With views and icy-blue water that you can actually swim in, Gem Lake is a wonderful Washington oasis in the summer; during the winter, when the landscape is snow-dusted and dazzling white, it's a sublime scene that's more perfect than pictures can capture. You'll want to have this most lovely of alpine lakes on your travel list!

Wallowa Lake - Oregon

The Wallowas are one of Oregon's most striking natural wonders. Home to majestic mountains, pristine alpine lakes, and verdant forests, there's nowhere in the PNW quite like this range. There are numerous hiking trails in the Wallowas, each offering thrilling views of the majestic mountains. And while we're all for lacing up our shoes and hitting the trails, nothing quite compares to the views you'll get on the Wallowa Lake Tramway. This lift opens for the season in mid-May, and it's a perennial favorite worth enjoying year after year. This unique tram was the steepest four-person gondola in all of North America when it was built in 1970; and decades later, it remains a superlative Beaver State attraction. Ogle the views from the top at the aptly named Summit Grill, which sits at the 8,150-foot level of Mt. Howard. And if you can't bring yourself to leave, stay and enjoy amazing, year-round camping at Wallowa Lake State Park.

Sawtooth Lake - Idaho

The Sawtooths of Idaho are celebrated for their scenic splendor, and the alpine lakes within this resplendent range are some of the most beautiful in the country. Crystal-clear, picture-perfect, and just waiting for a fly rod, Sawtooth Lake is magical in all the right ways. Nestled within a beautiful glaciated bowl, hikers cresting the Sawtooth Lake basin are treated to jaw-dropping vistas of Mount Regan; the majestic (and most-photographed) mountain in the range that towers over the eponymous lake with grand omnipotence. The largest alpine lake in the range, Sawtooth is pure grandeur, making the 10-mile trek wholly worth each and every step.

Hidden Lake - Montana

Within the wondrous wilds of Glacier National Park, Hidden Lake is a pristine alpine lake that's worth seeking out. With clear glassy waters that reveal glorious depths and reflect the surrounding alpine scenery, Hidden Lake is a true Treasure State gem. Accessing this slice of paradise is relatively easy, requiring an enjoyable three-mile trek through a marvelous mountain landscape. One of the best features about this trail is that the entire length is open and exposed, which means you'll enjoy the rolling alpine hills and valleys in a way that rivals Maria's iconic "Sound of Music" moment.

Big Bear Lake - California

Located in the heart of Southern California, Big Bear Lake sits high in the San Bernardino Mountains, creating an all-season haven of relaxation, adventure, and outdoor fun. With 22 magnificent miles of perfect alpine lake shoreline, there are endless opportunities for visitors to enjoy myriad adventures here, from exciting, adrenaline-pumping water sports to more quiet and peaceful retreats. With the well-appointed Big Bear Marina, visitors have access to all sorts of adventures and experiences, making this alpine lake one of the best all-around destinations in the country.

Lake Tahoe - California and Nevada

Lake Tahoe is an American icon. Easily the prettiest and most popular alpine lake in the country, Lake Tahoe sits on the state line between California and Nevada, surrounded by the majestic, snowcapped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Located at 6,225 feet above sea level, Lake Tahoe is the highest alpine lake in the country, and the second deepest. But superlatives aside, it's absolutely ravishing. The cold, crystal-clear waters of this lake are mesmerizing, and really provoke a sense of awe and wonder. Lake Tahoe is often lauded as one of the most beautiful places in the country, and it really does deserve each and every word of praise.

Mirror Lake - Colorado

At a staggering 11,020 feet in elevation, Mirror Lake is one of the most iconic and sought-after alpine lakes in Colorado. But accessing this place of sublime beauty is not for the faint of heart, with the hike clocking in at eight strenuous miles with a 2,300-foot elevation gain. One look at Mirror Lake, however, will put any doubts to rest. Perched at 11,000 feet above sea level at the end of a glacier-carved gorge, Mirror Lake is surrounded by verdant forests and granite, often snow-covered peaks. It's the ultimate nature postcard and the very best reward for your efforts.

Lake Blanche - Utah

One of the most accessible alpine lakes in the U.S., Lake Blanche is nestled in Utah’s Wasatch Mountain Range at nearly 9,000 feet above sea level. Though the trail is nearly seven miles long, it's quite accessible for most hikers; a large portion of the loop is ADA-accessible, in fact. Winding past waterfalls and canyons, there's no shortage of scenery on the way to this lovely oasis. Lake Blanche is, in a word, stunning. You can see Sundial Peak towering over the lake, and the fresh air is scented with pine. During the height of fall foliage, this area takes on a golden grandeur that's not to be missed.

