It seems like in Portland the same attractions are recommended over and over again. Everyone knows about Powell’s, Voodoo Donuts, and Forest Park, so let’s spread the love around a bit and head to these 12 attractions that are great for a visit.
1. Warrior Rock Lighthouse
Located on Sauvie Island, this tiny lighthouse is a hike away, but so worth it. You won't see many people on your trek, and the river and mountain views are stunning.
2. Oaks Park Roller Skating
In the summer, Oaks Park can be quite crazy, but the rest of the year, it is perfectly mellow. Head to the roller rink and enjoy this pastime with friends or family for a great day out.
3. Leach Botanical Garden
In SE Portland, this lovely botanical garden should be high on your list of places to visit. Cool trails, beautifully manicured grounds and friendly staff make visiting this oasis a joy.
4. The Grotto
Sitting just off 82nd Avenue in NE Portland, The Grotto is a Catholic shrine that everyone can enjoy. Beautiful grounds and quiet spaces to reflect are plentiful here.
5. Smith Teamaker
Portland's tea culture is often overlooked and Smith Teamaker is one of the finest. Whether you stop by the NW or SE location, this is one tea shop experience you will not forget.
6. Portland Aerial Tram
Sure, the tram is a form of transportation for many people that work at OHSU, but it also features some of the most amazing views in the city and everyone should go at least once.
7. Fifty Licks Ice Cream
Salt and Straw gets all the press (and has all the long lines), while Fifty Licks delivers ice cream with all the flavor and complexity without nearly the wait.
8. Hoyt Arboretum
Forest Park often overshadows our city's lovely arboretum, but if you have never taken a hike through this amazing Washington Park gem, now is the time to change that.
9. Blue Star Donuts
While often overshadowed by donut king of Portland Voodoo Donuts, Blue Star has quietly surpassed them in flavor and serves up some of the best donuts in town.
10. Broadway Books
There is more to Portland book shopping than Powell's and Broadway Books is testament to that. If you have never stopped in to this fun NE bookstore, there is no time like the present.
11. Keller Fountain
Portland has so many notable fountains that it is hard to keep them all straight. Keller has been around since the 1970s, but is often overlooked for more popular spots like Jamison and Salmon Street Springs, but this fountain is impressively cool and worth a visit.
12. Cameo Cafe
There are so many places to eat breakfast downtown and in close-in Portland that some of the best go overlooked. One such spot is the NE Sandy breakfast spot Cameo Cafe that serves up a kimchi omelet, as well as all the classic breakfast favorites that will make you wonder why you ever went anywhere else.
