Visitors and locals often fill water bottles from the natural spring.
Be sure to bring a bottle or two to fill with spring water.