Spruce Knob Lake - West Virginia

Wild and wonderful, West Virginia certainly lives up to its "Mountain State" moniker. Nestled in Monongahela National Forest, Spruce Knob Lake is a slice of alpine paradise that rivals anything you'd find in the mountains of Europe. At 4,863 feet above sea level, Spruce Knob is West Virginia's highest peak, and the views in this mountainous region are magnificent. The best way to take it all in is at the Alpine Lake Resort, a beautiful destination located right along the border of West Virginia and Maryland. Guests at this resort are encouraged to hit the lake for some kayaking or canoeing, taking in the beautiful scenery and breathing the fresh mountain air. If you're looking for a mountain escape in the mid-Atlantic, this is it.

Lake of the Clouds - New Hampshire

Lake of the Clouds is located in Mount Washington State Park and, while challenging to reach, it's one of the most beautiful natural attractions in New Hampshire. True to its name, this alpine lake is located over 5,000 feet above sea level, which we definitely think earns it heavenly "cloud" status. This lovely oasis is actually a series of lakes and ponds sitting between Mount Washington and Mount Monroe, and the site of the most popular Appalachian Mountain Club hut used for hikers who want to spend the night. If you prefer a day trip adventure at this alpine lake instead, the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail is a three-mile trek that's one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, in the Northeast.

Lake Champlain - Vermont

Once considered the sixth Great Lake, Lake Champlain is of otherworldly beauty. Located on the border of New York and Vermont, Lake Champlain stretches 125 miles and has a maximum depth of 400 feet, and is a pristine pool of calm, cerulean waters. Like most destinations in the Northeast, Lake Champlain has quite a history. The lake itself and the land surrounding it played an integral role in three American wars: the French & Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812; and visitors can learn more about these events at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vermont. History aside, Lake Champlain is a popular summertime destination. Its azure waters and soft, sandy shoreline are irresistible draws. In the winter, you can go ice skating on Lake Champlain, which really is a quintessential Northeast experience.

]]> The shores of Lake Superior are something to behold, with breathtaking scenery that changes along every mile. You can explore pristine lakeside beaches, naturally sculpted sandstone cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. It is a land of inland lakes, deep forests, and a shoreline that lets you explore a variety of ecosystems. One of the greatest natural wonders in the US, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan is the perfect destination for camping, hiking, or going for a weekend sightseeing excursion. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, making it a somewhat remote destination, but one that is absolutely worth the extra effort it takes to get here.

The area is managed by the National Park Service and became the first of the nation’s four National Lakeshores in 1996. Pictured Rocks gets its name from the uniquely colorful sandstone cliffs - some of which tower over 200 feet - along 15 miles of Lake Superior's coastline.

The park, as a whole, stretches for 42 miles along the shore, but the cliffs are definitely the star of the show here.

The unique colors come from various minerals that have stained the sandstone in a rainbow of colors, making for a sight unlike any other.

In addition to these painted cliffs, the shoreline also features incredible arches, caves, and fascinating formations that are popular to explore by boat or kayak during the summertime and on foot during the snowy months.

Due to the potentially rough conditions on Lake Superior, guided kayak tours are highly suggested and there are several authorized outfitters that will lead you to the most spectacular spots on the coastline.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is open year-round and is stunning in every season. The cliffs and caves often freeze over entirely during the winter, and when the conditions are safe, you can hike right down and enter the ice caves for a truly surreal experience.

The winter caves are formed by frozen waterfalls along the porous sandstone, creating a beautiful curtain of ice. For the more adventurous, you can even try your hand at ice climbing, though this is definitely a more advanced activity.

In addition to these wondrous caves, ample snowfall creates the perfect conditions for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling along the beautiful trails throughout Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Though winter is certainly an exciting season here, the summertime fun is equally as enticing.

There are nearly 100 miles of trails throughout the park, as well as three drive-in campgrounds and 14 backcountry campsites. Pictured Rocks is also a surprisingly popular scuba diving destination, as the rough waters of Lake Superior have caused more than a few shipwrecks over the decades. The Alger Underwater Preserve, in particular, draws divers into the protected offshore areas that hide beneath the surface.

Above lake level, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is home to several of Michigan’s most beautiful waterfalls.

You'll wander through forests, ferns, and wildflowers before reaching the 50-foot-tall cascade over a cliff.

