Other information to be mindful of? During the 1940s, the park was used by the U.S. Army to as a practice artillery and mortar range area. Hikers inside Dolly Sods are advised to not wander off while hiking, especially along areas like the Fisher Spring Run Trail because while a crew removed 15 mortar shells (some of which were still live), there’s still a risk of running into more uncovered live shells.
