]]>Life in Washington DC doesn’t come without its dangers; there are several risks associated with living in Washington DC. For starters, there are some pretty dangerous areas in DC. In fact, according to NeigbhorhoodScout.com, Washington DC has one of the highest crime rates in America with a crime rate of 60 per 1,000 residents. The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is one in 17. But given that Washington DC is one of the most expensive cities to live in and is home to many of the top politicians and elite, it’s clear that there are safe places and bad neighborhoods in DC. And the question remains, “Where are the most dangerous neighborhoods in DC?” Well, we dove into some data to find the worst neighborhoods in Washington DC.
Washington Highlands/Bellevue ranks as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in DC. The Atlantic St SE/4th St SE area was ranked as number 22 on the "Top 25 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods" list by NeighborhoodScout.com.
The NoMA area, also known as North of Massachusetts, in the northeast part of DC, is notoriously known as one of the more dangerous areas in DC. Chart-It states that there are 187 average violent crime incidents every year in the area. Despite its ranking, NoMa is still worth a visit, and that’s because it hosts an annual Oktoberfest, which is touted as one of the best festivals in Washington DC.
Over the course of one year, the Washington Post reported that the Columbia Heights, Mount Pleasant, and Park View neighborhood cluster had the most violent crimes, with 406 cases, and the highest number of robberies, with 268. Just because the area is among the most dangerous parts of DC, don’t discount it altogether. It is home to one of the most enchanting parks in Washington DC. Plus, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant are some of the most historic neighborhoods in Washington DC.
Deanwood Metro Station regularly ranks on the list of most dangerous metro stations in the area. By July 2016, there had already been three people killed at the station.
Also on the northeast side of DC, Brentwood is known for its gritty violence. Shootings in broad daylight are not out of the norm here. According to AreaVibes.com, the overall crime rate in Brentwood is 179% higher than the national average.
The neighborhood cluster 23, which includes Ivy City, Trinidad, Carver, and Langston is also in Southeast DC and while gentrification is occurring in some parts of the cluster, violence is still high. There are 23 violent crimes per 1,000 residents according to Neighborhood Info, which is well above the city’s average of 10.
Washington DC politicians have been trying to clean up historic Anacostia for years and they are making great strides, but crime is still heavy in the area. Anacostia is a poor area and according to AreaVibes, the overall crime rate there is 223% higher than the national average. It does boast one huge perk, though. It’s home to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, one of the most scenic hikes in Washington DC.

Seven Oaks Lavender Farm is a family-owned farm located in Catlett, Virginia, an hour outside of Washington DC.
During lavender season in the summer, which typically takes place early June through mid-July, but is weather dependent, you can visit the farm to enjoy gorgeous purple perfumed flowers and enjoy a peaceful summer day.

Luckily, since Washington, DC is so close to both Maryland and Virginia, we’re not far from plenty of beautiful lakes. These bodies of water are perfect for swimming, boating, fishing, and just general lounging. If you’re looking for picture-perfect views and all-around fun, you’ll want to check out the best lakes near Washington DC. We’ve gathered up a few of our favorites that you should visit this summer.
1. Lake Anna at Lake Anna State Park: Courthouse, VA
Lake Anna is one of the largest inland lakes in Virginia. It's only about 70 miles south of Washington, DC. This is a popular spot for fishing, camping, and swimming. At 13,000 acres, this is a big lake! It's inside the Virginia state park that shares its name and is one of the best lakes near DC.
Every lake in Maryland is man-made, which is a pretty incredible fact. The most impressive of all is Deep Creek Lake, the largest inland body of water in the Old Line State. There are nearly 70 miles of shoreline here, so you'll find plenty of space for fishing, sunbathing, and swimming.
Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland is pretty spectacular. It's tucked away in the Catoctin Mountains and has a waterfall that shares its name, plus a gorgeous beach at Hunting Creek Lake. This is the perfect place to create your own outdoor adventure. You can swim and even rent a paddleboat or canoe here if you don't feel like relaxing in the sand for the day! It's one of the most spectacular lakes near Washington DC.
4. Greenbrier Lake in Greenbrier State Park: Maryland
Another great state park in Maryland is Greenbrier State Park. It's hidden in the Appalachian Mountains and where you'll find Greenbrier Lake. This is some of the clearest water in the state and you'll find lots of opportunities for fun. Hiking trails, boating, and fishing are all popular. If you don't feel like leaving, there's a campground where you can stay the night!
Lake Arrowhead is a 34-acre lake in the scenic Shenandoah Valley. The lake boasts a sandy beach and is a popular spot for fishing and tubing. There are also plenty of nearby hiking trails. It's one of our favorite lakes in Virginia and is definitely worth a visit.
Smith Mountain is actually a few hours away from Washington, DC. It's closer to Roanoke, down in Southern Virginia. Still, it's definitely worth the drive! It's no wonder this is one of the area's most popular lake destinations. It's nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and has tons of water sports, plus gorgeous views. It's such a beautiful lake!

Sweet summertime in the chocolate capital of the country is just two and half hours out of DC! They feature a massive waterpark and have tons of play areas and waterslides for water fans of all ages! One of our favorite water parks near Washington DC.
Pirate's Cove is its own treasure! Kid-friendly waterslides, a large pool, a pirate-themed play area and lots of sandboxes for digging. Pirate’s Cove Waterpark has something for everyone! This is a great Washington DC water park.
Ocean Dunes offers a 230-foot slide and a 170-foot slide for exciting rides. If you really need to get cool, the 500-gallon dumping bucket and multiple waterfalls around the park will do the job. We’re so glad this made our list of Washington DC water parks.

Drive a few hours south to Williamsburg Virginia and have a wild day at Water Country USA. Thrill seekers will love the Colossal Curl, little ones can splash through fountains and child-sized sprays and then the whole family can relax down the lazy river. In Upper Marlboro, Maryland, you will have a wild adventure at Hurricane Harbor at 6 Flags. There are speed slides, lazy rivers, rafting rides, and a giant wave pool. This Washington DC water park is well worth the drive!