Miners Falls and Sable Falls are other popular options, tumbling 50 feet and 75 feet, respectively.

There is a short and sweet self-guided interpretive trail that ends at the Miners Falls, but do note that there are 77 steps leading down to the observation platform, so prepare for a bit of a climb on your way back up.

There are trails of all lengths and difficulty levels throughout Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, ranging from paved walkways that are only a few hundred feet long to segments of the North Country Scenic Trail that stretches 42 miles through the length of the park.

Another fascinating feature found in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is the Grand Sable Dunes.

The dunes cover more than five square miles and the tallest tower more than 300 feet above the lake, making them the highest formation in the park. While an impressive sight in their own right, the Grand Sable Dunes are also a unique ecosystem that is home to rare and endangered plant species.

For those who prefer to sit back, relax, and take in the scenery, the beautiful beach at Sand Point is the perfect spot.

There are countless ways to explore Pictured Rocks on your own, but the National Park Service also offers fascinating guided tours where you can learn more about specific areas.

One popular ranger-led activity is the Lighthouse Tours of the Au Sable Lighthouse, which are offered from mid-June through the end of September. This active lighthouse is 87 feet tall and was built in 1874 to guide ships along Au Sable Point, one of the most dangerous areas of Lake Superior’s "shipwreck coast."

The park has two visitor centers, one on each end of the park.

Munising Falls Visitor Center is located near the park's western end, while Grand Sale Visitor Center can be found near Grand Marais on the eastern end of the park. Several special programs and classes are offered at the visitor centers during the summer months for those who wish to learn more about the history and geology of the park.

General Information:

Accessibility: Although ice and snowy conditions can make parts of the park inaccessible during winter, Pictured Rocks administrators have worked hard to create an environment that is wheelchair accessible via several paved trails and overlooks, handicapped-accessible campsites, picnic sites, and beachside paved sidewalks. Interagency Visitor Center, Munising Falls Interpretive Center, and Miners Castle Information Station in Munising, as well as the Grand Sable Visitor Center in Grand Marais, are all wheelchair-accessible. For more accessibility information, visit the official website.

Pet Friendly: Pets are allowed in certain areas of the park, but not all of them. Watch for signs. All pets must be on a six-foot leash at all times.

Parking: You can access the west side of the park via Michigan highways M-28 and M-94. You can also access spur roads off Alger County Road H-58 that lead to parking spaces next to overlooks, trailheads, beaches, and campgrounds.

Seasonal Access: You can explore this park any time of the year, and there are activities for every season and type of outdoor adventurer. Some roads and access points may be closed during the winter. It is closed during major holidays.

Cost: The park costs no fees, but they do sell America the Beautiful Passes. Special programs and tours may have a small fee. You can learn more on the National Park Service website here.

Riders race side-by-side on tubes elevated six stories high, zipping along more than 335 feet of twists and turns at speeds of up to 32 MPH. The ride culminates in a dramatic 37-foot plunge straight into the mouth of a massive king cobra. The trail leads you to a waterfall with an accompanying swimming area that is open year-round and truly a real-life oasis. Water flows into a refreshing pool that sits surrounded by soaring ponderosa pines and meadows of purple lupine and golden sunflowers, creating a scene straight out of a fantasy. People say it's as close to Heaven as it gets, and once you visit this glorious waterfall swimming hole for yourself, you'll wholeheartedly agree.

While the Grand Canyon gets all the credit in terms of Arizona's most spectacular natural wonders, Havasu Falls is a showstopper and very popular hippie hole in Arizona. Right next to Grand Canyon National Park, the falls are located at the base of Havasu Canyon on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. 14. Antelope Canyon - Arizona

Created by the slow seeping of water into the natural cracks of sandstone; over the years, these small cracks turned into large, narrow gorges -- known as slot canyons -- that are dramatic and deep. You do not have to climb or rappel to access this area of the canyon, making this an accessible place for anyone with an adventurous soul and spirit.

15. Nine Mile Canyon - Utah

Another superlative showstopper in Utah, Nine Mile Canyon is a bit of a misnomer; this incredible canyon spans 46 magnificent miles and features art created more than a thousand years ago. Often called the world's largest art gallery, Nine Mile Canyon features tens of thousands of prehistoric petroglyphs and pictographs that adorn its rocky red walls. This winding and rocky canyon was home to Fremont and Ute people for thousands of years, and eventually became a route for European fur trappers, traders, and settlers. Today, the ancient artworks make this wholly unique canyon a top destination for history buffs, nature lovers, archaeologists, and explorers.
